Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Woodhouse?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Woodhouse and the remainder of Leicestershire. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. While the motor has not yet been started and the fuel is still sitting in that tank, a drain is nearly always all it needs, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much went in. Our technicians will explain what your next stage will be. Contact us — this happens before anything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

  • Never start the vehicle. Started all the same? Then don't rely on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle generally can't run, so the driver stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off normally, for a few miles. Drivers get that backwards. It is not okay — the fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
  • Leave the ignition alone too. Diesel has two jobs: it ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates your injection pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Turning the ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime your system, which pulls this petrol out of your tank and into just those components.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It will not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a larger tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • We would rather travel to an odd place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to sort out than a car that has never moved. On the verge on Forest Road, that means hazards on then keep it.
  • A van arriving rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode that starts LE12 8, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Keep both prepared before you dial.
  • Three facts decide the full call-out: the fuel you put in, the ballpark amount of it, plus if anything has been running since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Quarter past eight. A hurried top-up on the drive in. At about eleven it occurs to you, and by then your diesel Volkswagen Golf has stood at Barrow Upon Soar for three hours. Phone then leave it where it stands. What matters is the drive in, since diesel both burns and — before that — lubricates the pump and the fuel injectors, but petrol only ever ignites. Those couple of miles worked the pump on a liquid stripped of most of its protection, and no quantity of sitting in a car park gives any of that back. Hence the thing we ask about distance rather than hours sitting, and hence the instruction to leave your keys alone until our engineers arrive.

Every start primes your fuel system and sucks more of that blend out of that tank and towards your pump — which is why a motor shunted twice into a nicer bay has silently grown into a bigger job than one left just where it stopped. So where our engineers can't work beside your diesel Renault Clio, we move it without firing it. None of that is fuss about a couple of seconds of running. Car parks like the one outside Spar our engineers attend frequently, and the fuel is hardly ever the complicated part: the bay is. Motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, occasionally a height barrier at the entrance settling whether a van reaches you at all. Tell us how boxed in you are, and which way your car faces.

None of it is the engine failing. That is the part worth hearing, and it is why the ordinary MOD Garats Hay Sports pitches call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Mercedes E-Class drives out there without fuss, comes back with the power gone, your idle uneven and perhaps a little smoke, and the cause is the fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the close-fitting components it flows through; petrol thins it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure and not only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built leaks past gaps, delivery shows up weaker and later and less even than designed, and all of that stops once your fuel is sorted.

A car you collected two days ago gets driven further before anybody spots anything, which is the hire and courtesy problem in one sentence — and how far it went is what determines the volume of petrol reaching the fuel injectors. Nothing careless about the mistake itself: a modern diesel filler neck takes the narrower petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, and so unfamiliar places see most of these. Call us from wherever you are, by St Mary-in-the-Elms or not, and we will come to the Peugeot 208.

Fixed and starting aren't the same thing, and the difference is the system: our engineers flush it, and take the filter off where there's a workable one. Compare that with the sure of themselves advice you will get — drain the vehicle, refill with fresh diesel. Only half right. Do exactly that to a diesel Citroen C3 by Woodhouse Eaves Evangelical Baptist Church and it'll start, which is precisely why the suggestion sounds sensible. Then your engine draws the petrol left behind in the filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, as emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead.

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

A large part of the job gets completed at a forecourt, since that is where it usually starts. We work on station forecourts all the time, with the station's permission, and so if you are still at Tesco Extra that is usually where this drain gets done.

Nowhere else but a forecourt can the mistake be caught with your engine still unrun. The few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the keys decide how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter require flushing as well as the tank. It's not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where the car is.

Attendants will usually pitch in pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Welcome the assistance. Moving the car four bays doesn't warrant cranking the engine.

Woodhouse plus the villages near it

Woodhouse is a rural village, so our vans are out to the town and to anywhere near it on those same rounds: Woodhouse Eaves, The Brand, Woodthorpe, Swithland and Quorndon.

Not on that list? That says nothing. The places above are only the closest few, and nearly all places around Leicestershire have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Close to the boundary, or anywhere a satnav struggles with? Contact us and ask instead of guessing.

This map shows the patch the page includes. We operate roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of that, and the car never needs to come to us.

Roadside stops across Woodhouse

A chance to pull in anywhere sensible does not come to everyone. Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside Home Farm Close as you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it is the normal kind.

Fine where you are? Stay with it. Not okay? Get out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mixture further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier. A technician driving to an awkward spot is no bother for us, and it is a lot better for your car than carrying on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

This is where your M1 counts, under 5 miles away from Woodhouse. Lost power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, rather than a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. On a longer drive — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you phone. It affects what our engineers bring.

Woodhouse itself

Woodhouse is a small village in Leicestershire, situated approximately 7 miles east of Leicester. Woodhouse sits in a rural area at an elevation of around 84 metres, with nearby villages including Woodhouse Eaves and The Brand. Woodhouse has a population of around 608 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Woodhouse is located in the East Midlands region, about 96 miles north of London.

What our engineers do when we get to you around Woodhouse

  • Our technicians ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers shape what the work actually is.
  • Out comes the contaminated mixture.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that created any of this.
  • The system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • After it's turned on, our technicians confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

From that point, you are ready to pull away. Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been caught soon, and because everything is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Woodhouse is a different problem

The fault is not the same, though the first rule is — never crank it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol dilutes the diesel and strips the lubrication the fuel system depends on. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Woodhouse page. Both are ours to deal with.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Woodhouse?

Truthfully, no single number fits on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what changes it:

  • This is the main one: whether your motor has been started, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there safely?

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you'll get a firm answer rather than a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.

Petrol in diesel questions from Woodhouse motorists

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Woodhouse?

Plenty of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. We attend Texaco and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you if we can work there.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mixture drawn through it.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable much more commonly than people expect.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a different fault from a bygone era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind replaces. The pump still has to cope with it, because that tank still has petrol in it later on.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

Waiting next to it?

Keep it switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car after that. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.
