Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Withystakes?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, all over Withystakes and the rest of Staffordshire. The very first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. While the motor has not been started and the fuel is still sitting in that tank, a tank drain is almost always all it takes, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much got in. Ring us and then we can show you what happens from here before you attempt anything else.

What to do first about petrol in a diesel

  • Don't crank it. Started all the same? Then never rely on it. Diesel in a petrol car normally cannot run, so the person stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off normally, for a couple of miles. People get that muddled. It's not okay — the fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it greases — your injection pump, those injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition off too: switching it on is frequently sufficient to prime the system, and priming draws petrol from the tank into precisely those parts.
  • Topping up takes out nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance suggests — so don't tip diesel on top to water down it. Type is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • We would much rather drive to a difficult place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, sit tight. Nothing is simpler to sort out than a vehicle that hasn't moved. On the verge on Rownall Road, that means hazards on then keep the car.
  • Before you ring, have your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode beginning ST9 0 — that is what settles whether the van shows up or circles.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what got in, approximately how many litres, and whether the car has been run. The answers settle everything that comes after.

Tonight, please, instead of Monday. Taking it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has forced real volume through the pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return journey would roughly double the figure to no gain. The Volkswagen Golf can stay outside Longton perfectly well. Phone from the platform if simpler; standing over us whilst our technicians work is not needed.

Tell us this much and our technicians can work with it: a diesel Renault Clio, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off at Heron Foods now. Time passed is not the thing our technicians need. Fuel pulled by the pump is.

A diesel pump meters fuel to demand, and a rushed morning dash demands plenty — so three miles in the Skoda Octavia seems like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine outside Werrington Primary School, already late, the receipt in your hand saying unleaded: hazards on, ignition off, phone us.

The pump sits ahead of your injectors, and so whatever a worn-out one sheds passes on with your fuel — which is why we're direct about not driving on. Call us, and leave the diesel BMW 5 Series where it is by St Philip.

Clattering? Lumpy idle? White smoke, throttle gone soft? That's your misfilled Vauxhall Astra, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, perhaps near Werrington Library, then leave the restarting alone.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Withystakes

Can petrol be pumped from a diesel at the forecourt?

Much of the work starts at the pump, which means a good share of it is completed there. Our technicians work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the station's consent, and so if you are still at Wainwrights Coal Merchants Ltd. that's usually where the drain gets done.

Before the engine has run — the forecourt is the single location this gets stopped. Fuel drawn out of the tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the engine is started and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the fuel filter and the fuel lines together with that tank. That is still not a disaster, and we deal with it where the car stands. What settles it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

The attendants will usually offer to move the car out from the pump so the next motorist can get through. That's worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth a restart.

Service around Withystakes

Being a residential suburb, Withystakes gets a steady visit, whilst the villages close by go along on the same trip: Werrington and Southlow, Cellarhead and Armshead, Washerwall.

Our technicians do come. The places above are just the closest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of places in Staffordshire, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Call us to enquire rather than assuming — county lines above all, and anywhere your satnav may misread.

Look at the map for the patch shown on this page. The lot is ground our technicians cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never drive the car anywhere.

Roadside call-outs around Withystakes

Some people find no sensible spot to pull over whatsoever. If you noticed after setting off and ended up along the verge of Withystakes Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that's a common call for us rather than a rare one.

Stay with the motor when it is safe to wait inside, yet clear of it if it is not. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the problem: fire it up to get to somewhere safer and the mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered. A van coming to a difficult spot is no problem for us, and it's a lot better for the car than carrying on.

Run it already? Stop, then check below

Here is where the local M6 comes in, under 10 miles from Withystakes. A drop in power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Never restart it to reposition. Come off at the first safe exit then turn off. On a longer drive — anything approaching the under 5 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors, and tell us when you phone. It alters what we bring.

What our engineers do when our technicians arrive with you in Withystakes

  • Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • Your tank is cleared completely.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.
  • We pour fresh diesel in and prime the fuel system.
  • Our engineers start the engine and check it runs smoothly on new diesel.

From that point, you're ready to pull away. There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where the car is, and when it's spotted quickly, permanent damage is very rare.

A separate job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Withystakes

The issue is not the same, though the first step is — do not start it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. The protection a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Withystakes page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Withystakes

Honestly, no single number belongs on a page like this. This job varies. Here's what changes it:

  • Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the main one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your vehicle is, and whether a technician can safely get to and work on it.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range. For the car at home that is going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: common questions in Withystakes

At a petrol station in Withystakes, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a good part of this happens. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the station's permission our engineers visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether your engine has run counts much more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. What decides how much work is required is whether that mixture has been drawn through your fuel system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off, then leave the car off. Driving is what takes the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable far more commonly than people assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain and flush carried out properly is not a modification and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a different problem. So no. The tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to live with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There's no need to take it to a dealership, because our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is.

Waiting next to it?

Leave it shut off.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best position available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
