Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Wraysbury?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, across Wraysbury and the rest of Berkshire. The first thing to do is not to start the motor. While the engine has not run and the petrol is still sitting in the tank, a drain is almost always all it requires, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much got in. Contact us and then our technicians will explain what follows from here before you try much else.

What to do first about petrol in a diesel

  • Don't crank it. Turned on anyway? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally can't run, so the motorist stops and the harm halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off normally, for several miles. Motorists get that muddled. It isn't all right — the fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it ignites it greases — that high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave your ignition alone too: flicking it on is commonly all it takes to prime your system, and priming draws petrol from that tank into just those parts.
  • Never put diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage as that guidance implies, and topping up removes nothing — it merely leaves you a bigger tank of the same blend. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A car that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to sort, and our team would much rather drive to a difficult location than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Staines Road, switch those hazards on and leave the vehicle there.
  • Before you ring, get your position. Anything nearest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode that starts TW19 5 — that's what decides whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • Three answers settle your whole call-out: the liquid you tipped in, the ballpark volume of it, and whether anything has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Quarter past eight, a fast fill on the drive in, and it dawns on you somewhere around eleven — by that point your diesel Volkswagen Golf has been parked at the nearest station for three hours. Ring us then leave the vehicle exactly where it sits. The run in is the bit that matters most, because diesel has two jobs on its way through a motor: it combusts, and before it ignites it protects the high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were covered with your pump working on a fluid that had given up most of the protection it is built around — which is why the question our technicians ask is how many miles you travelled, not how long the car has been parked.

Nothing warns you, since from the driver's seat there is nothing to be warned about. The diesel Ford Focus will have seemed entirely normal on the way back from Wraysbury Primary School, and they all do — which is the catch with petrol in a diesel and not the reverse. Diesel in a petrol motor generally refuses to run, stopping the motorist and stopping the damage with them. Petrol in a diesel starts, idles, moves off as though nothing had happened, and all the while your pump keeps working without the lubrication its fuel is supposed to supply. Tell us roughly how far, and how hard. The harder matters more.

Your pump is not turning, and so whatever your diesel Peugeot 3008 did on the way to Friary Field, none of it is happening now. Nothing is getting worse whilst it sits. Take your time over this — but do not drive the car home to buy any.

Hire car or company car? Phone them before you phone us — some agreements want the hire firm to approve the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it after that. Then phone us about the BMW X1 by Wraysbury Village Hall, and don't worry that you cannot say how full the tank was. Almost nobody can, in a motor they picked up two days ago, and our engineers work it out on site. The reason our engineers ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a ratio: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger mixture than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger the blend, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

That sluggishness is the fuel failing to build pressure fully, not your engine packing up — and with no warning light for it, motors in that position usually get driven a second time before anyone phones. Please don't. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone soft, idle turned lumpy, and a diesel Mercedes GLC now waiting close to St Andrews. Switch it off and phone us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Wraysbury

Removing petrol from a diesel at the forecourt

Most of the job starts at the pump, which means a fair part of it is done on site. If you're still at the forecourt at BP, that is generally where the drain takes place — our technicians work on garage forecourts all the time, with the station's consent.

A forecourt is the only place it can be spotted before your engine has fired. We can still sort it out where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure pump, right from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to go past that tank to your lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the key are what settle that.

The attendants will normally help you push it clear of the pump so the next driver can get past. It is worth doing. Starting it for four car lengths? Don't.

Can we reach your side of Wraysbury?

Sunnymeads, Hythe End, Runnymede, Old Windsor, Horton — all of those on our journeys that take us out to Wraysbury itself, a rural village.

There are dedicated pages for most places around Berkshire, and the ones listed above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off the list means nothing about whether our engineers come. Near a boundary, or somewhere the satnav can't find? Call us and ask instead of assuming.

This map marks the patch the page spans. Your car does not need to move to us. Our technicians work throughout all of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Wraysbury: stuck where you stopped

Not everybody has the chance to pull over anywhere sensible. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside High Street as you worked it out after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it is the normal kind.

Safe where you are? Remain beside it. Not okay? Move out and away from it. Do not start it up to get to a safer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mixture deeper into the fuel system. We'll bring the van to an awkward location without any trouble, and for the car that is far better than pressing on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

This is where your M25 comes into it — under 3 miles away from Wraysbury. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Come off at the next sensible exit, switch off, and do not start it to reposition. It alters what our technicians bring, so tell us when you phone: on a longer run — anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors.

Wraysbury itself

Wraysbury is a village in Berkshire, situated near the River Thames and close to the historic area of Runnymede. Wraysbury has a low elevation of around 19 metres and is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock. Wraysbury is located near other small communities such as Sunnymeads and Hythe End, and is within commuting distance of London, being approximately 18.7 miles from Westminster.

What follows when our technicians reach you in Wraysbury

  • Three things get established before any price — your fuel that went in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Out goes the polluted fuel.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later on isn't the thing that created the issue.
  • Our technicians pour clean diesel in and prime the system.
  • Your engine is started and tested to be sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

From there, you're ready to drive away. Permanent damage is very rare when it has been spotted early, and since all of this is done where your car is, it never needs to go to a garage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Wraysbury?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the motor stays off — while this fault underneath it's a separate one altogether. Petrol dilutes the diesel and takes away the protection the fuel system relies on. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and residue in its place.

Both are ours. There's a separate Wraysbury page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Wraysbury

What shifts the price is listed below, because this job is not one job and our engineers can't truthfully put a single figure on this page.

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that proportion.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can safely get to your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your car is.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. If it is not time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Wraysbury motorists

At a petrol station around Wraysbury, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes. Often, provided the site consents: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that place is something we answer straight away.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. What settles how much work is required is whether that blend has been pulled through the fuel system — since even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What now?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable much more commonly than motorists expect.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't an alteration and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to stay off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Your pump still has to live with it, as the tank still has petrol in it after that.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Still with the car?

The engine stays off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, switch off, and let the vehicle remain that way. A parked, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more often than drivers fear.
