Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Willow Field?

With that tank still holding the fuel and the motor not yet run, nearly every job takes only a drain, so leave your engine off. That outcome is settled in the minutes straight after filling up, rather than by the amount that went in. Across Willow Field and the rest of West Yorkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Ring us so our team shall explain what follows after that before you try anything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • Don't start the vehicle. Turned on anyway? Then never rely on it. Diesel in a petrol car typically cannot run, so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away fine, for a few miles. People get that confused. It is not fine — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.
  • Leave the ignition off also. Diesel performs two roles: it burns, and before it burns it lubricates your high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Switching your ignition on is frequently sufficient to prime your system, which draws that petrol out of the tank then into exactly those parts.
  • That advice supposes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A vehicle that has never shifted is the simplest one to deal with, and so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Willowfield Road? Hazards on, then leave the vehicle there. A tricky location works for us better than a started diesel.
  • Get your location ready before you call. A postcode that starts HX2 7 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van showing up and a van circling.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Say what was put in, roughly how much, plus if the engine has fired. Those three details shape your whole job.

Do not run it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has run through that injection pump in real volume on the way in, and the way back would close to double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is good. There is no need to stand over that Volkswagen Passat outside Sowerby Bridge whilst the work happens, and we'd far rather talk to you tonight than discover on Monday.

Hazards on. Ignition off. Phone us. It's twenty to nine outside Warley Road Primary Academy, you are late, and the receipt says unleaded — and though three miles in the Nissan Qashqai feels like nothing, fuel is metered on demand, and a rushed drive asks for plenty of that.

Standing still, it gets no worse. The pump isn't turning, and so whatever happened on the way to West View Park in that diesel Ford Focus is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on the engine to find more of it.

A throttle gone dead, white smoke, a ragged idle, rattling: that is a wrongly fuelled diesel Vauxhall Insignia telling you what is wrong. Do not start the car to find a better location — switch off where you have stopped, close to Jami' Masjid Noorani or anywhere else.

That deadness is the fuel failing to build pressure fully, not the engine packing up — and with no warning light for it, cars in that position generally get driven again before anyone calls. Please don't. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone dead, idle turned uneven, and a diesel Volvo XC60 now sitting near St Hilda. Switch the car off and call us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Willow Field

Can petrol be taken out of a diesel on the forecourt?

A good portion of this job ends up done at the pump, as that's where it mostly begins. Our technicians work on garage forecourts all the time, with the station's consent, and so if you are still at the nearest petrol station that is normally where this drain happens.

At the forecourt, it gets halted with the engine never run, and nowhere else manages that. The few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for the key decide how much requires cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as that tank. It is not a calamity, and our technicians can still deal with it where the vehicle is.

Out from the pump, the next motorist can get by — so yes, let the staff help you move the vehicle. Worth doing. Moving the car four bays does not warrant firing the engine.

Coverage in Willow Field

As a residential suburb, Willow Field sees a regular call, and the places close by come with it on that same round: Highroad Well and Norton Tower, Warley Town and Pye Nest, Pellon.

If yours is not on the list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are separate pages for nearly all locations in West Yorkshire, and the ones listed above are just the closest neighbours. Contact us and enquire instead of presuming, particularly if you are on the border or somewhere your satnav misreads.

See the map for the ground covered here. We work by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of it, and your car never needs to move to us.

Kerbside breakdowns across Willow Field

Not everybody gets a chance to stop somewhere sensible. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Bairstow Lane because you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Out of your car when it is not wise to be inside, by it if it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the blend further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. Pressing on does your car far more harm than our van driving out to a difficult place, and that's no problem for us.

Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has moved

This is where the M62 counts, under 5 miles out of Willow Field. A drop in power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Pull off at the first sensible exit, switch off, and don't start the vehicle to reposition. Presume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Say so when you phone. What our engineers bring changes.

What our technicians do when our engineers reach you in Willow Field

  • We ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers shape what the work really is.
  • The contaminated fuel is drawn out of that tank.
  • What is remaining in your system should not be what caused the issue, and so the lines get purged and the fuel filter cleared.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
  • It is fired up with clean diesel in it, and we make sure that it's running correctly.

The car is then ready for you to pull away. Our engineers do all of this wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed quickly, it's very rare for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Willow Field is a separate job

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the motor remains off — while the problem under it is a different one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the lubrication the system depends on. Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Willow Field page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Willow Field pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One figure would not be fair here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the car is, and if our van can sensibly reach and work on it.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range. Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel around Willow Field

Fuel drains on a Willow Field petrol station forecourt

A fair part of this work happens there, so yes. We work at Asda and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether we can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run. What decides how much work is needed is if that mixture has been pulled through your fuel system — because although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of your tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable far more frequently than people expect.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, draining and purging is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a separate issue from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores. Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to put up with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Is the vehicle still with you?

Do not switch it back on.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, switch off, then let the vehicle remain that way. A stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than motorists fear.
