Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Woodgate Valley

Don't turn on the motor. While the fuel is still inside the tank and the engine has not run, a tank drain is almost always all it takes — and that's determined in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they are, all over Woodgate Valley and the remainder of West Midlands, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. Just one call our way will be sufficient: our engineers shall tell you what comes after this. Do that right away.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

  • While you drive, your pump and your injectors wear down. This is why you never start the vehicle, and why you don't rely on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel especially — the part drivers get wrong — is that it pulls away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine typically can't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Leave your ignition off also. Diesel has two jobs: it burns, and before it ignites it lubricates that high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime that system, which draws the petrol out of the tank then into precisely those parts.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance presumes — so do not tip diesel on top to water down it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A vehicle that hasn't moved is the easiest one to sort, and so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Sommerfield Road? Hazards on, and leave the vehicle there. An odd place works for us better than a started engine.
  • A van turning up instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts B32 3, and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it. Have both prepared before you ring.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three questions — what got in, about how much, and whether your car has been turned over. The replies decide all that happens next.

Nothing about the time since has cost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is idle, and so a diesel Volkswagen Golf sitting outside Selly Oak this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what drew diluted diesel through your pump was the journey in. Call us before you go to collect the car.

Car parks like the one at Asda are a place we work in frequently, and your fuel is hardly ever the awkward part. The bay is: motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height limit on the way in that decides if a technician can access you at all. So tell us how penned in you are when you ring, and which way the car is facing. Where our engineers can't work alongside your diesel Renault Megane we will roll the vehicle without running it — and that's not fuss about a handful of seconds of running. Any start primes your fuel system and sucks more of the mixture out of the tank and on to the pump, so a vehicle shuffled twice into a better spot has quietly turned into a worse job than one left precisely where it stopped.

Pulled off the forecourt, read your receipt, and parked the diesel Kia Sportage up by Jane Bunford a few hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Phone us then leave the car off. The short hop really assists, but it was still a start and a drive, and so weakened fuel has arrived at your filter and the pump — which is why our engineers flush your lines rather than only clearing that tank.

Turn off where you have stopped, and do not restart it to find somewhere better — by Bartley Green Library or anywhere at all. Clattering, a ragged idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a misfuelled diesel Audi Q5 telling you what's wrong.

By this point your tank is not where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, that blend is in the filter, the lines, your pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with the tank contents. A diesel Volvo XC60 that made it by St Boniface Church needs the system purged, not drained.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Woodgate Valley

Can petrol be drained from a diesel on a forecourt?

The job begins at the pump, generally. Often enough the job ends there as well. Still at Esso? Then that is normally where it gets done. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the site.

Before your motor has run — the forecourt is the only spot it ends up stopped. Fuel pulled out of that tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is fired up and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the fuel filter and your lines along with your tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and we sort it out where your car sits. What determines it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the receipt was read.

Push it out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they usually will. The next motorist gets past the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Rolling the car four bays doesn't justify firing it.

Do our technicians reach your end of Woodgate Valley?

As a residential suburb, Woodgate Valley has a steady call, while the villages round about come along on that same run: California and Weoley Castle, Bartley Green and Woodcock Hill, Woodgate.

Our technicians do come. Those names above are only the closest neighbours, and a page is there for most locations around West Midlands, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Call us to check rather than guessing — county lines especially, and wherever the satnav may get wrong.

The map is the ground the page covers. Every bit of that is ground our engineers cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't move the vehicle anywhere.

Roadside breakdowns around Woodgate Valley

Some drivers have no safe place to pull in at all. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up by the verge on Stonehouse Lane, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that is a normal call for us rather than an unusual one.

Wait by the vehicle if it's safe to wait inside, and clear of the vehicle when it isn't. Never start it up to reach a safer spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mixture deeper into the fuel system. Our van coming to a difficult place is no problem for us, and it is far better for your car than driving on.

Run it already? Stop, then read this

Here is where the local M5 comes in — under 3 miles from Woodgate Valley. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power ebbs away, the idle gets rough, and there may be some smoke.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Long trip? Anything approaching the under 5 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the call, because it alters what goes in the van.

Woodgate Valley itself

Woodgate Valley is a suburban area in the West Midlands, situated near the River Rea and close to the city of Birmingham. Woodgate Valley has a mix of terraced housing and local amenities, with nearby places including California, Weoley Castle, and Bartley Green. Woodgate Valley sits at an elevation of 161 metres, approximately 4.4 miles southwest of Birmingham city centre.

What happens when our engineers arrive with you in Woodgate Valley

  • The answers change the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of that, and if your motor has run.
  • Out goes the polluted fuel.
  • We flush the fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, so what is remaining in your system is not what caused the problem.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • It is fired up with clean diesel in it, and our technicians check that it is running correctly.

The car is then ready for you to drive away. Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been spotted quickly, and as everything is done where the car is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Woodgate Valley is a separate job

If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first instruction is the same — never fire it up — yet this issue is not. Petrol weakens the diesel and strips the lubrication your fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and residue in its place.

Both are ours. There's a separate Woodgate Valley page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Woodgate Valley pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Our technicians cannot put one figure on this page honestly, since this job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much that tank can hold.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where the car is, and whether a van can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and whether your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. If it isn't pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Woodgate Valley drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

I'm on a forecourt in Woodgate Valley. Can you drain the vehicle here?

A large part of this work takes place there, so yes. We attend BP and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you if we can work there.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. What determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been drawn through the fuel system — because although five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, then leave the vehicle off. Driving shifts the problem along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly valuable thing left to you is not restarting the car.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly is not a change and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate problem and it does not replace what petrol has weakened. Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. Our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a dealership.

Still with your car?

Turned off is the way it stays.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, switch off, then let the car stay that way. This is recoverable from much more often than people assume, and a still, cold car is the best position to be in.
