Petrol in Diesel

Whitfield: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, all over Whitfield and the remainder of Gloucestershire. The first thing to do is not to start your engine. While the engine has not been started and the petrol is still in that tank, a tank drain is almost always all it needs, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. Phone and we shall explain what comes next before you do anything else.

Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for several miles. People have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So never start the vehicle. And having started, never believe it: your fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
  • Leave your ignition alone also. Diesel does two roles: it ignites, and before it combusts it protects the high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is often all it takes to prime the system, which moves the petrol out of the tank then into precisely those parts.
  • Topping up takes out nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that advice presumes — so do not pour diesel on top to dilute it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay still if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on A38, anywhere — an odd place for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to deal with than a vehicle that never moved.
  • Before you dial, get your position. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning GL12 8 — that's what decides whether our van arrives or circles.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Let us know what went in, about how much, and whether the engine has run. These three facts settle the whole job.

At a forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

Much of the job begins at a forecourt, meaning a large share of it is done there. We work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's consent, so if you are still at Thornbury Motors that is usually where this drain gets done.

No place except the forecourt can this be spotted with the motor still unrun. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a catastrophe, and we can still sort it out where it is. It does mean your lines and the filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the key.

Move the car out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they generally will. The next driver gets by the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

Places our team serve in Whitfield

These same journeys take us to Buckover, Milbury Heath, Abbotside, Crossways and Sundayshill besides Whitfield, which is a rural hamlet.

Not on this list? That says nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and most places across Gloucestershire have a page of their own somewhere on the site. Close to the boundary, or somewhere the satnav misreads? Phone to check rather than assuming.

The area the page covers is on the map. Your car does not need to travel to us. We work over the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Your diesel BMW 3 Series will have seemed completely ordinary on the way back from St Andrew's Church of England Primary School, Cromhall. They always do, and that's the catch with petrol in a diesel instead of the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol motor and it generally will not run, so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it fires up, idles and moves off as though nothing has happened — all while the high-pressure fuel pump keeps working without the protection the fuel is meant to be giving. Nothing tells you, because from behind the wheel there is nothing to caution you about. Phone us with roughly how far you travelled and how hard you pushed it; the second one matters more than the first.

You set off at the end, once we have started the car and confirmed it runs correctly on clean diesel, with the fuel system primed. Before that, in the car park at The White Horse Inn, the contaminated fuel comes out of your tank, your lines get rinsed and the filter comes off where your Peugeot 308 has a replaceable one. Everything begins with three questions when our technicians reach the car: what got in, how much of it, and whether it has been fired up since.

Here is the whole mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the fine gaps it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which accounts for the normal Stump's Wood call — a diesel Mercedes C-Class, out there without complaint and back down on power, lumpy at idle, perhaps a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; thinned, it bleeds past those gaps instead of building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than the engine was built around. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped acting like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left close to Bloody Acre Hill Fort. For a diesel Vauxhall Astra whose engine has turned, that is about the best version there is. Phone us, and let the vehicle stand with your ignition alone. Short helps, genuinely — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and your filter has had weakened fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why your lines get purged and not just that tank emptied.

Petrol in a diesel does its damage as a ratio, which is the reason our engineers ask at all: the same few litres sitting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mixture than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger mix rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Almost no one knows how full the tank was in a car collected two days ago, and we work that out on the spot. Do call the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to approve the work, and that is far faster settled before than after. Then call us about the Citroen C3 by Fort Hill Camp.

Stranded on the kerbside around Whitfield

A chance to pull over anywhere safe doesn't fall to everyone. Set off, then noticed? Ended up on the verge beside Iron Hogg Lane, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards on? That is a common call here. Not a rare one.

Fine right there? Wait beside it. Not okay? Step out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. However inconvenient the spot, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that's a lot better for the vehicle than driving on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the car has moved

Here is where your M5 comes into it — under a mile from Whitfield. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power falls away, the idle turns uneven, and there may be smoke.

Take the next exit that's safe, pull up there, and never start the car to move it. It changes what our technicians bring, and so mention it when you phone: on a longer trip — anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

All about Whitfield

Whitfield is a small hamlet in Gloucestershire, situated inland at an elevation of 54 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Whitfield lies near the cities of Bristol and Gloucester, and is close to nearby places such as Buckover and Milbury Heath. Whitfield is located in the South West region of England, approximately 101 miles from London. Whitfield has a population of around 570 residents.

The call-out in Whitfield, step by step

  • Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that was put in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Out flows the polluted fuel.
  • Our engineers rinse your fuel lines and clear your filter, and so what is remaining in your system isn't what started the trouble.
  • The fuel system gets bled, on new diesel.
  • Our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away. Our technicians do all of it wherever your car has stopped, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed soon, it's very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Whitfield

Do not fire it up: that first rule holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this fault itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and takes away the protection the system relies on. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

We handle both, and AdBlue removal around Whitfield has its own page with the details — including why it is frequently the more significant of the two.

Whitfield costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Honestly, no single price fits on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what varies it:

  • Whether the motor has been run or driven. This is the main one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much your tank can hold.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a van.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and if the motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.

Things our technicians get about petrol in diesel around Whitfield

Fuel drains on a Whitfield petrol station forecourt

A fair share of this work gets done there, so yes. Our engineers work at Stone Garage and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run. What settles how much work is required is if that mix has been pulled through your fuel system — since even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving moves the problem along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It is not a modification, so a drain then flush carried out correctly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back. Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

There is no need to take it to a franchised dealer, because we drain and clean the car wherever it is.

Is the car still with you?

Never switch your engine back on.

Switch it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it. This is recoverable from far more regularly than people assume, and a parked, cold motor is the best place to be in.
