Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Wonersh?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, all over Wonersh and the remainder of Surrey. The first thing to do is not to start the motor. When the motor has not been started and the petrol is still inside the tank, a tank drain is almost always all it requires, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much went in. Ring us before everything else starts, and you will know what follows from there.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't start the vehicle — and never trust it when it fires up. Here is the bit motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor fed diesel normally just cannot run, so the motorist stops and the harm ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, idles and drives away quite happily for several miles. It is not all right. It is wearing the fuel system as you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors protected. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the ignition remains off as well — flick it on and you frequently prime that system, and that is petrol leaving that tank for exactly those parts.
  • Don't thin it. Diesel put on top takes out nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that has not moved is the easiest one to sort out, and we'd rather drive to a tricky spot than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Barnett Lane, switch your hazards on then keep it there.
  • Before you call, get your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting GU5 0 — that's what decides whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • Three answers settle the entire call-out: the stuff you put in, the approximate volume of it, and if anything has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

The trip back would about double it, for no purpose at all. One commute has already sent a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of your Renault Clio. So leave it where it is. Ring us from the platform if that's easier — nobody needs you standing over the vehicle at Shalford while our engineers work, and tonight is better than finding out on Monday.

You will be advised to shift the car clear of that gateway and sort it out later. Do not. On the zig-zags at Bramley CofE Infant School and Nursery, a wrongly fuelled Mercedes C-Class running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Start it three more times being helpful and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime draws more petrol beyond your filter towards the pump. Let them moan. Call us.

This is what a job in the car park outside Grantley Arms typically looks like. We get to the vehicle, ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has run since — these three replies decide much of the work. Then the contaminated mix comes out of that tank, the fuel lines get rinsed, and the filter comes off where your Vauxhall Astra has a replaceable one. Fresh diesel goes in and the fuel system is bled. Then our engineers start the car, confirm it runs properly, and you set off.

Three things help when you phone from near Lownsmead Church Hall: which side the filler is on, whether a technician can stand next to without blocking the road, and if your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common place our technicians work, and so the place itself is hardly ever the problem — we'd much rather deal with a narrow parking spot than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We'll drain your Peugeot 208, change the filter where there is a serviceable one, flush your lines and put fresh fuel through the full circuit, since by this point the worst of that is resting in your lines rather than in that tank.

That deadness is the fuel failing to build pressure correctly, not the engine packing up — and with no dashboard light for it, cars in that position normally get driven once more before anybody rings. Please don't. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone dead, idle turned uneven, and a diesel Kia Sportage now waiting close to Wonersh House. Switch the car off then phone us.

Can petrol be pumped from your diesel on a forecourt?

Most of the job begins at a forecourt, which means a big part of that is done at one. The drain usually takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at Asda? Given the site's agreement, that's somewhere our technicians work, and regularly.

A filling station is the only place this is caught before your motor has fired. Fuel sucked out of the tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when the engine is switched on and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the filter and your lines along with that tank. That's still not a disaster, and our technicians put it right where the vehicle stands. What settles it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

The staff will generally help you wheel the vehicle away from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get through. That is worth doing. Starting the car for four car lengths? No.

Areas we cover around Wonersh

As a village, Wonersh has a routine visit, while the villages close by go with it on that same run: Bramley and Norley Common, Blackheath and Chilworth, Lordshill Common.

We still come. Those names above are only the closest neighbours, and a page is there for most places across Surrey, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Presuming is the mistake to avoid, particularly on the border or anywhere your phone goes wrong. Contact us and enquire.

That map shows the area this page includes. The lot is ground we work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never bring your car anywhere.

Stuck at the kerbside anywhere in Wonersh?

The opportunity to pull over somewhere safe does not fall to everyone. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of The Street because you noticed after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it is the normal kind.

Clear of the motor if it's not wise to be inside, with it if it is. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the catch: start it up to reach somewhere handier and that blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled. However awkward the spot, it is no problem for us to come to it, and that's a lot better for your car than pressing on.

Run it already? Pull over, then read this

This is where the M25 counts, under 10 miles from Wonersh. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power ebbs away, the idle goes lumpy, and there may be smoke.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. Long run? Anything approaching the under 50 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the mixture. Say that on the call, because it changes what goes in our van.

Wonersh itself

Wonersh is a small village in Surrey, situated on the banks of the River Wey at an elevation of around 46 metres. Wonersh has a population of approximately 531 residents and is characterised by predominantly detached housing. Wonersh is located near the villages of Bramley and Blackheath, and is within commuting distance of London, being around 28 miles from the city centre. Wonersh is also close to the South Downs National Park, with the nearest city being Chichester, which is about 27 miles away.

What comes next when our technicians arrive with you in Wonersh

  • We check what went in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The responses alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing.
  • The tank gets drained of everything.
  • We flush the lines and clear the filter, and so what is remaining in your system isn't what caused the trouble.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
  • After it is turned on, our engineers check it runs properly on fresh diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. Long-term damage is very rare when it has been noticed early, and since everything is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Wonersh

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the motor remains off — while this problem underneath it is a different one altogether. The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens your diesel. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and residue in its place.

Both are ours. There is a separate Wonersh page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Wonersh

One number would not be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much the tank can hold.
  • The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there safely?

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and whether the motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

Questions our engineers get about petrol in diesel in Wonersh

Fuel drains on a Wonersh petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a big portion of this gets done. Regularly, provided the site agrees: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something we answer on the spot.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether the engine has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mixture pulled through it.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. It's recoverable far more often than drivers fear, even though driving is what takes the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a modification and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the car turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a separate fault from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores. Your pump still has to live with it, because the tank still has petrol in it after that.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Is the car still with you?

The engine remains off.

Switch it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.
