Petrol in a Diesel Car in Woodlands

With the tank still carrying the petrol and your engine not yet turned over, almost every job takes only a drain, so leave your engine off. That result is settled in the minutes straight after filling up, and not by the amount that was put in. Across Woodlands and the rest of Greater Manchester, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt. Call us and then we shall tell you what happens next before you do much else.

The next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine enough for a couple of miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't start the vehicle. And having started, don't rely on it: that fuel system is grinding as you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors greased. Petrol only handles the one. That is why your ignition stays off as well — turn it on and you usually prime that system, and that is petrol leaving the tank for precisely those components.
  • That advice supposes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It won't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • We'd rather drive to a tricky location than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is quicker to handle than a motor that has not moved. On the verge on Hereford Way, that means hazards on and keep the car.
  • Have your whereabouts ready before you call. A postcode beginning SK15 2 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van turning up and the van circling.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Say what got in, approximately how many litres, and also whether the motor has fired. These three replies settle the full visit.

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

The work begins at a forecourt, mostly. Quite often it ends at one too. If you are still on the forecourt at Texaco, that is normally where this drain takes place — we work on garage forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement.

The forecourt is the single setting this is halted before your motor has fired. Our technicians can still deal with it where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been switched on and moved there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, though the flush then has to go past your tank to the lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for your key are what settle that.

Roll it out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they generally will. The next customer gets through the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Starting the car just to move four vehicle lengths isn't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Woodlands

Petrol in the Renault Clio, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you outside Tesco, somewhere around Woodlands? Then phone, and leave the motor out of that — not even to exit the space. Someone comes out to you. Tank drained, fuel lines cleaned, new diesel in, and home you go. Easy throttle over a mile pulls very little, so these tend to be the straightforward jobs.

Every restart primes your lines and drags more petrol past the fuel filter then into your pump. So a misfilled diesel Skoda Octavia on the zig-zags at Stalyhill Junior School is a nuisance, whereas the same car fired up three more times to be polite is a fuel system and not a tank. A passer-by will tell you to shift the car out of that gateway and deal with it later. Do not. Leave it there, let them grumble, and ring us.

Park it there overnight. Phone next morning. Nothing about a diesel Peugeot 308 sitting in the parking area outside Waggon and Horses worsens whilst it sits, tank of petrol or not, and this job stays a simple one right up until the moment it gets driven home. The question we bring is about the run there: a cold engine over a short distance is where petrol ignites least well, and whatever fails to burn can work its way past the rings into the oil.

About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Dacia Duster parked by Bower Fold barely two streets on. Ring us, then leave it off. A short drive does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the fuel filter and your pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence flushing the lines instead of only clearing your tank.

Petrol in a diesel does its damage as a ratio, which is the reason our technicians ask at all: the same few litres sitting in an almost empty tank make a far stronger mixture than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger blend rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Nearly no one knows how full that tank was in a vehicle collected two days ago, and we work that out on the spot. Do phone the hire or company firm first, though: some agreements want them to approve the work, and that is far quicker settled before than after. Then phone us about the Mercedes E-Class close to St Peter's RC Church.

Parts our vans serve near Woodlands

As a residential suburb, Woodlands gets a steady visit, while the villages round about come along on the same journey: Mottram Rise and Bower Fold, Fern Bank and Matley, Copley.

There are separate pages for most locations around Greater Manchester, and the ones mentioned above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off this list tells you nothing about if our engineers come. Guessing is the mistake to avoid, especially on a boundary or anywhere your phone goes wrong. Ring us and enquire.

Look at this map for the ground shown on this page. Your car doesn't need to travel to us. We operate throughout the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stopped at the kerbside somewhere around Woodlands?

Not everybody gets the chance to stop somewhere suitable. Set off, then noticed? Landed along the verge beside Linden Road, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That's a routine call here. Not an odd one.

Wait beside the car when it is safe to be there, and out of the vehicle when it's not. Never fire it up to get to a nicer location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that mix deeper into your fuel system. We will send our van to a difficult location without any fuss, and for the vehicle that's far better than pressing on.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

This is where the local M67 counts, under 3 miles from Woodlands. A drop in power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

The first sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Long trip? Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the phone, since it alters what goes in the van.

Where is Woodlands?

Woodlands is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated near the River Mersey and overlooking the surrounding countryside from an elevation of 228 metres. Woodlands is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock and is located approximately 8.7 miles from Manchester city centre. Woodlands forms part of a larger residential area that includes nearby Mottram Rise, Bower Fold, and Fern Bank. Woodlands has a population of around 2631 residents.

What our engineers do when our engineers arrive with you around Woodlands

  • Our technicians establish what went in, how much, and if the engine has run. The responses shape the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.
  • Away comes the contaminated fuel.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.
  • The fuel system gets primed, on clean diesel.
  • The engine is started and checked to make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

That has the car ready to drive away. Lasting damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed early, and as everything is done where the vehicle is, it never has to go to a workshop.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Woodlands?

The fault is not the same, though the opening step is — do not fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and deposits in its place.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Woodlands page. Both are ours to deal with.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Woodlands

Our technicians cannot put one price on this page honestly, as the job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • This is the big one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and whether our van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and if your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel: frequent questions around Woodlands

At a petrol station around Woodlands, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Tesco is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there is possible.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your engine has run matters a lot more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres. What determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through the fuel system — because even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. Now what?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of your tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable far more frequently than motorists fear.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly is not a modification and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different issue and it does not replace what petrol has thinned. Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Waiting next to it?

Don't turn your engine on again.

Switch it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and parked, a motor is in the best place available — and people fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
