Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Windermere

If you have not turned on your engine yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is almost always what a vehicle requires while the fuel is still in your tank and your engine has not run, which is why it is the next few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has stopped in Windermere or the remainder of Cumbria, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there. Phone before everything else begins, and you'll hear what comes from there.

Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine for a few miles. Most people have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't start the vehicle. And having started, don't trust it: the fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.
  • Leave your ignition alone as well. Diesel performs two roles: it burns, and before it ignites it protects your high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Switching your ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime the system, which pulls that petrol out of that tank then into just those components.
  • Do not dilute it. Diesel put on top removes nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • A motor that has not shifted is the easiest one to sort out, so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Main Road? Hazards on, then keep it there. A tricky location works for us better than a started engine.
  • A van showing up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode starting LA23 1, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Keep both prepared before you call.
  • Three facts settle the entire job: the stuff you tipped in, the ballpark measure of it, and if it has been going since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

The high-pressure pump did that morning commute labouring on a fluid that had given up a great deal of the protection it is made for. Diesel greases that pump, and the fuel injectors with it, before any of your fuel ignites; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So take a diesel Renault Megane, fuelled at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and left sitting at the nearest station until you realise around eleven. Three hours of sitting have altered nothing about it. The few miles before that altered a lot, which is why the question we ask is about mileage not time. Call us. Leave the vehicle right where it is.

Your diesel Peugeot 308 will have felt perfectly usual on the way back from St Martin & St Mary Church of England Primary School. They do, and that's the catch with petrol in a diesel instead of the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and it generally will not run, and so the person stops and the harm stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, idles and pulls away as though nothing has happened — all the while the high-pressure fuel pump keeps working without the protection your fuel is meant to be providing. Nothing tells you, because from behind the wheel there's nothing to warn you about. Call us with approximately how far you drove and how hard you pushed it; the second one matters more than the first.

You head off at the end, once our engineers have fired it up and made sure it runs properly on clean diesel, with the system primed. Before that, in the car park at The Crafty Baa, the tainted fuel comes out of that tank, the lines get flushed and the fuel filter comes off where your Audi A4 has a serviceable one. Everything starts with three questions when our engineers get to the car: what was put in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

Clearing the Mercedes E-Class, changing your filter where there's a workable one, cleaning your lines, putting clean fuel through the entire system: that is the job, and it is shaped by the worst of it waiting in the fuel lines instead of in the tank by this point. Three things help when you ring from close to The Phoenix Centre — which side the filler is on, whether our van can pull up next to without blocking the road, and if the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual location we work, and so the place itself is hardly ever the issue. A cramped parking space beats a car driven somewhere more handy.

Hire car? Company car? Phone them before us. Some contracts want the firm to sign off the work, and that is much quicker dealt with up front than later on. Then call us about the BMW 5 Series, the diesel one, by St Mary's Church. Don't worry that you can't say how full your tank was — nearly no one can two days into a motor, and it's something our technicians work out there. The reason for asking: damage from petrol in a diesel is a matter of share. A few litres in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mixture than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of it, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger blend, more rattling, more smoke, flatter throttle.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Windermere

On the forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

Most of the job begins at the pump, which means a big chunk of that is finished at one. The drain usually takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the site's permission, that's somewhere we work, and often.

Before your engine has run — a garage is the single place the mistake gets stopped. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and our technicians can still sort it out where it is. It does mean the lines and your filter need rinsing as well as the tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the keys.

Attendants will usually help out pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Take the offer. Shifting the car four lengths doesn't justify starting the motor.

Places our team serve around Windermere

Those same trips get us to Droomer, Heathwaite, The Common, Bowness-on-Windermere and Troutbeck Bridge along with Windermere, which is a riverside town.

If yours isn't on that list it doesn't mean we never come — there are pages for most towns across Cumbria, and the ones named above are simply the immediate neighbours. Ring us and check rather than guessing, especially when you are on the border or anywhere a satnav struggles with.

The map shows the area the page spans. The lot is territory our technicians cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't bring the car anywhere.

Windermere: stranded wherever you pulled up

Not everybody finds a sensible spot to stop. A normal call for us and not an unusual one: noticed after setting off, finished up along the verge beside College Road or at a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.

Clear of the motor if it isn't wise to sit there, by it when it is. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the trouble: fire it up to get to somewhere better and that blend goes further into the system with every mile driven. A van heading to an inconvenient location is no trouble for us, and it is far better for your car than driving on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

The local M6 is the road which counts now, and it lies under 15 miles from Windermere. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Pull off at the first safe exit, switch off, and never restart it to reposition. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you ring. It affects what our engineers bring.

Windermere itself

Windermere is a town situated in a picturesque riverside setting in Cumbria, England. It is located near a large body of water, which is a notable feature of the area. The town is nestled within the Lake District, a region known for its natural beauty. Windermere is surrounded by stunning scenery, making it a unique and attractive place.

What our engineers do when our technicians reach you around Windermere

  • Our engineers ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has the motor run? Those answers change what the work really is.
  • Out flows the polluted fuel.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later is not the thing that created the issue.
  • Our engineers put clean diesel in and bleed the fuel system.
  • It's fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians check that it is running smoothly.

That leaves it ready to set off. We do everything wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and if it has been noticed early, it's very unusual for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Windermere?

Do not crank it: that opening step applies whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the issue itself. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the system that relies on it. That's petrol. Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

AdBlue removal in Windermere has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is usually the more serious of the two. We cover both.

Windermere pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Honestly, no single price belongs on a page like this. This job changes. Here is what changes it:

  • Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is sensible for a technician.

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and whether your engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

Petrol in diesel questions from Windermere motorists

At a petrol station around Windermere, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Our technicians visit Cosy Logs and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you whether we can work there.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mixture sucked through it.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what moves the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable much more regularly than people expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the car.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain and flush carried out correctly is not a modification and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has weakened is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a separate fault. So no. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Your engine stays off.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off then leave it off. A parked, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more regularly than people assume.
