Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Woodford? Don't Start It
Do not fire up your engine. While the petrol is still inside your tank and your engine has not yet run, a drain is almost always all it needs — and that gets determined in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, all over Woodford and the remainder of Greater London, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. One call our way is plenty: we will explain what comes next. Try that straight away.
Petrol in a diesel: what to do next
- As you drive, the pump and the injectors wear down. This is why you never start the vehicle, and why you never rely on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel in particular — the point people get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor normally can't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you carry on.
- Flicking the car's ignition on often primes the system, and priming is what carries petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol handles the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition off.
- Don't put diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance presumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it merely leaves you a bigger tank of the same blend. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
- Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that has not shifted is the quickest one to sort out, and our team would much rather get to an awkward place than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Charteris Road, put your hazards on and leave it there.
- Know where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning IG8 0, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of showing up.
- Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what was put in, about how much, plus whether the motor has been started. Those responses settle everything that follows.
Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel
Much of the job begins at a pump, meaning a fair part of it is completed on site. We operate on station forecourts routinely, with the owner's consent, and so if you're still at BP that is generally where this drain happens.
At the forecourt, the mistake gets halted with your engine never run, and nowhere else does that. Our technicians can still put it right where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to go past your tank to your lines and your filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the key are what settle that.
The attendants will generally happily move the vehicle clear of the petrol pump so the next driver can get through. That's worth doing. Cranking it for four vehicle lengths? Never.
The complicated part is that bay, not your fuel. Vehicles either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and now and then a height barrier on the way in that decides if our van can reach you at all — so when you phone from a car park like the one outside Co-op Food, mention how much room there's about you and which way round the car is. Those our engineers attend often. Should there be no room to work beside the diesel BMW 3 Series, it gets moved with your engine off, and not out of fussiness over a couple of seconds of running: priming happens at every start, more of the mixture leaves the tank for the pump, and two shunts into a roomier bay have quietly made a harder job of what was simply a car standing still.
Every restart primes the fuel lines and pulls more petrol past the fuel filter then into your pump. So a misfilled diesel Audi A4 on the zig-zags by Ray Lodge Primary School is a hassle, while the same motor fired up three more times to be polite is a fuel system and not a tank. Someone will advise you to move it out of the gateway and fix it later. Do not. Leave it there, let them moan, and call us.
The pump sits ahead of your injectors, so whatever a wearing one sheds travels onward with the fuel — which is why we're blunt about not driving on. Phone us, and leave your diesel Peugeot 3008 where it's close to Woodford Green Library.
Most of these happen somewhere new, and the cause is mechanical rather than careless — almost no resistance meets a slimmer petrol nozzle entering a modern diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Vauxhall Astra, a fill-up by Clement Attlee that you did not think about? Call us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone spots it, and the further they go, the more petrol arrives at your injectors.
No warning light exists for this, which is why motors in that position normally get driven once more before somebody rings. Don't be one of them. The throttle went limp and the idle turned uneven after a couple of streets, and the diesel Kia Sportage is now sitting by St Barnabas. Sluggishness there means fuel that cannot build pressure correctly instead of a motor giving up. Switch off. Phone us.
Service near Woodford
Those same trips carry us to Woodford Green, Woodford Wells, Woodford Bridge, South Woodford and Chingford Hatch along with Woodford, which is a small village.
Our technicians still come. The places above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of towns in Greater London, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Ring us and check instead of assuming — county lines especially, and wherever your satnav may struggle with.
See our map for the patch covered here. The lot is territory our technicians cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't bring the car anywhere.
Stranded at the kerbside in Woodford
The chance to pull over anywhere sensible doesn't fall to everyone. Set off, then twigged? Landed on the verge beside Snakes Lane West, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That's a normal call here. Not an unusual one.
Safe where you are? Remain beside it. Not fine? Climb out and away from it. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the trouble: start it up to get to somewhere better and the mix goes further into the system with every mile travelled. However tricky the location, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that's much better for the vehicle than pressing on.
A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?
Here is where your M11 comes in — under a mile from Woodford. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.
The next sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. Presume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Say so when you call. What we bring changes.
Where is Woodford?
Woodford is a locality in northeast Greater London, situated approximately 9.8 miles from central London. Woodford sits at an elevation of around 36 metres, characterised by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock. Woodford is close to nearby places such as Woodford Green, Woodford Wells, and Woodford Bridge, and is part of the wider London urban area.
When our technicians get to you around Woodford: what we do
- The replies alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what got in, how much of that, and whether your engine has run.
- The tank gets cleared completely.
- What is left in the fuel system should not be what started the issue, so the lines get purged and the fuel filter cleaned.
- Your system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
- It's started with new diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it's running properly.
That has your car ready to pull away. All of this is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted quickly, permanent damage is very rare.
Woodford AdBlue removal is a separate matter
If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is the same — don't start the vehicle — yet this problem is not. Petrol dilutes the diesel and removes the protection the system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.
AdBlue removal in Woodford has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's usually the more significant of the two. Our engineers cover both.
Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Woodford
One price wouldn't be fair here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that ratio.
- Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?
Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. If it is not urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.
Woodford drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel
I'm on a forecourt around Woodford. Can you drain the vehicle here?
Yes — forecourts are where a good part of this takes place. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear if working there is possible.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that blend sucked through it.
Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?
Stop somewhere safe, switch off, and leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable a lot more commonly than motorists fear.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Your tank still has petrol in it later, and the pump still has to put up with it.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
Wherever the vehicle is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.
Still with the vehicle?
The engine stays off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car later on. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this far more than they need to.
