Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Withnoe? Don't Start It

Never start your engine. While the fuel is still inside the tank and the engine has not turned over, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes — and that gets decided in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, throughout Withnoe and the rest of Cornwall, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Phone before anything else begins, so you will learn what happens from there.

What to do first about petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will typically not run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for several miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't start the vehicle. And if started, never rely on it: that fuel system is grinding while you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why your ignition is left off also — flick it on and you frequently prime that system, and that's petrol exiting that tank for exactly those parts.
  • Never put diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance presumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it simply leaves you a fuller tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • We would rather travel to an awkward spot than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is easier to handle than a motor that has not shifted. On the verge on Snowdrop Crescent, that means hazards on and keep the vehicle.
  • A van arriving rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode that starts PL15 9, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Get both prepared before you call.
  • What got in, approximately how much, and if your car has fired — the three details settle the full job. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Can petrol be pumped out of a diesel on the forecourt?

Plenty of this job starts at a forecourt, so a fair part of that ends up done on site. If you are still at the forecourt at Tesco, that is generally where the drain gets done — we operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the site's consent.

Before your motor has run — the forecourt is the single setting the mistake ends up spotted. Fuel sucked out of that tank and through your filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the engine is switched on and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the fuel filter and your lines as well as your tank. That is still not a disaster, and our technicians put it right where your car is. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

The staff will usually help you move the vehicle out from the pump so the next driver can get by. It is worth doing. Firing the car over four car lengths? Don't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Withnoe

We'll get to you, empty your tank, clean those fuel lines then put fresh diesel in so you can drive home. So if petrol went into the diesel Skoda Octavia in Withnoe and you're sat at Tesco with a boot loaded with shopping, phone us — and don't crank it once more to exit that spot. A mile or so at light throttle pulls little of it, so those are often the easy ones.

The components that should be getting protected are wearing down instead, and your motor gives no sign of that: a diesel on a weakened tank starts and moves off perfectly well. Risk the journey home from Launceston Arms? Not a chance. Phone then leave the Ford Focus where it sits.

Our engineers clean the fuel lines instead of only emptying the tank, and the reason is that weakened fuel has already reached your filter and your pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The distance really assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Audi A3 parked up by The Gateway Centre a few hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Ring us and leave it off.

Hire car? Company car? Ring them before us. Some agreements want the firm to authorise the work, and that is much faster dealt with up front than after that. Then call us about the Vauxhall Astra, the diesel one, near Launceston Library. Don't worry that you cannot say how full your tank was — nearly nobody can two days into a car, and it's something our technicians check there. The reason for asking: damage from petrol in a diesel is a matter of ratio. A couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mixture than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of it, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mix, more knocking, more smoke, flatter throttle.

The filter, your lines, your pump and its rail: that is where that mixture is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with that tank contents. So that tank is not where most of the damage waits by this point, and a diesel Mercedes A-Class that made it close to War Memorial needs the circuit purged instead of emptied.

Withnoe plus the areas near it

Being a rural village, Withnoe has a frequent call, and the villages nearby go along on the same run: Stourscombe and Kensey Valley Meadow, Launceston and Chapel, Lawhitton.

Not on that list? It means nothing. The places above are simply the closest few, and most places across Cornwall have a page of their own somewhere on the site. Ring us and ask instead of assuming, especially where you're on a border or anywhere your phone misreads.

See this map for the ground shown here. We work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of that, and your car never needs to move to us.

Stuck by the kerbside anywhere around Withnoe?

The chance to pull over somewhere suitable doesn't fall to everybody. Set off, then noticed? Ended up on the verge on A388, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards going? That is a common call here. Not a rare one.

Stay by your car when it is safe to sit in it, but clear of it when it's not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the mix further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer. Carrying on does your car far more harm than a technician heading out to an inconvenient spot, and that's no problem for us.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

The M5 is the one that counts now, and runs under 50 miles from Withnoe. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power ebbs away, your idle turns lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Pull off at the next safe exit, turn off, and don't restart the car to reposition. Presume the worst of it on a long run. Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you call. What we bring differs.

Where's Withnoe?

Withnoe is a village in Cornwall, situated inland at an elevation of 147 metres, and is located near the towns of Launceston and Stourscombe. Withnoe has a population of around 1820 people, and its housing stock is predominantly semi-detached. Withnoe is approximately 20 miles from Plymouth, and is surrounded by rolling countryside and areas of natural beauty like Kensey Valley Meadow.

What comes next when we reach you in Withnoe

  • Three things get established before any price — the fuel that was put in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Away flows the contaminated mixture.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
  • Your engine is fired up and tested to make sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. Our engineers do all of it wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and if it has been caught early, it is very rare for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Withnoe?

If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is the same — do not crank it — but this issue isn't. The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Withnoe has its own page with the detail — including why it's often the more serious of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Withnoe?

One figure would not be fair here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

  • This is the key one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much that tank holds.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can safely get to the vehicle and work on it, which depends on where the vehicle is.

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and whether the motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. For the car at home that is going nowhere and is not time-critical, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Withnoe motorists

I'm on a forecourt around Withnoe. Can you drain the car here?

Plenty of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Our technicians work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the station's consent — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether the engine has run matters far more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is if that mix has been pulled through the fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what shifts the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it is fixable a lot more often than drivers assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a change and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a separate fault from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind replaces. Your pump still has to put up with it, as that tank still has petrol in it later.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. We drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a dealership.

Still with the car?

That engine stays off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, turn off, and let the vehicle remain that way. This is recoverable from much more commonly than people fear, and a still, cold car is the best position to be in.
