Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Woodley? Don't Start It
If you have not turned on the motor as yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a vehicle needs while the petrol is still inside that tank and the motor has not yet run, which is why it's the coming few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to your car wherever it has come to rest in Woodley or the rest of Hampshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there. Ring us and we will show you what follows after that before you do any more.
What to try now about petrol in a diesel
- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will normally not run at all, so the person stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it drives off — all right for a couple of miles. Motorists have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't crank it. And having started, don't trust it: the fuel system is wearing as you drive.
- Leave the ignition alone as well. Diesel performs two jobs: it combusts, and before it burns it protects that high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Turning the ignition on is usually enough to prime your system, which moves this petrol out of that tank then into exactly those parts.
- Don't water down it. Diesel put on top removes nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The grade makes no difference.
- We'd sooner drive to a difficult location than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is easier to sort than a car that has never shifted. On the verge on Short Hill, that means hazards on then keep the car.
- Before you phone, get your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting SO51 7 — that's what decides whether the technician shows up or circles.
- What went in, roughly how many litres, and whether the car has started — those three details determine the whole call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.
Do not run it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has run through your injection pump in real quantity on the drive in, and the trip back would more or less double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is good. There's no need to stand over your Volkswagen Passat outside Romsey while the work happens, and our team would much rather talk to you tonight than discover on Monday.
Each restart primes the fuel lines and pulls more petrol past your filter then into your pump. So a misfilled diesel Skoda Octavia on the zig-zags outside Cupernham Junior School is a hassle, whereas the same vehicle fired up three more times to be courteous is a fuel system and not a tank. Somebody will urge you to shift the vehicle out of that gateway and deal with it later. Don't. Stay put, let them moan, and phone us.
Three replies settle much of the work: what got in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for those answers when we reach the car in the car park outside The Hunters Inn. Then the tainted blend comes out of the tank, the lines are rinsed, and where your BMW 3 Series has a serviceable filter, it comes off. Once clean diesel is in and the fuel system primed, our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly before you set off.
Calling from close to Woodley Village Hall? Three things help us. The filler — which side of your car it's on. Room for a technician alongside you, without the road being blocked. And whether anything has run since the fill-up. The location itself barely matters: on-street is where our technicians work most, and we would much rather have a narrow bay than a motor someone has driven somewhere simpler. Then it's a drain for the Ford Focus, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines rinsed, fresh fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of it is in the lines and not that tank.
Clattering? Uneven idle? White smoke, throttle gone soft? That is your misfilled Mercedes E-Class, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, maybe close to Pond Cottage, then leave the restarting alone.
At the forecourt: removing petrol from the diesel
A good part of the job gets completed at the pump, since that is where it usually starts. Still at Murco? Then that's typically where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the owner.
No place other than a forecourt can this be halted with the engine still unrun. We can still put it right where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and moved there, and that drew fuel through your filter and into your high-pressure pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to go past your tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for your key are what settle that.
The staff will generally offer to roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get by. That's worth doing. Cranking the car for four vehicle lengths? Never.
Can we cover your side of Woodley?
Woodley is a residential suburb, so our technicians go out to it and to the areas by it on those same runs: Harefield, Crampmoor, Cupernham, Halterworth and Abbotswood.
If yours is not on this list it does not mean we don't come — there are separate pages for the majority of towns in Hampshire, and the ones listed above are just the nearest neighbours. Guessing is the mistake to resist, especially on the boundary or somewhere the satnav struggles. Ring us and ask.
The map marks the patch the page covers. Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: the lot is ground we work on, and none of that asks your vehicle to travel to us.
Kerbside call-outs across Woodley
Not everybody has a chance to stop somewhere sensible. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up along the verge beside The Green, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that's a normal call for us rather than an odd one.
Fine right there? Remain by it. Not okay? Move out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mix further into the fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. We will send the van to a tricky location without any fuss, and for the vehicle that is much better than pressing on.
So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles
This is where the local M27 comes in — under 5 miles from Woodley. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.
The first safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Assume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you phone. What our technicians bring alters.

Once our technicians reach you around Woodley: what happens
- The replies alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what went in, how much of it, and whether your motor has run.
- Away goes the contaminated fuel.
- What is remaining in the fuel system shouldn't be what started the problem, so your fuel lines get cleaned and your filter cleaned.
- Bleeding your system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
- The engine is fired up and checked to be sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.
The car is then ready for you to pull away. Our technicians do all of this wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and if it has been caught quickly, it's very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.
Woodley AdBlue removal is a distinct problem
Do not fire it up: that first rule holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the problem itself. Petrol thins your diesel and strips the protection the system depends on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and deposits instead.
Both are ours. There is a separate Woodley page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.
What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Woodley
Frankly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. This job differs. Here's what changes it:
- This is the big one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
- Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a technician.
Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and whether your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.
Petrol in diesel: everyday questions around Woodley
I'm on a forecourt in Woodley. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?
A fair portion of this work happens there, so yes. Our technicians visit BP and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the site's consent — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you if we can work there.
A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Whether the motor has run matters much more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is whether that mixture has been drawn through your fuel system.
Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?
Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. It is recoverable much more frequently than motorists fear, even though driving is what shifts the issue from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave it turned off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
No. It belongs to a separate fault from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. Later? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
No. We drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.
Still with your vehicle?
Don't switch the engine back on.
If you have already driven the vehicle, stop somewhere sensible, switch it off then leave it off. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.
Across Hampshire and in Woodley: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
