Worsley: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, across Worsley and the rest of Greater Manchester. The first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. While the motor has not yet turned over and the petrol is still sitting in the tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much went in. A single call our way will be sufficient: our engineers can explain what comes next. Try that first.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

  • Whenever you drive, your pump and your injectors wear down. This is why you do not crank it, and why you never trust it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point people get wrong — is that it drives off normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor usually can't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the damage with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Leave your ignition off as well. Diesel has two jobs: it burns, and before it ignites it greases your high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is usually sufficient to prime your system, which pulls the petrol out of the tank then into precisely those parts.
  • Topping up takes out nothing. It gives you a larger tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice implies — so never pour diesel on top to dilute it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Sit tight if it is safe to. Hazards on, motor off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Aviary Road, anywhere — a tricky place for us trumps a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to sort out than a motor that never shifted.
  • Before you call, work out your location. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode starting M28 2 — that's what decides whether our van shows up or circles.
  • Three answers decide the entire job: the liquid you poured in, the rough volume of it, and if anything has been turning since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, sitting at Walkden since breakfast? The day has cost you nothing — fuel in a tank is dormant. It was the drive in that drew thinned diesel through the pump. Ring us before you collect it.

The phone call our engineers like runs like this: diesel Skoda Octavia, a few litres of unleaded, done a couple of miles, now switched off at Spar. What we are actually asking is how much fuel your pump has drawn — not how long ago it was.

Do not drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst the car waits, since a diesel Mercedes C-Class parked at Worsley Woods is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.

Hardly ever the problem, the spot. On-street is the commonest spot our technicians work, and a cramped parking spot is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you ring from near St Mark (Church of England), is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a van can park next to without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then your Vauxhall Astra gets drained, the fuel filter changed where a workable one exists, your lines cleaned and fresh fuel put through the entire system — since by now the worst of it is in your lines, not the tank.

It got a couple of streets and stopped. The throttle went dead, your idle turned ragged, and the diesel Renault Captur is now resting by Worsley Village Library. That softness is your fuel failing to build pressure properly not your engine giving up — and because there's no warning light for it, cars in that position generally get driven a second time before anybody calls. Don't. Switch it off and phone us.

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Pumps are where the job often starts, and where a big chunk of that ends. Still at Esso? Then that's typically where it takes place. Station forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the site.

Nowhere except a forecourt can the mistake be caught with the motor still unstarted. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the keys.

Roll the car out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they normally will. The next driver gets by the pump, and that's worth doing. Cranking the car over four car lengths? Not a chance.

Worsley plus the places beside it

Those same journeys get us to Roe Green, Broad Oak, Egerton Park, Alder Forest and Parr Fold as well as Worsley, which is a riverside town.

If yours is not on this list it does not mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of places in Greater Manchester, and the ones mentioned above are merely the immediate neighbours. Ring us and ask instead of assuming — county lines especially, and wherever a satnav tends to misread.

The ground the page covers is on the map. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of that is ground our engineers serve, and none of that needs the car to travel to us.

Stuck by the roadside somewhere around Worsley?

Not everybody finds a safe spot to pull over. A normal call for us rather than an unusual one: worked out after setting off, ended up along the verge on Leaconfield Drive or in a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Whether you sit by the car or stand away from it turns on if being in it is sensible. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the blend further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier. However tricky the location, it is no trouble for us to come to it, and that's far better for the car than driving on.

Driven it already? Pull over, then check this

The local M60 is the road which counts now, and it lies under a mile from Worsley. A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they appear are usually a drop in power, a lumpy idle and some smoke rather than a clean stop.

Come off at the next sensible exit, switch off, and do not start it to reposition. Long run? Anything near the under 5 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the mixture. Say that on the phone, because it affects what goes in the van.

A bit about Worsley

Worsley is a town in Greater Manchester, situated on the banks of the Bridgewater Canal and the River Irwell, with a mix of semi-detached housing and other residential properties. Worsley sits at an elevation of around 68 metres, approximately 4 miles southwest of Salford and 167 miles northwest of London. Worsley is close to nearby places such as Roe Green, Broad Oak, and Egerton Park, and has a population of around 10,992 people. Worsley remains a popular residential area with a strong sense of community.

What our technicians do when we reach you around Worsley

  • The responses alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what went in, how much of that, and whether your motor has run.
  • Our technicians clear your tank of all the polluted mixture.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever remains later isn't the thing that created the issue.
  • Our technicians pour new diesel in and bleed your system.
  • The motor is fired up and checked to make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

The car is then ready for you to drive away. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught early, permanent damage is very rare.

A distinct matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Worsley

Do not crank it: that opening instruction holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the problem itself. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Worsley page. Both are ours to handle.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Worsley?

We cannot put one figure on this page truthfully, because the job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much the tank holds.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's safe for a van.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range. Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel questions from Worsley drivers

I am on a forecourt in Worsley. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Much of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the site's permission our technicians visit Texaco and the other forecourts around town regularly.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. What settles how much work is required is whether that mix has been pulled through the system — because though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what moves the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's fixable a lot more commonly than people fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, emptying and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has weakened is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a separate problem. So no. Your pump still has to cope with it, since the tank still has petrol in it later.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Turned off is how it stays.

Turn it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it. A parked, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than drivers assume.
