Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Woodley?

If you have not started the engine yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a motor requires while the fuel is still inside the tank and the engine has not yet turned over, which is why it's the next few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has come to rest in Woodley or the remainder of Berkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there. Call us before anything else happens, so you'll see what follows after that.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Do not crank it — and don't believe it when it runs. Here is the part people have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine filled with diesel typically just won't run, and so the person stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel given petrol generally starts, idles and drives away without complaint for a few miles. It isn't all right. It's wearing that fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Flicking the ignition on frequently primes your system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of the tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition alone.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It does not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Stay put if it's wise to. Hazards on, motor off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Crockhamwell Road, anywhere — a tricky place for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a motor that never moved.
  • Have your whereabouts ready before you phone. A postcode starting RG5 3 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between the van showing up and our van circling.
  • What went in, approximately how much, plus if the car has started — those three details settle the entire job. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Can petrol be taken from a diesel on a forecourt?

Plenty of the job starts at the pump, meaning a big share of that gets completed on site. Still at BP? Then that's typically where it takes place. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the owner.

Before the motor has started — the forecourt is the single place it gets stopped. The few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the keys determine how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter require cleaning as well as that tank. It's not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where the car stands.

Push the vehicle out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they normally will. The next customer gets by the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Firing it to roll four vehicle lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Woodley

Coverage near Woodley

Woodley Green, Sonning, The Parade, Earley, Whiteknights — all of them on our journeys that bring us out to Woodley as well, a town.

Not on that list? It says nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and most locations across Berkshire have a page of their own somewhere on the site. Call us to enquire rather than guessing, especially if you are on a border or somewhere your satnav misreads.

The map is the ground this page spans. Our technicians work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of that, and the car never needs to travel to us.

A diesel pump meters fuel on demand, and a hurried morning dash asks for plenty — so three miles in your BMW 3 Series feels like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine outside Beechwood Primary School, running late, a receipt in your hand showing unleaded: hazards on, ignition off, call us.

Pull over somewhere safe, turn off and call us. Happy on the way out to Woodford Park, flat on the way back? Then look at the tank. Petrol dilutes diesel; runnier fuel slips past the tightly fitted parts that build injection pressure; and the further the diesel Ford Focus travelled, the less of that pressure it held.

Your pump waits ahead of your injectors, and so whatever a wearing one sheds passes on with your fuel — which is why we're direct about not driving on. Call us, then leave your diesel Mercedes C-Class where it is by Woodley Theatre.

A car you picked up two days ago gets driven further before anybody notices anything, which is the hire and courtesy issue in one sentence — and how far it went is what decides the volume of petrol arriving at the fuel injectors. Nothing careless about the mistake itself: a current diesel filler neck accepts the smaller petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, so unfamiliar places see most of these. Ring us from wherever you are, by Woodley Library or not, and we'll come to the Audi A3.

That deadness is your fuel failing to build pressure correctly, not the motor packing up — and with no dashboard light for it, vehicles in that position normally get driven a second time before anybody calls. Do not. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone limp, idle turned uneven, and a diesel Vauxhall Astra now sitting by Woodley War Memorial. Turn it off and ring us.

Roadside breakdowns across Woodley

A chance to pull over somewhere safe doesn't come to everyone. If you worked it out after setting off and landed on the verge of Headley Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights flashing, that's a common call for us and not an odd one.

Fine where you are? Stay beside it. Not okay? Get out and clear of it. Don't fire it up to reach a nicer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mix deeper into the system. Our van driving to a tricky location is no bother for us, and it's much better for the vehicle than pressing on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Your A329(M) is the road which matters now, and lies under 3 miles from Woodley. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The next sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Long trip? Anything close to the under 50 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the petrol. Say that on the call, as it alters what goes in the van.

A little about Woodley

Woodley is a town in Berkshire, situated inland at an elevation of around 55 metres, approximately 33.7 miles west of London. Woodley lies near the villages of Woodley Green and Sonning, and is connected to the nearby town of Reading by The Parade. Woodley has a population of around 26503 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing.

What follows when our technicians arrive with you in Woodley

  • We establish what was put in, how much, and if the motor has run. The replies shape the work, which is why we ask before quoting.
  • Our engineers clear that tank of all the contaminated fuel.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever remains after that isn't the thing that started the issue.
  • The fuel system gets bled, on clean diesel.
  • It's fired up with fresh diesel in it, and we make sure that it is running correctly.

That has the car ready to pull away. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been caught quickly, and since all of it is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

Woodley AdBlue removal is a separate job

The fault is not the same, though the opening step is — don't start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol thins the diesel and takes away the protection the fuel system relies on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Woodley page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Woodley costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What changes the price is set out below, because the job isn't one job and we cannot frankly put a single price on this page.

  • Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much that tank takes.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for a technician.

Tell us the car, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a straight answer instead of a range. If it is not urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: everyday questions around Woodley

At a petrol station around Woodley, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it's where a good part of this work takes place. We visit Shell and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It rests on the ratio rather than the litres, and much more on whether the engine has run. What decides how much work is required is if that mix has been pulled through the system — because though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of the tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable a lot more often than drivers expect.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a change and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate problem and it does not restore what petrol has weakened. Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Waiting next to it?

The engine remains off.

Switch it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Drivers fear this a lot more than they need to.
