Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Windle

With the tank still holding the petrol and your engine not yet run, nearly every job takes only a drain, so leave the engine off. That result is decided in the minutes immediately after filling up, rather than by the amount that got in. All over Windle and the remainder of Merseyside, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. One call to us is plenty: our engineers shall explain what comes next. Do this first.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

  • Do not start it. Turned on anyway? Then never believe it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally won't run, so the motorist stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off normally, for a few miles. Motorists get that backwards. It's not okay — your fuel system is wearing down every mile you cover.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it lubricates — that high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition alone too: switching it on is often enough to prime that system, and priming moves petrol from that tank into exactly those components.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage in the way that guidance suggests — so do not pour diesel on top to thin it. Grade is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that has not shifted is the easiest one to sort out, and we'd rather come to a difficult spot than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Lawrence Road, put your hazards on and keep the car there.
  • The van showing up instead of circling depends on two things: a postcode starting WA10 6, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Get both ready before you phone.
  • Three facts shape the entire job: the fuel you poured in, the ballpark volume involved, plus if it has been running since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Quarter past eight. A fast top-up on the trip in. Around eleven it hits you, and by then your diesel Volkswagen Golf has stood outside St Helens Central for three hours. Ring us then leave the vehicle where it sits. What matters is the journey in, as diesel both burns and — before that — greases the pump and your injectors, whereas petrol only ever burns. Those couple of miles ran the pump on a fluid stripped of much of its protection, and no volume of sitting in a car park gives any of that back. Hence the question about miles instead of hours standing, and hence the advice to leave the keys alone till our technicians turn up.

How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, and so have both prepared. Your Peugeot 308 will have seemed entirely normal on the way back from Bleak Hill Primary School — they all do, and that is the snag. Diesel into a petrol car usually will not run at all: the motorist stops, and so does the wear. Petrol into a diesel fires up, idles, moves off like nothing happened, while your high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the protection your fuel should be giving it. No warning arrives, as behind the wheel nothing looks wrong.

The parts that should be getting lubricated are wearing instead, and your vehicle gives no sign of that: a diesel on a diluted tank starts and drives off perfectly well. Chance the drive home from Gerard Arms? No. Ring us then leave the Nissan Qashqai where it is.

Sitting still, it gets no worse. The pump is not turning, so whatever happened on the way to Ruskin Sport Village in that diesel Audi A4 is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on your engine to find more of that.

Why so direct about leaving the keys alone? Since the pump is before the fuel injectors, and a worn-out one sends whatever it loses downstream with the fuel. Ring us. Leave the Dacia Duster by Smithy Heritage Centre.

Can petrol be taken out of a diesel on a forecourt?

Pumps are where this job usually begins, and where a good share of that finishes. If you are still on the forecourt at Tesco, that's generally where the drain gets done — we operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement.

Nowhere other than a forecourt can this be halted with the motor still cold. Fuel sucked out of that tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the engine is started and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the fuel filter and the lines along with that tank. That's still not a disaster, and our engineers sort it out where your car sits. What determines it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Clear of the pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the staff help you move the car. Well worth it. Rolling the car four bays does not merit starting the engine.

Service around Windle

Those same runs take us to Dentons Green, Eccleston, Windlehurst, Newtown and Cowley Hill besides Windle, which is a residential suburb.

There are separate pages for the majority of towns around Merseyside, and the ones listed above are merely the immediate neighbours — so yours being absent from this list means nothing whatsoever about whether our technicians come. Near a boundary, or anywhere the satnav misreads? Call us and check instead of guessing.

The patch this page covers appears on this map. We work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and your car does not need to come to us.

Stuck by the kerbside near Windle

Not everyone has a chance to stop somewhere safe. If you noticed after setting off and finished up on the verge on Rutherford Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that is a common call for us and not an unusual one.

Out of the vehicle when it is not safe to sit there, with it if it is. Never restart it to get to a better spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mix deeper into your fuel system. A technician driving to a difficult place is no trouble for us, and it is far better for the car than pressing on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where the M57 matters, under 5 miles from Windle. A loss of power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, instead of a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Get off at the next safe junction, switch off, and do not start the vehicle to move it. Long drive? Anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the call, since it affects what goes in the van.

Where is Windle?

Windle is a suburban area in Merseyside, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 41 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Windle lies approximately 9.5 miles from Liverpool and 175 miles from London, forming part of the larger urban landscape of the North West. Windle is close to nearby places such as Dentons Green, Eccleston, and Windlehurst, and has a population of around 4512 residents. Windle's location near the river contributes to its setting and character.

What our engineers do when our engineers reach you in Windle

  • Three things get checked before any price — your fuel that was put in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • Away comes the tainted mixture.
  • We flush the lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what is remaining in your system isn't what started the problem.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • The engine is turned on and tested to be sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

At that point it's ready to pull away. We do everything wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and if it has been noticed quickly, it's very rare for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Windle?

Don't crank it: that first rule holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the issue itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the lubrication your fuel system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and deposits.

AdBlue removal in Windle has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is often the more significant of the two. Our technicians handle both.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Windle

What moves the figure is set out below, because this job is not one job and we can't honestly put a single number on this page.

  • This is the key one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much the tank takes.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the car is, and if a technician can sensibly get to and work on it.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Things our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Windle

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Windle?

A large share of this work happens there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's consent we work at Texaco and the other forecourts locally all the time.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Driving shifts the problem along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly valuable thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It is not a modification, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a different fault from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind replaces. After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Wherever the vehicle is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.

Still with your car?

Don't turn the engine on again.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, then let it stay that way. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this a lot more than they need to.

Emptying misfuelled motors, Windle and the rest of Merseyside, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
