Woodhouse: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
With that tank still holding the fuel and the motor not yet run, nearly every job takes only a drain, so leave the motor off. That result is decided in the minutes straight after filling up, rather than by the amount that was put in. Throughout Woodhouse and the remainder of Cumbria, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. A single ring to us is plenty: we will show you what comes from here. Try that first.
What to try next about petrol in a diesel
- Whenever you drive, your pump and your injectors suffer. That's why you do not start it, and why you do not depend on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel specifically — the bit drivers get wrong — is that it drives away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine typically will not run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you keep going.
- Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors protected. Petrol only manages the one. That is why your ignition remains off too — switch it on and you usually prime your system, and that's petrol exiting the tank for exactly those parts.
- Do not pour diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage in the way that advice presumes, and topping up clears nothing — it simply gives you a larger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
- Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A car that has never shifted is the quickest one to handle, and our team would rather drive to a difficult location than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Woodhouse Road, turn those hazards on and keep the vehicle there.
- Before you phone, work out your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning CA28 9 — that is what settles whether our van arrives or circles.
- What went in, roughly how many litres, plus whether the motor has fired — these three replies shape the entire call-out. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.
Do not take it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through that injection pump in real volume on the way in, and the trip back would close to double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is okay. There is no need to stand over that Volkswagen Golf at Corkickle whilst the work goes on, and our team would much rather hear from you tonight than realise on Monday.
You drive off at the end, once we have started the car and made sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel, with the fuel system primed. Before that, in the car park by Kells Royal British Legion, the contaminated fuel comes out of that tank, the lines get rinsed and the fuel filter comes off where your Audi A6 has a replaceable one. It all begins with three questions when our technicians get to the vehicle: what went in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.
A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not only burn. Dilute that fuel and pressure which should build and stay built escapes past gaps instead, leaving the engine a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was designed about. Petrol weakens diesel, and diesel has to be thick enough to seal the tightly fitted parts it flows through — that's the whole mechanism. It explains the normal Woodhouse (Millennium Green) call too: a diesel Citroen C3 that travelled out without a murmur and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, perhaps smoking a little. None of which is your engine failing, and that is the bit worth hearing. The fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put the fuel right and it stops.
Calling from close to St Peters Parish Community Hall? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the vehicle it is on. Room for a van beside you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The location itself barely counts: on-street is where we work most, and we'd much rather have a tight spot than a vehicle somebody has driven somewhere quicker. Then it's a drain for the Renault Captur, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines rinsed, clean fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of that is in your lines and not that tank.
No warning exists for this, which is why motors in that position typically get driven again before somebody calls. Do not be one of them. The throttle went limp and the idle turned uneven after a couple of streets, and your diesel Seat Leon is now sitting close to Woodbank Evangelical Church. Softness there means fuel that can't build pressure correctly rather than an engine packing up. Switch off. Ring us.
Can petrol be taken from a diesel on a forecourt?
A large portion of this work is done at a forecourt, because that's where it mostly begins. The drain typically takes place on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the owner's agreement, that's a place we work, and often.
At the forecourt, this is halted with the engine never fired, and nowhere else does it. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and our engineers can still deal with it where it is. It does mean the lines and the filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the key.
Out from the pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you move the car. Very much worth doing. Firing the car to move four vehicle lengths isn't.
Woodhouse plus the places near it
As a residential suburb, Woodhouse gets a steady visit, whilst the areas nearby come along on the same run: Kells and Greenbank, Sandwith and Mirehouse West, Arrowthwaite.
Not on that list? That says nothing. The names above are just the closest few, and most towns across Cumbria have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. On the border, or somewhere your satnav struggles with? Contact us and check rather than guessing.
The patch the page covers sits on our map. All of that is ground our engineers work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never move your car anywhere.
Kerbside call-outs across Woodhouse
Some drivers have no suitable place to pull over whatsoever. Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Buttermere Avenue because you noticed after setting off — we take that call often enough that it is the ordinary kind.
Sit with your car if it is sensible to wait inside, and out of the vehicle if it is not. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the problem: fire it up to reach somewhere better and that mix goes further into the system with every mile driven. We'll take our van to an awkward location without any bother, and for the vehicle that is much better than pressing on.
Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has travelled
Here is where the M6 matters, under 50 miles from Woodhouse. A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are typically a drop in power, a lumpy idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.
Never restart it to reposition. Pull off at the next safe exit then turn off. Long run? Anything approaching the under 50 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the phone, as it changes what goes in the van.
Where is Woodhouse?
Woodhouse is a suburban area in Cumbria, situated near the coast and approximately 36 miles from Carlisle. Woodhouse has a population of around 2543 people and is characterised by semi-detached housing. Woodhouse sits at an elevation of 96 metres, overlooking the surrounding landscape. Woodhouse is close to nearby places such as Kells, Greenbank, and Sandwith.
Once we reach you in Woodhouse: what happens
- We ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those responses alter what the work actually is.
- Out goes the polluted fuel.
- Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever is left later isn't the thing that started the issue.
- Our engineers pour new diesel in and prime the system.
- The engine is started and tested to be sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.
From that point, you're ready to pull away. All of this is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted quickly, permanent damage is very rare.
AdBlue in a diesel tank around Woodhouse is a distinct problem
If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening instruction is unchanged — never fire it up — yet this fault is not. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol. Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.
AdBlue removal around Woodhouse has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is usually the more serious of the two. We deal with both.
Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Woodhouse
We can't put one figure on this page frankly, because the job is not one job. What shifts it:
- Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
- The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
- Whether our van can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your car is.
Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and whether your motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not time-critical, is fine too.
Woodhouse drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel
Fuel drains on a Woodhouse petrol station forecourt
Plenty of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes. Often, provided the site agrees: Morrisons, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something our technicians answer straight away.
Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?
Proportion decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through the system.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it
Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable a lot more frequently than drivers fear.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the car turned off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
What petrol has diluted is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different issue. So no. Your pump still has to put up with it, as the tank still has petrol in it after that.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?
Wherever the vehicle is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.
Is your vehicle still with you?
Shut off is the way it stays.
If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere safe, switch it off and leave it off. A stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than motorists expect.
