Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Woodside? Don't Start It
Never turn on your engine. While the fuel is still in the tank and the motor has not yet been started, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes — and that's settled in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they are, across Woodside and the rest of Shropshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Call us and then we shall tell you what happens next before you try anything else.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try first
- Do not start the car — and don't believe it when it does start. Here is the thing motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor given diesel generally just can't run, so the person stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel given petrol generally starts, ticks over and moves off perfectly well for a couple of miles. It isn't okay. It is wearing out that fuel system while you drive.
- Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why your ignition stays off also — flick it on and you usually prime your system, and that's petrol exiting that tank for exactly those components.
- Topping up removes nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage in the way that advice suggests — so never pour diesel on top to weaken it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Sit tight if it is wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Park Lane, anywhere — a tricky spot for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to sort than a car that never moved.
- Know where you are before ringing. A postcode starting TF7 5, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of turning up.
- Three answers determine your whole visit: the stuff you put in, the rough measure involved, and if anything has been going since. The line is 0333 366 0103.
Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, left at Telford Central since first thing? The wait has lost you nothing — fuel in a tank is harmless. It was the run in that sucked weakened diesel through the pump. Phone before you collect the vehicle.
Petrol in the Renault Megane, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you at Aldi, somewhere around Woodside? Then phone, and leave your engine out of it — not even to get out of the spot. Somebody heads your way. Tank cleared, fuel lines flushed, clean diesel in, and home you go. Light throttle over a mile uses very little, and so these are usually the straightforward cases.
How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, so have both prepared. Your Skoda Octavia will have felt perfectly usual on the way back from William Reynolds Primary School and Nursery — they all do, and that's the catch. Diesel into a petrol vehicle generally will not run at all: the person stops, and so does the damage. Petrol into a diesel starts, idles, moves off like nothing happened, while the high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication the fuel should be giving it. No warning appears, since behind the wheel nothing appears wrong.
It will fire up. It will drive off perfectly well. That's the issue, because a diesel on a thinned tank behaves typically while wearing the components its fuel should be lubricating. So no, don't chance the trip home from Elizabethan — leave the Nissan Qashqai and call us.
Most of these happen somewhere strange, and the cause is mechanical rather than sloppy — almost no resistance meets a smaller petrol nozzle entering a newer diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel BMW 5 Series, a fill-up near Museum of Steel Sculpture that you did not think about? Ring us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone notices it, and the further they go, the more petrol winds up at your injectors.
Removing petrol from the diesel at the forecourt
Forecourts are where the job usually kicks off, and where a fair part of that ends. We operate on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's consent, so if you are still at Esso that's normally where this drain takes place.
Before the motor has run — the forecourt is the one place this gets spotted. The few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for your key determine how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as the tank. It is not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where your car stands.
The staff will normally help you move the vehicle clear of the pump so the next driver can get past. That is worth doing. Moving it four bays doesn't merit cranking the motor.
Areas we cover near Woodside
Lightmoor, Aqueduct, Madeley, Coalbrookdale, Little Dawley — each of these on the rounds that carry us over to Woodside too, a residential suburb.
There are pages for most places across Shropshire, and the ones listed above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being absent from the list tells you nothing whatsoever about whether our engineers come. Presuming is the thing to avoid, above all on the border or somewhere the satnav struggles. Ring us to enquire.
This map marks the patch the page includes. Your car doesn't need to travel to us. Our technicians work throughout all of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Woodside: stranded wherever you pulled up
Not everybody gets the opportunity to pull in somewhere sensible. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Hammer Fields as you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call so often that it is the ordinary kind.
Sit with the car while it's safe to sit inside, but out of the car when it is not. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the catch: fire it up to reach somewhere better and that mixture goes further into the system with every mile travelled. A technician driving to an inconvenient location is no bother for us, and it's far better for the vehicle than driving on.
So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles
Here is where your M54 matters, under 5 miles out of Woodside. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.
Take the first junction that's sensible, pull up there, and don't start it to reposition. Assume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Say so when you ring. What we bring changes.
Where is Woodside?
Woodside is a suburban area in Shropshire, situated inland at an elevation of 127 metres, with terraced housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Woodside lies approximately 14.8 miles west of Wolverhampton and 126.6 miles northwest of London, near the settlements of Lightmoor, Aqueduct, and Madeley. Woodside has a population of around 6513 people, making it a moderately sized community in the region.
Our call-out in Woodside, step by step
- The responses change the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of it, and if the motor has run.
- Away flows the contaminated fuel.
- Our engineers purge your fuel lines and clean the filter, so what is remaining in the fuel system isn't what caused the problem.
- Bleeding the system follows, once clean diesel is in.
- The motor is started and tested to be sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.
That has the car ready to set off. There is no need for a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it is caught early, long-term damage is very uncommon.
AdBlue in a diesel tank in Woodside is a different job
If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first step is unchanged — don't crank it — but this fault is not. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and deposits.
Both are ours. There's a separate Woodside page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.
Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Woodside
One figure wouldn't be fair here, since this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:
- Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the key one.
- How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much the tank takes.
- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
- Whether a van can sensibly get to your vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.
A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and whether it has run. For the car at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.
Questions our engineers hear about petrol in diesel in Woodside
Fuel drains on a Woodside petrol station forecourt
Plenty of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes. We attend JET and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether your motor has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is if that mixture has been sucked through the system.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?
Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of that tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable a lot more regularly than motorists fear.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
No. Carried out correctly, clearing and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.
Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?
What petrol has thinned is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate problem. So no. Later on? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?
You don't need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.
You, and the car, still together?
Your engine remains off.
If you have already driven it, stop somewhere safe, switch it off then leave it off. This is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists assume, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
