Willaston: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Don't start the engine. While the fuel is still sitting in that tank and the engine has not been started, a drain is nearly always all it requires — and that is decided in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they stand, throughout Willaston and the rest of Cheshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. Call us before everything else begins, so you'll hear what happens after that.
What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn
- Whenever you drive, the pump and your injectors wear. That's why you don't crank it, and why you don't rely on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel specifically — the bit people get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine typically won't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.
- Flicking the ignition on often primes the system, and priming is what moves petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition alone.
- Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage the way that advice suggests — so do not put diesel on top to dilute it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Stay still if it is safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Murrayfield Drive, anywhere — a tricky place for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to deal with than a motor that never shifted.
- A van arriving rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode starting CW5 6, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Get both ready before you call.
- Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three queries — what went in, approximately how much, plus whether your car has been started. The replies settle all that happens next.
Do not take it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has passed through the high-pressure pump in real quantity on the road in, and the trip back would close to double that for nothing at all. Phone — the platform is fine. There is no need to stand over your Renault Clio outside Nantwich while the work gets done, and we would very much rather hear from you tonight than find out on Monday.
We'll come out to you, empty the tank, flush those fuel lines and put fresh diesel in so you can get home. So if petrol went into your diesel Volkswagen Tiguan in Willaston and you're stranded at Sainsbury's with a boot full of shopping, call us — and don't fire it up once more to leave that bay. A mile or so at light throttle uses hardly any fuel, which is why such jobs are usually the easy cases.
Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and usually it will not run, and so the driver stops there and the damage stops with them. Reverse it — petrol into a diesel — and the thing fires up, ticks over and moves off as though nothing had happened, while the high-pressure pump works without the protection the fuel is meant to be providing. That's the catch, and it is why your diesel Peugeot 308 will have felt completely ordinary coming back from Willaston Primary Academy. They all do. From the driver's seat there's nothing to alert you about, and so nothing tells you. Call us with approximately how far you went, and how hard; the second answer matters more than the first.
Why we're firm about not driving on: your pump sits before the fuel injectors, so whatever a worn pump loses passes downstream with the fuel. Leave the BMW 5 Series by St Luke then ring us.
Knocking, an uneven idle, white smoke, a throttle gone soft. That is a wrongly fuelled diesel Ford Kuga telling you what's wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, close to Willaston Bowling Club or anywhere else, and do not restart the vehicle to find a better location.
Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel
Forecourts are where this work usually starts, and where a good portion of that ends. We operate on station forecourts routinely, with the owner's consent, and so if you're still at Sainsbury's that's normally where the drain happens.
Nowhere but a garage can the mistake be caught with your engine still unrun. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the keys.
Staff will normally help out pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next driver get past. Take the assistance. Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.
Coverage around Willaston
These same rounds take us to Wistaston, Blakelow, Wells Green, Butt Green and Wistaston Green besides Willaston, which is a rural village.
Not on that list? It tells you nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and nearly all towns across Cheshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Close to a boundary, or anywhere your phone can't find? Contact us to check instead of guessing.
Look at this map for the patch included here. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: all of it is ground our engineers serve, and none of that asks your vehicle to come to us.
Kerbside stops in Willaston
Not everyone gets the chance to pull in somewhere suitable. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Victoria Mill Drive because you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it's the normal kind.
Stay beside the vehicle when it is sensible to wait there, but out of the car when it is not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier. Pressing on does the car far more harm than our van driving out to an inconvenient location, and that's no trouble for us.
Petrol in a diesel, but your car has moved
The local M6 is the one which counts now, and sits under 10 miles from Willaston. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, instead of a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.
Take the first junction that is safe, pull up there, and never start the car to move it. Presume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you ring. What our engineers bring differs.
About Willaston
Willaston is a village in Cheshire, situated inland at an elevation of 51 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Willaston lies near the villages of Wistaston, Blakelow, and Wells Green, and is approximately 13 miles from Stoke-on-Trent. Willaston has a population of around 2099 residents, and is located in the North West region of England. Willaston is also relatively distant from London, at a distance of around 147 miles.
Our call-out in Willaston, step by step
- The replies alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of that, and if your motor has run.
- The contaminated fuel is drawn from your tank.
- What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what created the problem, so the lines get cleaned and your filter cleaned.
- Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.
- It's started with new diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it is running properly.
Then it's ready to pull away. There's no need for a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's noticed quickly, lasting damage is very unusual.
AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Willaston?
If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first step is the same — never start the vehicle — yet the fault isn't. Petrol thins your diesel and strips the lubrication the system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and deposits in its place.
Both are ours. There is a separate Willaston page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.
What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Willaston
Our technicians cannot put one number on this page honestly, since this job is not one job. What shifts it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that ratio.
- Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
- Whether our van can safely reach the vehicle and work on it, which depends on where the vehicle is.
Tell us your vehicle, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer rather than a range. For the car at home that is going nowhere and is not time-critical, is fine too.
Petrol in diesel: common queries in Willaston
Fuel drains on a Willaston petrol station forecourt
Yes, and it is where a large portion of this work happens. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the site's permission we work at BP and the other forecourts around town all the time.
Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?
Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mixture sucked through it.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle
Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what takes the problem from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it's fixable a lot more commonly than people expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
No. Carried out properly, emptying and rinsing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to stay off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. It belongs to a different fault from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. The pump still has to cope with it, since your tank still has petrol in it after that.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, as our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.
Is your vehicle still with you?
Keep the car turned off.
Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, turn off, then let the car remain that way. Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best position available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
