Woodford: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Woodford and the remainder of Devon. The first thing to do is not to start your engine. When the engine has not yet turned over and the petrol is still in your tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much went in. Our technicians shall tell you what the next move will be. Phone — it happens ahead of all else.

Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • As you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors wear down. That's why you do not fire it up, and why you do not trust it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel especially — the point drivers get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally won't run at all, which stops the person and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why your ignition stays off also — turn it on and you frequently prime your system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for just those parts.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage as that advice suggests — so don't put diesel on top to thin it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Sit tight if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Park Lane, anywhere — an awkward place for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to handle than a vehicle that never moved.
  • Before you ring, gather your location. Anything nearest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting TQ9 7 — that is what settles whether the van shows up or circles.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what was put in, about how much, and whether the engine has been started. Your replies determine whatever follows.

Draining petrol from a diesel at the forecourt

The work kicks off at the pump, typically. Quite often it finishes at one as well. Still at BP? Then that's normally where it happens. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the station.

Nowhere but a garage can it be halted with your engine still unstarted. We can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been started and driven there, and that pulled fuel through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from your tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to reach past your tank to the lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the key are what determine that.

Roll it out of the way if the attendants offer, and they generally will. The next customer gets past the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Moving the car four bays doesn't merit firing the engine.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Woodford

How much fuel your pump has drawn is what we're actually asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the call we hope for runs like this: diesel Renault Clio, a few litres of unleaded, a couple of miles done, now shut off at Sainsbury's.

Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and mostly it won't run, so the driver stops there and the harm stops with them. Flip it — petrol into a diesel — and the car fires up, ticks over and pulls away as though nothing had happened, whilst the high-pressure fuel pump works without the lubrication the fuel is supposed to be providing. That's the snag, and it's why your diesel Peugeot 308 will have seemed entirely usual coming back from Blackawton Primary School. They always do. From behind the wheel there's nothing to warn you about, and so nothing alerts you. Phone us with about how far you went, and how hard; the second answer counts more than the first.

Leave it overnight. Phone us in the morning. Nothing about a diesel Nissan Qashqai sitting in the car park at The George Inn worsens whilst it sits, tank of petrol or not, and this job remains a simple one right up until the moment it gets driven home. The question our engineers come with is about the drive there: a cold motor over a short run is where petrol combusts least well, and whatever fails to burn can work its way past the piston rings into the sump.

Out there normal, back gutless. If that was the trip to Bow Wood, look at the tank. Diesel gets diluted by petrol, and thin fuel seeps past the fine gaps supposed to build injection pressure — so every extra mile the diesel Ford Focus covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, turn off, phone us.

Hire car? Company car? Call them before us. Some contracts want the firm to authorise the work, and that is much quicker dealt with up front than later. Then ring us about the Vauxhall Astra, the diesel one, by St Michael's. Don't worry that you cannot say how full the tank was — almost nobody can two days into a motor, and it's something our engineers check on the spot. The reason for asking: damage from petrol in a diesel is a matter of share. A few litres in an almost empty tank make a far stronger mixture than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of that, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mix, more rattling, more smoke, flatter throttle.

Can we cover your corner of Woodford?

The same journeys bring us to Blackawton, Millcombe, Hutcherleigh, Bow and Halwell along with Woodford, which is a rural hamlet.

Not on the list? That means nothing. The places above are only the closest few, and most places around Devon have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Presuming is the mistake to resist, particularly on a boundary or somewhere your phone fails. Ring us to enquire.

Check the map for the patch included on this page. All of that is ground our engineers work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't move your vehicle anywhere.

Woodford: stuck where you parked

Some people get no safe place to stop whatsoever. If you realised after setting off and finished up on the verge on Cheavestone Lea, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that's a normal call for us instead of an odd one.

Wait beside the vehicle when it's sensible to wait there, but clear of the car when it's not. Never start it up to get to a nicer location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mix deeper into your fuel system. Driving on does the vehicle far more harm than a van heading out to an inconvenient location, and that is no trouble for us.

Run it already? Pull over, and read this

under 25 miles out of Woodford, the M5 is what matters here. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's some smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Presume the worst of that on a long run. Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you call. What our engineers bring alters.

All about Woodford

Woodford is a small hamlet in Devon, situated inland at an elevation of 84 metres, and is located near the villages of Blackawton and Millcombe. Woodford lies within the South West region of England, approximately 19.9 miles from Plymouth and 174.7 miles from London. Woodford has a population of around 511 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing.

What our engineers do when we get to you around Woodford

  • Our engineers ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has your engine run? Those answers change what the work really is.
  • Out flows the tainted fuel.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.
  • New diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
  • Our technicians fire it up and check it runs correctly on new diesel.

From there, you are ready to drive away. Our technicians do all of this wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted quickly, it's very rare for there to be permanent damage.

A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Woodford

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first rule is the same — don't crank it — but this problem isn't. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the protection the system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and build-up.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Woodford page. Both are ours to handle.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Woodford

One figure would not be fair here, since this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • The sort of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where the vehicle is.

Tell us your car, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range. For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, is fine too.

Questions we hear about petrol in diesel around Woodford

I'm on a forecourt around Woodford. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this happens. Our technicians attend TotalEnergies and the other forecourts locally routinely, with the site's consent — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It rests on the proportion rather than the litres, and much more on whether the engine has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable much more often than motorists fear.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has diluted isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a distinct fault. So no. That tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to live with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Is your car still with you?

Keep the engine shut off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it after that. Cold and parked, a car is in the best position available — and motorists fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
