Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Williamsburgh? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, all over Williamsburgh and the remainder of Renfrewshire. The first thing to do is not to start your engine. When your engine has not yet run and the petrol is still sitting in your tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much went in. Our technicians can explain what the following move is. Ring us — it goes ahead of all else.

What to do first about petrol in a diesel

  • Do not start the car — and never trust it when it starts. This is the bit most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine fed diesel typically just can't run, so the driver stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel fed petrol usually starts, ticks over and moves off perfectly well for several miles. It's not okay. It's wearing out that fuel system while you drive.
  • Leave your ignition off as well. Diesel has two jobs: it ignites, and before it ignites it protects that injection pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Flicking the ignition on is usually sufficient to prime that system, which draws the petrol out of your tank and into just those components.
  • Do not tip diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage the way that guidance presumes, and topping up clears nothing — it only leaves you a fuller tank of the same blend. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay put if it's sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Ladyburn Street, anywhere — a difficult spot for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to handle than a car that never moved.
  • Keep your position ready before you dial. A postcode starting PA1 1 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between a van showing up and our van circling.
  • What was put in, approximately how many litres, and if the car has run — the three details decide the entire visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Passat, parked outside Paisley Canal since first thing? The wait has lost you nothing — fuel in a tank is dormant. It was the trip in that pushed diluted diesel through your pump. Phone us before you collect the vehicle.

Simple, these ones, and the reason is the mileage: a mile at gentle throttle draws very little diesel. Petrol into a diesel Nissan Qashqai somewhere around Williamsburgh, a boot packed with shopping, and you stuck outside Morrisons — ring us. Leaving the space isn't worth another start. That tank gets cleared where it stands, your fuel lines cleaned, new diesel in, and you get home.

You'll be advised to shift the vehicle out of that gateway and deal with it later. Do not. On the zig-zags by the local primary school, a misfuelled Mercedes C-Class running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Start it three more times being courteous and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime drags more petrol beyond your filter toward the pump. Let them moan. Phone.

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off then ring us. Happy on the way out to East End Park, sluggish on the way back? Then look at the tank. Petrol dilutes diesel; thinner fuel seeps past the close-fitting parts that build injection pressure; and the further the diesel Skoda Superb drove, the less of that pressure it held.

Repaired and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is the system: we flush it, and take the fuel filter off where there's a workable one. Compare that with the certain advice you will get — drain the vehicle, refill with fresh diesel. Only half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Hyundai Tucson near Sherwood Parish Church and it'll start, which is precisely why the advice sounds reasonable. Then your engine sucks the petrol left behind in the filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, because draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Williamsburgh

Clearing petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

Much of the work starts at the pump, which means a big part of it ends up finished at one. The drain normally takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at Morrisons? Given the owner's consent, that's somewhere our technicians work, and regularly.

Before the motor has run — a garage is the single setting it ends up halted. We can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been switched on and moved there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump, right from that tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to go past that tank to your lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for your key are what determine that.

Out from the pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the staff help you move the car. Worth it. Shifting the car four lengths doesn't merit starting it.

Coverage around Williamsburgh

Seedhill, Ralston, Blackhall, Whitehaugh, Paisley — every one of these on our trips that take us over to Williamsburgh as well, a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on this list it does not mean we never come — there are separate pages for the majority of locations in Renfrewshire, and the ones named above are merely the nearest neighbours. Contact us to enquire instead of guessing — borders particularly, and wherever your satnav can struggle with.

The map marks the ground the page covers. We work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of that, and the car does not need to travel to us.

Stuck at the kerb somewhere around Williamsburgh?

The chance to pull over anywhere safe does not come to everybody. Set off, then noticed? Finished up by the verge on Unsted Place, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards going? That is a common call here. Not an odd one.

Out of the motor if it is not safe to sit inside, by it if it is. Never restart your motor to nurse it somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mixture further into the fuel system. We'll bring the van to an inconvenient spot without any trouble, and for the vehicle that is a lot better than carrying on.

Driven it already? Pull in, and check below

Here is where the M8 comes in, under 3 miles from Williamsburgh. It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is some smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Pull off at the first sensible exit, switch off, and never start the car to move it. Assume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you ring. What our engineers bring differs.

Our job around Williamsburgh, step by step

  • We ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has the motor run? Those replies shape what the work actually is.
  • Out goes the polluted fuel.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.
  • Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • It's fired up with clean diesel in it, and we make sure that it is running smoothly.

That has it ready to pull away. There is no need for a garage at any point, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it is noticed soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Williamsburgh is a different job

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your motor stays off — while the issue under it's a separate one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and residue.

Our technicians handle both, and AdBlue removal in Williamsburgh has its own page with the details — including why it's often the more significant of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Williamsburgh

What changes the figure is listed below, since the job is not one job and our technicians can't frankly put a single number on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that proportion.
  • Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and whether a van can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and if the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Not urgent, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Things our engineers get about petrol in diesel around Williamsburgh

I am on a forecourt in Williamsburgh. Can you drain the vehicle here?

A large share of this work happens there, so yes. Often, provided the site agrees: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that location is something our technicians answer on the spot.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is if that blend has been pulled through your fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. It's recoverable a lot more commonly than people assume, even though driving is what moves the issue from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It is not an alteration, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has weakened isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different fault. So no. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Still with your vehicle?

Your engine remains off.

Switch it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.

Throughout Renfrewshire and in Williamsburgh: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
