Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Wilberfoss?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Wilberfoss and the remainder of East Riding of Yorkshire. The first thing to do is not to start your engine. While the engine has not yet been started and the petrol is still in the tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. Ring us and our engineers can show you what follows from here before you attempt anything else.

What to do next about petrol in a diesel

  • Don't crank it — and never depend on it if it starts. This is the bit motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor fed diesel typically just cannot run, so the person stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol typically starts, ticks over and moves off just fine for a couple of miles. It's not okay. It is eating into your fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates — that high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition be also: switching it on is frequently enough to prime the system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into exactly those parts.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It leaves you a fuller tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage the way that advice presumes — so don't pour diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has not shifted is the easiest one to deal with, and we would sooner travel to a difficult place than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Storking Lane, switch the hazards on then leave it there.
  • Know where you are before calling. A postcode beginning YO41 5, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than showing up.
  • What was put in, approximately how many litres, and whether the motor has started — those three details decide the full job. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Tonight, please, not Monday. Driving it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has sent real quantity through the pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return trip would about double the figure to no gain. The Renault Megane can sit at York perfectly happily. Phone from the platform if quicker; standing over us whilst we work is not needed.

We will come out to you, empty the tank, purge your fuel lines and put new diesel in so you can head home. So if petrol went into your diesel Volkswagen Tiguan in Wilberfoss and you're stranded outside Co-op Food with a boot full of shopping, ring us — and never start it again to exit that space. A mile or so at gentle throttle uses hardly any of it, so such jobs tend to be the easy cases.

The components that should be getting oiled are grinding instead, and the car gives no sign of that: a diesel on a weakened tank starts and pulls away quite happily. Try the journey home from The Oddfellows Arms? Don't. Phone and leave the Dacia Duster where it is.

The smaller petrol nozzle goes into a modern diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical not sloppy. Unfamiliar locations see most of that for that reason. So: filled up by St John the Baptist without thinking, in a diesel Ford Fiesta you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anybody spots it, and miles settles how much petrol reaches the injectors.

Somebody sure of themselves will tell you to drain the car then put fresh diesel in. Half right, that. Try it on a diesel Vauxhall Insignia close to Low Catton Village Hall and the motor will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here's the problem: there is petrol left in the fuel filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the motor does is suck it back through your pump again. Emptying a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left that tank. Phone us. The system gets flushed, the fuel filter comes off where there is one worth removing, and that is what separates a fixed vehicle from one that only starts.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Wilberfoss

Can petrol be drained from your diesel on the forecourt?

Most of this job starts at the pump, which means a big part of it gets finished there. If you are still on the forecourt at JET, that is typically where the drain happens — we operate on garage forecourts routinely, with the station's consent.

No place except a forecourt can this be halted with your motor still untouched. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a calamity, and our technicians can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the keys.

Away from the petrol pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the staff help you move it. Well worth doing. Rolling it four lengths does not justify cranking it.

Will our engineers serve your part of Wilberfoss?

Wilberfoss is a village, so our technicians get out to the town and to the places by it on the same trips: Newton upon Derwent, High Catton, Kexby, Low Catton and Elvington.

Our technicians do come. The places above are merely the closest neighbours, and a page is there for most locations across East Riding of Yorkshire, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Ring us to check rather than assuming, particularly where you're on the boundary or somewhere your phone misreads.

Look at this map for the patch shown here. Your vehicle never needs to move to us. Our technicians work over every bit of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stranded by the kerb anywhere in Wilberfoss?

Not everyone finds a safe place to pull in. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Pear Tree Close as you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call so often that it is the normal kind.

Fine there? Wait by it. Not fine? Step out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. However difficult the location, it's no bother for us to come to it, and that's a lot better for the car than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has moved

under 15 miles from Wilberfoss, the local M62 is what matters here. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the next junction that is sensible, pull up there, and never start the car to move it. Long run? Anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the phone, as it alters what goes in our van.

Where's Wilberfoss?

Wilberfoss is a village situated on the banks of the River Derwent in the East Riding of Yorkshire, with a population of around 1381 residents. Wilberfoss has a mix of housing types, but detached homes are the most prevalent, and the village is located near other small settlements such as Newton upon Derwent and Kexby. Wilberfoss sits at a low elevation of approximately 15 metres above sea level, close to the city of York. Wilberfoss is about 7.8 miles from York, making it a commuter option for those working in the city.

Once our engineers reach you in Wilberfoss: what we do

  • Three things get checked before any price — the fuel that got in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • Our technicians clear your tank of the polluted mixture.
  • Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever is left afterwards isn't the thing that started the problem.
  • Your system gets primed, on new diesel.
  • We turn it on and confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

At that point it is ready to set off. We do all of it wherever the vehicle has stopped, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and if it has been caught early, it's very unusual for there to be lasting damage.

A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Wilberfoss

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the motor stays off — while the problem underneath it is a different one altogether. The protection a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Wilberfoss page. Both are ours to handle.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Wilberfoss

One figure wouldn't be honest here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

  • This is the main one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that ratio.
  • Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the car is, and if a van can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a straight answer instead of a range. If it is not time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Wilberfoss motorists

At a petrol station in Wilberfoss, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it's where a fair portion of this work takes place. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there's possible.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your motor has run counts a lot more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, and leave the car off. Driving moves the issue along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you is not restarting it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a separate problem from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. The pump still has to cope with it, because the tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

No. We drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

Still with the car?

Turned off is the way the car stays.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, turn off, then let it remain that way. Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best position available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
