Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Wick Hill?

With the tank still holding the petrol and your engine not yet started, almost every job needs only a drain, so keep your engine off. That outcome is decided in the minutes straight after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that went in. Throughout Wick Hill and the remainder of Berkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Phone and then our engineers can show you what happens next before you attempt anything else.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Never start the car. Turned on anyway? Then never trust it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle generally cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off normally, for a couple of miles. Most people get that reversed. It's not okay — the fuel system is grinding every mile you drive.
  • Diesel burns, and before it combusts it protects — the high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition be too: turning it on is frequently all it takes to prime your system, and priming moves petrol from your tank into precisely those parts.
  • Don't weaken it. Diesel tipped on top clears nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • Stay where you are if you safely can. A car that has never shifted is the simplest one to sort, and we'd rather drive to an odd place than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Goughs Lane, put your hazards on then keep the vehicle there.
  • Keep your location prepared before you ring. A postcode starting RG12 2 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van turning up and our van circling.
  • What was put in, approximately how much, plus whether the motor has started — these three facts shape the entire job. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Quarter past eight. A rushed top-up on the way in. Around eleven it dawns on you, and by then the diesel Volkswagen Passat has sat at Bracknell for three hours. Ring us and keep it where it stands. What is key is the drive in, as diesel both combusts and — before that — protects your pump and the injectors, whereas petrol only ever ignites. Those few miles worked the pump on a fluid drained of most of its protection, and no quantity of sitting in a car park adds any of that back. Hence the thing we ask about distance instead of hours sitting, and hence the instruction to leave your keys where they are until our technicians get there.

A diesel pump delivers fuel on demand, and a rushed morning drive demands plenty — so three miles in your Skoda Octavia sounds like nothing and isn't. Twenty to nine by Sandy Lane Primary School, running late, the receipt in your hand saying unleaded: hazards on, engine off, phone.

Straightforward job, this one — till somebody drives it home. A diesel Peugeot 308 parked outside The Boot with petrol in your tank loses nothing by sitting there overnight, so park it and call us once it's light. Expect a question about the drive there, though. Brief and chilly is precisely where petrol battles to burn, and what won't burn can get past the rings then into the engine oil.

Nothing is getting worse whilst it sits. Whatever your diesel BMW 5 Series did on the way to The Elms Recreation Ground, it is doing none of it now: the pump is not turning. So take your time — but never drive it home to buy yourself any.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a few hundred yards, left close to Bracknell (Central) Library. For a diesel Audi A6 whose motor has turned, that is about the best version there is. Ring us, and let it stand with your ignition alone. Short helps, really — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and your filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why the fuel lines get rinsed and not just the tank cleared.

At a forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

Plenty of this job starts at a forecourt, meaning a big chunk of that gets finished at one. If you are still at the forecourt at Tesco, that is usually where the drain happens — we work on garage forecourts all the time, with the station's agreement.

A filling station is the single spot it gets halted before the motor has fired. The few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the keys determine how much requires cleaning. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter need flushing as well as the tank. It is not a disaster, and our technicians can still deal with it where your car sits.

The staff will generally happily roll the vehicle away from the pump so the next customer can get through. That's worth doing. Cranking it just for four car lengths? No.

Wick Hill plus the areas near it

Being a residential suburb, Wick Hill has a regular call, while the villages nearby go along on that same run: Bracknell and Bullbrook, Newell Green and Whitegrove, Skimpedhill.

We do come. The names above are only the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all towns across Berkshire, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Close to the boundary, or somewhere a satnav misreads? Contact us to enquire instead of assuming.

The map shows the patch this page spans. Every bit of that is territory we cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't move your car anywhere.

Wick Hill: stuck where you pulled up

Not everybody has a chance to pull over anywhere suitable. Set off, then twigged? Ended up on the verge of Kenilworth Avenue, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That is a common call here. Not a rare one.

Whether you remain by the car or stand away from it hangs on if being in it is sensible. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the catch: fire it up to get to somewhere better and the mixture goes further into the system with every mile travelled. We will bring our van to an awkward place without any trouble, and for the vehicle that's much better than carrying on.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where the A329(M) comes in — under 3 miles away from Wick Hill. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the first exit that is sensible, pull up there, and do not start the vehicle to reposition. Presume the worst of that on a long run. Anything approaching the under 50 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you ring. What our technicians bring differs.

About Wick Hill

Wick Hill is a suburban area in Berkshire, situated on the riverside with an elevation of 87 metres. Wick Hill lies near the towns of Bracknell and Bullbrook, and is characterized by a high proportion of flat housing. Wick Hill is located approximately 27 miles from London, making it a commuter base for those working in the capital. Wick Hill is also close to the village of Newell Green, and forms part of the wider urban area around Bracknell.

What we do when our engineers reach you around Wick Hill

  • Our technicians find out what got in, how much, and if the engine has run. The replies alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.
  • Our technicians clear the tank of all the tainted mixture.
  • We rinse the fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what's left in the fuel system isn't what started the trouble.
  • Our technicians put new diesel in and bleed your system.
  • Our technicians fire it up and check it runs smoothly on new diesel.

The car is then ready for you to drive away. All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted soon, lasting damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Wick Hill is a different matter

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your motor remains off — while this issue beneath it's a distinct one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication your fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal in Wick Hill has its own page with the full story — including why it is often the more significant of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Wick Hill?

What shifts the figure is set out below, because the job is not one job and we can't truthfully put a single figure on this page.

  • Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that proportion.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there sensibly?

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight instead of as a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.

Petrol in diesel queries from Wick Hill drivers

At a petrol station around Wick Hill, can you do a fuel drain there?

A good share of this work takes place there, so yes. Often, provided the site agrees: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something our technicians answer straight away.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether the engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mixture drawn through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable a lot more commonly than people expect.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate fault. So no. The tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to live with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Standing next to it?

That engine stays off.

If you have already driven it, stop somewhere safe, turn it off then keep it off. This is recoverable from far more frequently than drivers fear, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
