Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Woodside

Don't fire up the motor. If the fuel is still in that tank and your engine has not turned over, a drain is nearly always all it needs — and that is decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, across Woodside and the rest of Fife, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. Our engineers can show you what the following part is. Phone — it happens before all else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • Never fire it up — and never depend on it if it starts. That is the thing most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor given diesel usually just can't run, and so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, ticks over and moves off just fine for several miles. It isn't okay. It's eating into your fuel system while you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the ignition remains off too — turn it on and you usually prime that system, and that's petrol leaving your tank for exactly those parts.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It gives you a larger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage in the way that guidance suggests — so do not pour diesel on top to water down it. Octane is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay still if it's sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Carseggie Crescent, anywhere — a difficult location for us trumps a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to handle than a vehicle that never shifted.
  • Check where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts KY7 5, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of arriving.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three questions — what was put in, approximately how much, plus whether the engine has been run. Your responses settle whatever happens next.

Quarter past eight. A fast fill-up on the road in. At about eleven it dawns on you, and by then your diesel Volkswagen Passat has stood outside Markinch for three hours. Ring us then keep the car where it stands. What is key is the run in, because diesel both ignites and — before that — greases your pump and the injectors, while petrol only ever burns. Those couple of miles ran your pump on a fuel drained of a lot of its protection, and no quantity of standing in a car park puts any of that back. Hence the question about miles instead of hours sitting, and hence the instruction to leave the keys alone till our engineers get there.

Risk the drive home from Otter's Head? Don't. It will fire up and it will move off just fine, which is the issue — a diesel on a thinned tank acts normally while grinding the parts your fuel should be lubricating. Leave the Audi A3 then phone.

Here's the whole process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the fine tolerances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which explains the usual Carleton Park call — a diesel BMW 1 Series, out there without fuss and back down on power, uneven at idle, maybe a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; thinned, it bleeds past those clearances and not building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than the engine was engineered around. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

Emptying your Citroen C3, changing your filter where there's a workable one, cleaning your lines, putting fresh fuel through the entire system: that's the job, and it is shaped by the worst of it waiting in the fuel lines instead of in that tank by this point. Three things help when you ring from close to Woodside Community Centre — which side the filler is on, whether our van can park beside without blocking the road, and if the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the commonest spot our engineers work, and so the spot itself is hardly ever the issue. A narrow parking space trumps a vehicle driven somewhere more handy.

Turn off where you have stopped, and never start it to find somewhere better — close to The Lomond Centre or anywhere at all. Knocking, an uneven idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a misfuelled diesel Kia Sportage telling you what is wrong.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Woodside

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

A good portion of this job gets done at the pump, since that is where it mostly starts. Still at BP? Then that's usually where it takes place. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the site.

Before the motor has fired — a garage is the only spot this ends up spotted. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and our engineers can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and the filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for your key.

Roll it out of the way if the staff offer, and they normally will. The next customer gets by the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Rolling it four lengths does not merit cranking the motor.

Coverage in Woodside

Alburne Park, Eastfield, Auchmuty, Queensway, Mount Frost — every one of those on our journeys that carry us across to Woodside itself, a residential suburb.

Not on that list? That says nothing. The names above are simply the nearest few, and the majority of locations across Fife have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Phone and enquire instead of assuming, particularly when you're on the boundary or anywhere your satnav can't find.

Use the map for the patch shown on this page. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: the lot is ground our engineers work on, and none of it asks your vehicle to travel to us.

Roadside stops across Woodside

Not everybody gets a decent place to stop. If you worked it out after setting off and finished up on the verge of The Beeches, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that is a common call for us rather than a rare one.

Clear of the motor while it is not wise to be inside, by it if it is. Do not start it up to reach a better location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that mixture deeper into the fuel system. Carrying on does your car far more harm than a van heading out to an awkward location, and that is no bother for us.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

The M90 is the one which counts now, and it sits under 10 miles from Woodside. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power drains away, your idle gets uneven, and there may be some smoke.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. On a longer run — anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors, and tell us when you ring. It alters what our engineers bring.

Woodside itself

Woodside is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Fife, with a mix of terraced housing and local amenities. Woodside has a population of around 3545 people and is located near other residential areas such as Alburne Park and Eastfield. Woodside sits at an elevation of 76 metres, overlooking the surrounding countryside. Woodside is approximately 14.7 miles from the city of Dunfermline, providing access to larger urban facilities.

Once our technicians reach you around Woodside: what we do

  • Our engineers establish what got in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The responses change the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.
  • Our engineers empty your tank of the contaminated mixture.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.
  • It is run with clean diesel in it, and our technicians confirm that it's running properly.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. Permanent damage is very rare when it has been spotted soon, and because all of it is done where your car is, it never has to go to a workshop.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Woodside is a different matter

The issue isn't the same, though the opening rule is — do not crank it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the lubrication the system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and residue instead.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Woodside page. Both are ours to deal with.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Woodside

Our engineers cannot put one figure on this page honestly, because the job isn't one job. What moves it:

  • This is the key one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much that tank takes.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and if our van can safely get to and work on it.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range. If it's not urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel: frequent queries in Woodside

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Woodside?

Plenty of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the site's consent our engineers visit Morrisons and the other forecourts around town all the time.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether your engine has run. What settles how much work is required is whether that mix has been pulled through the system — since though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, then keep the vehicle off. It is salvageable a lot more often than people assume, even though driving is what moves the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

What petrol has thinned isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a distinct issue. So no. Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Standing next to it?

Leave it turned off.

Turn it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. A still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more regularly than motorists assume.
