Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Woodhouse Hill?

With your tank still holding the petrol and the engine not yet started, almost every job takes only a drain, so leave the engine off. That result is decided in the minutes right after filling up, rather than by the amount that went in. All over Woodhouse Hill and the remainder of West Yorkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Call us before everything else begins, so you will learn what happens after that.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

  • Do not fire it up. Fired up anyway? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol car normally cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off happily, for a few miles. Motorists get that reversed. It is not all right — your fuel system is grinding every mile you cover.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it greases — the injection pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition alone as well: turning it on is often sufficient to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from that tank into just those components.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It will not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • A vehicle that has not shifted is the easiest one to sort, and so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Parnaby Road? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. An odd location suits us better than a started motor.
  • Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning LS10 3, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of turning up.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Say what got in, roughly how many litres, and whether the motor has started. These three details decide the whole visit.

The high-pressure pump did that morning drive running on a fluid that had given up a lot of the protection it is designed around. Diesel protects that pump, and the fuel injectors with it, before any of the fuel ignites; petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. So picture a diesel Renault Megane, fuelled at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and parked standing outside Leeds until you realise at about eleven. Three hours of standing have altered nothing about it. The few miles before that changed a good deal, which is why the thing our technicians put to you is about miles rather than time. Ring us. Leave it right where it sits.

Nothing tells you, because from behind the wheel there's nothing to be warned about. The diesel Nissan Qashqai will have felt completely normal on the way back from Hunslet Carr Primary School, and they all do — which is the catch with petrol in a diesel rather than the reverse. Diesel in a petrol motor generally refuses to run, stopping the motorist and stopping the wear with them. Petrol in a diesel starts, ticks over, moves off as though nothing had happened, and all the while your pump keeps working without the lubrication its fuel is supposed to supply. Tell us about how far, and how hard. The harder counts more.

The parts that should be getting lubricated are wearing instead, and your vehicle gives no sign of that: a diesel on a weakened tank starts and drives off just fine. Risk the journey home from Parnaby Tavern? Don't. Ring us then leave the Mercedes C-Class where it stands.

Leave the Peugeot 208 by John Scott and phone us. We are blunt about not driving on because a wearing pump gives off, and what it sheds passes onward with the fuel to the fuel injectors beyond it.

A throttle gone soft, white smoke, a ragged idle, knocking: that's a misfuelled diesel Citroen C3 telling you what is wrong. Don't restart the car to find a better spot — turn off where you have stopped, by Woodhouse Hill Community Centre or anywhere else.

Draining petrol from the diesel at the forecourt

Most of the work starts at a forecourt, meaning a good part of that gets finished on site. Still at Shell? Then that's generally where it gets done. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the station.

No place except the forecourt can it be spotted with your engine still unstarted. We can still put it right where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been started and moved there, and that sucked fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure pump, right from that tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to go past your tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the key are what decide that.

Away from the pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the staff help you roll the car. Worth doing. Cranking the car over four vehicle lengths? Never.

Parts our team serve near Woodhouse Hill

Woodhouse Hill is a residential suburb, so our vans get out to the town and to the villages by it on the same journeys: Hunslet Carr, Thwaite Gate, Stourton, Atkinson Hill and Hunslet.

Not on this list? It tells you nothing. The places above are just the nearest few, and nearly all locations in West Yorkshire have a page of their own somewhere on the site. Near the boundary, or anywhere a satnav can't find? Phone to enquire rather than assuming.

The ground the page covers sits on this map. We operate roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of that, and the vehicle never needs to come to us.

Kerbside breakdowns around Woodhouse Hill

Not everyone has a safe spot to stop. A normal call for us and not an unusual one: realised after setting off, ended up on the verge on Middleton Road or at a lay-by with your hazards on.

Out of the car while it's not wise to be in it, by it when it is. Do not fire it up to get to a safer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mixture deeper into the system. We will take our van to a tricky location without any trouble, and for your car that's a lot better than driving on.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

This is where the local M621 matters, under a mile away from Woodhouse Hill. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. Long run? Anything approaching the under 3 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the petrol. Say that on the phone, as it changes what goes in the van.

The call-out around Woodhouse Hill, step by step

  • Our engineers find out what got in, how much, and if your motor has run. The replies change the work, which is why we ask before pricing.
  • The tank is emptied of everything.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever remains later on is not the thing that started the issue.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • Your engine is started and tested to be sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

From there, you are ready to drive away. All of it is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted quickly, long-term damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Woodhouse Hill?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your engine stays off — whereas this issue beneath it's a separate one altogether. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and deposits in its place.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Woodhouse Hill page. Both are ours to deal with.

Woodhouse Hill costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Our engineers cannot put one price on this page truthfully, as the job is not one job. What moves it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that proportion.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there sensibly?

Tell us your vehicle, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a clear answer rather than a range. Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Petrol in diesel: common queries around Woodhouse Hill

I am on a forecourt in Woodhouse Hill. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this takes place. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the site's permission our technicians attend BP and the other forecourts locally routinely.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been sucked right through, or has it not?

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what moves the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it is recoverable a lot more regularly than drivers expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave it turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Shut off is how it remains.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, turn off, then let the car stay that way. This is recoverable from much more often than motorists expect, and a stationary, cold car is the best place to be in.

Emptying misfilled cars, Woodhouse Hill and the rest of West Yorkshire, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
