Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Whitwood?

With the tank still holding the fuel and the motor not yet run, almost every job requires only a drain, so keep your engine off. That result is decided in the minutes right after filling up, and not by the amount that was put in. Throughout Whitwood and the remainder of West Yorkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Ring us and then our engineers will explain what follows from here before you do any more.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine enough for a couple of miles. People have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not crank it. And if started, do not rely on it: that fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the ignition stays off also — switch it on and you frequently prime that system, and that's petrol leaving your tank for precisely those components.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to sort, and so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Whitwood Lane? Hazards on, then keep the car there. A tricky location works for us better than a started diesel.
  • Get your whereabouts prepared before you phone. A postcode that starts WF10 5 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van arriving and the van circling.
  • What went in, approximately how much, and if your car has run — those three answers decide your whole job. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Petrol in a diesel Renault Megane, sat at Castleford since breakfast? The afternoon has lost you nothing — fuel in a tank is dormant. It was the trip in that drew diluted diesel through the pump. Call us before you fetch the vehicle.

Twenty to nine by Ackton Pastures Primary Academy, already late, and the receipt in your hand says unleaded. Hazards on, engine off, ring us. Three miles in your Skoda Octavia feels like nothing, but a diesel pump delivers fuel to demand — while a rushed morning run asks for plenty.

Standing still, it gets no worse. Your pump isn't turning, so whatever happened on the way to Pasture Way in that diesel Peugeot 308 is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on the motor to find more of that.

The slimmer petrol nozzle fits a modern diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical not slapdash. New locations see most of it for that reason. So: filled up near Cutsyke Christian Church without thinking, in a diesel Ford Kuga you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anyone spots it, and mileage decides how much petrol ends up at the fuel injectors.

That sluggishness is your fuel failing to build pressure fully, not the motor failing — and with no warning for it, vehicles in that position generally get driven a second time before anybody phones. Do not. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone limp, idle turned uneven, and a diesel Citroen C3 now waiting near All Saints. Switch the car off then call us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Whitwood

On the forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

The work kicks off at a pump, generally. Frequently it finishes there as well. If you're still at the forecourt at Esso, that's normally where the drain takes place — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's consent.

A forecourt is the single spot the mistake gets halted before the engine has run. Fuel drawn out of that tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when your engine is fired up and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the filter and your lines together with your tank. That is still not a disaster, and we put it right where your car stands. What settles it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after your receipt was read.

Move the vehicle out of the way if the attendants offer, and they generally will. The next customer gets past the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Shifting the car four lengths doesn't justify firing the engine.

Places we cover in Whitwood

Being a residential suburb, Whitwood gets a regular visit, whilst the areas round about come along on the same run: Gilcar and Hopetown, Cutsyke and Whitwood Mere, Normanton Common.

Not on this list? It says nothing. The places above are simply the nearest few, and most locations across West Yorkshire have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Phone and enquire rather than guessing — county lines particularly, and anywhere the satnav tends to get wrong.

The patch this page spans appears on this map. Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of it is territory we serve, and none of it needs the car to move to us.

Whitwood: stuck wherever you parked

The opportunity to pull over anywhere sensible does not come to everybody. If you realised after setting off and finished up on the verge beside Whitwood Common Lane, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards going, that's a common call for us and not an odd one.

Safe right there? Remain beside it. Not safe? Move out and away from it. Never start it up to get to a nicer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that blend deeper into the system. A technician coming to an inconvenient place is no bother for us, and it is far better for the vehicle than carrying on.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

This is where the M62 comes into it — under a mile from Whitwood. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Never start it to reposition. Get off at the next sensible exit then turn off. It changes what our technicians bring, and so say so when you ring: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

Whitwood itself

Whitwood is a suburban area in West Yorkshire, situated near the city of Wakefield and characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock. Whitwood sits at a relatively low elevation of around 20 metres, in a gently sloping landscape that stretches out towards the nearby communities of Gilcar, Hopetown, and Cutsyke. Whitwood is located approximately 5 miles from Wakefield, making it a commuter-friendly location for those working in the city. Whitwood has a population of around 2154 residents, according to recent estimates.

What follows when we reach you in Whitwood

  • The responses change the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of it, and whether the engine has run.
  • That tank gets cleared completely.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left after that is not the thing that caused the trouble.
  • Your system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • After it is turned on, we make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

That has it ready to drive away. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been caught early, and since all of it is done where your car is, it never has to go to a workshop.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Whitwood is a separate problem

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first rule is the same — never fire it up — but the issue isn't. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the protection the fuel system relies on. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Whitwood page. Both are ours to handle.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Whitwood?

Honestly, no single price belongs on a page like this. This job differs. Here's what changes it:

  • Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the key one.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that proportion.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
  • Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us the vehicle, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range. For the car at home that's going nowhere and is not time-critical, works too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Whitwood motorists

I'm on a forecourt in Whitwood. Can you drain it here?

Plenty of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the station's consent our engineers attend CNG Fuels and the other forecourts locally routinely.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether your motor has run counts far more, though the proportion counts too, rather than the litres. What decides how much work is needed is whether that mix has been drawn through your fuel system — since although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. Now what?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what moves the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable much more commonly than drivers expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a change and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

What petrol has weakened isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate issue. So no. Later on? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the vehicle is, we drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

Is the vehicle still with you?

Never switch it back on.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it. A still, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more often than motorists expect.
