Petrol in Diesel

Worting: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never turn on your engine. While the fuel is still sitting in the tank and the engine has not turned over, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes — and that is decided in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, across Worting and the remainder of Hampshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. Our technicians will explain what your next step is. Contact us — this comes ahead of anything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine for a few miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not start the car. And if started, do not trust it: that fuel system is grinding while you drive.
  • Leave the car's ignition be also. Diesel has two tasks: it ignites, and before it combusts it protects the high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Turning the ignition on is frequently enough to prime that system, which moves that petrol out of that tank then into just those components.
  • That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It will not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A car that has never shifted is the quickest one to handle, and we would rather come to an odd location than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Church Lane, switch those hazards on then leave it there.
  • Check where you are before calling. A postcode that starts RG23 8, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of arriving.
  • Three details decide the full visit: the liquid you tipped in, the ballpark volume of it, and if it has been going since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

Plenty of the job begins at a forecourt, which means a good part of that is completed there. If you are still on the forecourt at Shell, that is usually where the drain gets done — we work on garage forecourts routinely, with the site's permission.

A forecourt is the one setting it is stopped before the motor has started. The few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for the key settle how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and your filter need flushing as well as your tank. It is not a calamity, and our technicians can still sort it out where your car sits.

Roll the vehicle out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they normally will. The next motorist gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Worting

Worting plus the villages near it

Buckskin, Winklebury, Newfound, West Ham, Kempshott — all of these on our journeys that carry us across to Worting as well, a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on the list it doesn't mean we never come — there are separate pages for the majority of locations around Hampshire, and the ones listed above are simply the immediate neighbours. On the border, or somewhere a satnav gets wrong? Ring us to check rather than assuming.

The patch this page spans appears on this map. Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of it is territory we serve, and none of it requires your vehicle to travel to us.

Twenty to nine by Chiltern Primary School, running late, and your receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, motor off, call us. Three miles in your Nissan Qashqai seems like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel on demand — and a rushed morning drive asks for plenty.

Three answers decide most of the work: what got in, approximately how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for those answers when we arrive at the vehicle in the car park at The White Hart Inn. Then the tainted mixture comes out of the tank, your lines are flushed, and where your Audi A4 has a replaceable filter, it comes off. After fresh diesel is in and the system primed, our technicians start the car and confirm it runs correctly before you drive away.

Do not drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst the vehicle stands, because a diesel Mercedes C-Class parked at Basingstoke Pitch and Putt is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.

Leave the BMW 1 Series by Saint Thomas Of Canterbury and phone us. We're firm about not driving on because a worn-out pump loses, and what it sheds moves downstream with your fuel to your injectors beyond it.

Most of these occur somewhere new, and the cause is mechanical rather than sloppy — practically no resistance meets a narrower petrol nozzle entering a newer diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Peugeot 208, a fill-up by Buckskin Evangelical Church that you didn't think about? Phone us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody spots it, and the further they go, the more petrol ends up at the injectors.

Stopped by the kerb somewhere in Worting?

Not everyone gets a safe spot to pull in. Set off, then twigged? Ended up on the verge beside Worting Road, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards on? That's a common call here. Not an unusual one.

Remain beside the vehicle while it's sensible to sit there, and clear of it if it is not. Never fire up the engine to nurse the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mix further into your fuel system. Driving on causes the vehicle far more harm than a technician coming out to a tricky place, and that's no problem for us.

Run it already? Pull over, and check this

under 3 miles from Worting, the M3 is what counts now. A drop in power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they come, instead of a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. Presume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you phone. What our engineers bring alters.

Worting itself

Worting is a suburban area in Hampshire, situated inland at an elevation of 107 metres, with terraced housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Worting lies approximately 46.8 miles from London and 15.7 miles from the nearby city of Winchester, placing it within the wider commuter belt of the South East region. Worting is surrounded by other suburban areas, including Buckskin, Winklebury, and Newfound, and has a population of around 3443 residents. Worting's location allows for easy access to the surrounding countryside and nearby urban centres.

What follows when we reach you around Worting

  • The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of it, and if your engine has run.
  • That tank is cleared of it.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever remains later is not the thing that caused the problem.
  • Our technicians put fresh diesel in and prime your system.
  • Our engineers turn it on and make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

At that point it is ready to set off. We do all of this wherever the vehicle has stopped, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and if it has been caught quickly, it's very unusual for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Worting is a different job

The issue is not the same, though the opening step is — never start it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the protection the fuel system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Worting page. Both are ours to deal with.

Worting pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

What moves the price is listed below, as the job isn't one job and our engineers can't frankly put a single price on this page.

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much your tank can hold.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can safely reach your car and work on it, which hinges on where your car is.

Tell us the car, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a straight answer rather than a range. Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.

Worting drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

At a petrol station in Worting, can you do a fuel drain there?

A large portion of this work happens there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the station's permission we visit Texaco and the other forecourts locally routinely.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your motor has run matters much more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. What settles how much work is needed is if that blend has been drawn through your fuel system — since even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. Now what?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what shifts the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's fixable far more commonly than people expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to stay off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind replaces. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, because our engineers drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

You, and your car, still together?

Your engine remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later on. This is recoverable from much more commonly than motorists assume, and a still, cold car is the best position to be in.
