Petrol in Diesel

Wick: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not fired up the motor yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a vehicle requires while the fuel is still inside the tank and the engine has not turned over, which is why it's the following few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has come to rest in Wick or the remainder of Devon, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there. A single ring our way will be plenty: our engineers will tell you what follows next. Do this first.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

  • Whenever you drive, your pump and your injectors suffer. This is why you never start it, and why you don't believe it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit most people get wrong — is that it drives away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually cannot run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Leave the ignition alone as well. Diesel has two jobs: it combusts, and before it ignites it protects your injection pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Switching the ignition on is commonly all it takes to prime your system, which pulls this petrol out of the tank then into just those components.
  • Do not water down it. Diesel added on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that has never shifted is the simplest one to sort out, and our team would much rather come to an odd location than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Greenway Lane, switch the hazards on then keep the vehicle there.
  • Have your location ready before you ring. A postcode beginning EX14 4 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between the van arriving and a van circling.
  • What went in, about how many litres, and if the engine has fired — these three replies shape the whole visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Quarter past eight, a quick fill on the way in, and the penny drops close to eleven — by which time the diesel Volkswagen Golf has been sitting at Honiton for three hours. Ring us then leave it precisely where it stands. The drive in is the bit that counts most, since diesel does two roles on its way through an engine: it ignites, and before it burns it greases that injection pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. So those few miles were done with the pump working on a fluid that had given up much of the protection it is made for — which is why the thing we ask is how many miles you drove, not how long the car has been standing.

Hazards on. Motor off. Call us. It is twenty to nine by Honiton Primary School, you're late, and the till receipt shows unleaded — and even though three miles in the Skoda Octavia sounds like nothing, fuel gets metered to demand, and a rushed run demands plenty of it.

Risk the drive home from the pub in the village? Don't. It will start and it will pull away quite happily, which is the problem — a diesel on a weakened tank behaves generally whilst wearing down the parts the fuel should be lubricating. Park the Audi A3 then phone.

Phoning from close to Combe Raleigh Village Hall? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the car it's on. Room for a van beside you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The location itself scarcely counts: on-street is where we work most, and we'd much rather have a cramped spot than a motor somebody has driven somewhere quicker. Then it is a drain for the Citroen C3, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines cleaned, clean fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of it is in your lines and not your tank.

Switch off where you have stopped, and don't restart it to find somewhere better — near St Nicholas or anywhere at all. Knocking, a ragged idle, white smoke and a limp throttle are a misfuelled diesel Ford Fiesta telling you what is wrong.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Wick

Can petrol be drained from a diesel at the forecourt?

A big part of the work gets completed at a forecourt, as that's where it usually kicks off. The drain usually gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at Regent? Given the station's agreement, that is a spot our technicians work, and routinely.

At a forecourt, this gets stopped with the engine never run, and no place else does it. The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for the keys settle how much requires flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and your filter require flushing as well as that tank. It is not a disaster, and our technicians can still sort it out where your car stands.

Push the car out of the way if the attendants offer, and they normally will. The next customer gets past the pump, and that's worth doing. Starting the car just to shift four vehicle lengths is not.

Wick plus the villages beside it

Beacon, Monkton, Combe Raleigh, Luppitt, Northcote — each of those on the rounds that carry us across to Wick itself, a rural hamlet.

Our engineers still come. The names above are merely the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for most towns in Devon, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Ring us and enquire rather than assuming — boundaries especially, and wherever a satnav tends to misread.

The map shows the ground this page spans. Your car does not need to travel to us. We work over every bit of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Wick: stranded where you parked

Some drivers have no safe spot to pull over whatsoever. Set off, then realised? Landed on the verge of Clapper Lane, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That's a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Out of the motor when it is not safe to wait inside, beside it if it is. Do not restart it to reach a safer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that mix deeper into the fuel system. We will take the van to an awkward spot without any bother, and for the car that's much better than pressing on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

This is where the M5 comes in — under 10 miles away from Wick. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power ebbs away, your idle gets lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

Pull off at the next safe junction, switch off, and do not start the vehicle to move it. It alters what our technicians bring, so say so when you call: on a longer drive — anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

Wick itself

Wick is a small hamlet in Devon, situated inland at an elevation of 167 metres, and is located near the communities of Beacon, Monkton, and Combe Raleigh. Wick sits approximately 17 miles from Exeter, the nearest city, and is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock. Wick remains a quiet, rural community with a small population of around 544 residents. Wick is also relatively distant from London, at a distance of 140 miles.

When our technicians reach you around Wick: what we do

  • We find out what was put in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The responses change the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.
  • The contaminated fuel is pulled from that tank.
  • We purge your fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, so what's left in the system is not what created the trouble.
  • Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
  • When it's fired up, our technicians confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

Then it is ready to pull away. Long-term damage is very rare when it has been noticed quickly, and as all of it is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Wick is a separate problem

The issue isn't the same, though the opening rule is — do not start it — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the protection the system depends on. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Wick page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Wick

One number would not be honest here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much your tank holds.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.
  • Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there safely?

Tell us your car, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer instead of a range. If it's not urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: common queries around Wick

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Wick?

Yes, and it is where a big portion of this work gets done. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there's possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It rests on the ratio rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether the motor has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mixture sucked through it.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's recoverable a lot more regularly than motorists fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It's not an alteration, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a different era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind replaces. After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.

Waiting next to it?

Never turn the car back on.

If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere safe, turn it off then keep it off. This is recoverable from a lot more frequently than drivers assume, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.

Throughout Devon and in Wick: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
