Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Whitfield? Don't Start It

If you have not started the motor as yet, don't. A drain and nothing else is almost always what a car requires while the petrol is still sitting in your tank and the engine has not run, which is why it is the next few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has stopped in Whitfield or the rest of Derbyshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there. Ring us and then our engineers will explain what comes next before you attempt anything else.

What to do first about petrol in a diesel

  • Never fire it up — and never depend on it when it starts. That is the bit most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor fed diesel normally just cannot run, and so the person stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, ticks over and drives away without complaint for a couple of miles. It is not fine. It is wearing out that fuel system while you drive.
  • Switching the car's ignition on commonly primes your system, and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition alone.
  • Never tip diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage in the way that guidance presumes, and topping up clears nothing — it simply gives you a fuller tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A car that has not shifted is the simplest one to sort, so remain where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Ebenezer Street? Hazards on, and leave the vehicle there. An awkward location works for us better than a started engine.
  • The van arriving instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning SK13 8, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Keep both ready before you phone.
  • Three facts determine the full call-out: the liquid you put in, the ballpark volume of it, and whether it has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

At the forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

It begins at a pump, mostly. Often enough the job finishes there as well. If you're still on the forecourt at Esso, that's generally where this drain takes place — we work on garage forecourts all the time, with the site's permission.

Before the motor has fired — the forecourt is the one spot it is halted. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and we can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean the lines and the filter need rinsing as well as the tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for the key.

Move the car out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they normally will. The next motorist gets past the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Starting it for four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.

Whitfield and the areas beside it

Whitfield Park, Glossop, Charlestown, Hobroyd, Lower Dinting — each of them on our journeys that take us across to Whitfield as well, a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on that list it doesn't mean we never come — there are separate pages for nearly all locations in Derbyshire, and the ones listed above are simply the closest neighbours. Phone to ask instead of guessing — borders especially, and wherever your phone can get wrong.

The patch the page covers appears on the map. The vehicle doesn't need to travel to us. We work across all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

A passer-by will advise you to move it out of the gateway and fix it later. Do not. A wrongly fuelled diesel Nissan Qashqai on the zig-zags at St Mary's Catholic Voluntary Academy is a nuisance; the same vehicle started three more times to be courteous is a fuel system rather than a tank. Each restart primes your lines and pulls more petrol past your filter then into your pump. Leave it, let everyone complain, then phone us.

Don't chance it. The journey home from Surrey Arms is entirely possible, which is precisely the problem — a weakened tank doesn't stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just grinds the parts your fuel is supposed to lubricate. Phone, then let the Audi A4 stay where it is.

Leave the Mercedes E-Class by The Vineyard then call us. We are firm about not driving on because a worn-out pump loses, and what it loses passes downstream with your fuel to the injectors further along.

Most of these occur somewhere new, and the cause is mechanical not careless — almost no resistance meets a smaller petrol nozzle entering a newer diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel BMW 5 Series, a fill-up by St James that you did not think about? Phone us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone clocks it, and the further they go, the more petrol arrives at the fuel injectors.

That sluggishness is the fuel failing to build pressure correctly, not the motor packing up — and with no dashboard light for it, cars in that position typically get driven once more before anyone rings. Please don't. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone limp, idle turned ragged, and a diesel Vauxhall Astra now sitting by Glossop Indoor Market. Turn the car off and phone us.

Whitfield: stranded wherever you parked

Not everybody has a chance to pull in anywhere suitable. A normal call for us instead of an odd one: realised after setting off, landed by the verge on Gladstone Street or in a lay-by with your hazards on.

Out of the vehicle if it's not sensible to sit inside, beside it if it is. Don't restart the motor to limp it somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mixture further into your fuel system. A technician heading to an inconvenient spot is no trouble for us, and it's far better for the car than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, and your car has moved

under 5 miles out of Whitfield, your M67 is what counts here. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's some smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Assume the worst of that on a long run. Anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you call. What our technicians bring alters.

A bit about Whitfield

Whitfield is a suburban area in Derbyshire, situated on the riverside with nearby Whitfield Park providing green space for residents. Whitfield sits at an elevation of 182 metres, approximately 12.5 miles from Manchester, and is characterized by predominantly terraced housing. Whitfield is located near other local places, including Glossop and Charlestown, and is around 153.9 miles from London.

What our engineers do when we reach you around Whitfield

  • The replies alter the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of that, and if the motor has run.
  • Your tank is emptied completely.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever remains after that isn't the thing that created the problem.
  • The fuel system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • We turn it on and confirm it runs correctly on new diesel.

That leaves it ready to drive away. There's no need for a workshop at any stage, because the work is all done where the car is, and when it is spotted early, long-term damage is very unusual.

Whitfield AdBlue removal is a separate matter

Do not crank it: that opening step holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Whitfield page. Both are ours to handle.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Whitfield?

We cannot put one number on this page honestly, because the job is not one job. What shifts it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much your tank takes.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a technician.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and if your motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. If it isn't urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Whitfield motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Whitfield petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a fair share of this work happens. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear whether working there is possible.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. What determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through your fuel system — because though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving shifts the trouble along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you is not restarting it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It's not a change, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has diluted is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different fault. So no. After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Standing next to it?

Leave the engine turned off.

Switch it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and still, a car is in the best position available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
