Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Wybourn

Don't turn on the motor. While the petrol is still sitting in the tank and the engine has not yet been started, a drain is almost always all it needs — and that gets determined in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, across Wybourn and the rest of South Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. Just one call our way is plenty: our engineers can tell you what happens from here. Try this first.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Never fire it up — and don't trust it if it does start. Here is the bit motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor fed diesel typically just won't run, and so the motorist stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel filled with petrol generally starts, ticks over and drives off quite happily for a few miles. It is not fine. It is wearing out the fuel system as you drive.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. That is why the car's ignition remains off too — switch it on and you often prime your system, and that is petrol exiting your tank for exactly those components.
  • Never add diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system doesn't handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes, and topping up removes nothing — it only leaves you a larger tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Our team would rather travel to an awkward location than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a car that has not moved. On the verge on Wybourn House Road, that means hazards on then keep the vehicle.
  • Keep your whereabouts ready before you call. A postcode starting S2 1 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between a van turning up and the van circling.
  • What went in, approximately how many litres, and if the engine has fired — these three replies settle the full job. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Your high-pressure pump did that morning commute running on a liquid that had given up a great deal of the protection it is built around. Diesel protects that pump, and the fuel injectors with it, before any of the fuel ignites; petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. So picture a diesel Volkswagen Golf, fuelled at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and left sitting outside Darnall until you realise at about eleven. Three hours of standing have altered nothing about it. The few miles before that did a good deal, which is why the thing our engineers ask you is about distance rather than hours. Call us. Keep it right where it is.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not just burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build and stay built leaks past clearances instead, leaving your engine a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was designed round. Petrol dilutes diesel, and diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the tightly fitted parts it flows through — that is the whole process. It explains the normal Seaton Field call too: a diesel Audi A3 that drove out without a murmur and came back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly smoking a little. None of which is the engine failing, and that is the part worth hearing. The fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.

Your pump rests ahead of the injectors, so whatever a worn-out one loses passes downstream with your fuel — which is why we're firm about not driving on. Call us, and leave your diesel Vauxhall Astra where it's near Fancy A Brew.

Rattling? Uneven idle? White smoke, throttle gone limp? That's your misfuelled Ford Kuga, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, maybe close to Pat Midgley Community Centre, then leave the restarting alone.

It got a couple of streets and stopped. The throttle went dead, the idle turned uneven, and the diesel Citroen C3 is now sitting close to Cow. That softness is your fuel failing to build pressure properly rather than the motor giving up — and as there's no warning for it, cars in that position usually get driven a second time before anybody rings. Do not. Turn it off and phone us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Wybourn

Draining petrol from the diesel on a forecourt

A good portion of this job is done at the pump, because that is where it mostly begins. The drain generally takes place there and then. Still on the forecourt at Costco? Given the site's agreement, that is somewhere our engineers work, and often.

Before your motor has fired — the forecourt is the only place the mistake ends up spotted. The few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the key settle how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the lines and your filter need flushing as well as that tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where the car is.

Clear of the pump, the next motorist can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel the vehicle. Very much worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth the risk.

Coverage around Wybourn

Cricket Houses, Manor Park, The Manor, Sheffield Park, Attercliffe — each of these on our trips that take us out to Wybourn too, a residential suburb.

Not on this list? That tells you nothing. The names above are just the closest few, and most places across South Yorkshire have a page of their own somewhere on the site. Phone and ask instead of guessing — county lines especially, and anywhere a satnav may get wrong.

See this map for the ground included here. We operate roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and the car does not need to come to us.

Stranded by the kerbside anywhere around Wybourn?

Some people find no sensible spot to pull in whatsoever. Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside Manor Way since you realised after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it is the normal kind.

Fine right there? Stay with it. Not fine? Get out and clear of it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier. We'll take our van to a difficult place without any bother, and for the vehicle that's far better than carrying on.

Run it already? Pull over, and check below

Here is where your M1 comes in — under 3 miles away from Wybourn. A misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are generally lost power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a neat stop.

Take the first junction that's sensible, stop there, and never restart the vehicle to move it. Long trip? Anything close to the under 3 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the mixture. Say that on the call, as it changes what goes in the van.

Wybourn itself

Wybourn is a suburban area located near the city of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, sitting at an elevation of around 100 metres. Wybourn is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock and is situated close to nearby places such as Cricket Houses and Manor Park. Wybourn is a relatively small area, with a population of approximately 4553 people, and is positioned about 1.3 miles from Sheffield's city centre. Wybourn is also near The Manor, a notable local landmark.

What our technicians do when we get to you around Wybourn

  • We check what was put in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The responses change the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.
  • The polluted mixture is pulled out of your tank.
  • What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what started the trouble, so your fuel lines get purged and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
  • It is fired up with new diesel in it, and we confirm that it's running correctly.

Then it's ready to drive away. Long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been caught quickly, and since everything is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.

A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Wybourn

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — the motor remains off — whereas the fault underneath it's a distinct one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the protection the fuel system relies on. Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Wybourn page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Wybourn costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Honestly, no single price belongs on a page like this. The job differs. Here is what changes it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much that tank takes.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for a van.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not urgent, works too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Wybourn motorists

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Wybourn?

A good share of this work takes place there, so yes. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's permission we visit Esso and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the proportion rather than the litres, and far more on whether your motor has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mixture sucked through it.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving takes the trouble along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't an alteration and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has weakened isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a distinct issue. So no. Your pump still has to put up with it, as the tank still has petrol in it later on.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

There is no need to take it to a main dealer, since our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

Is the vehicle still with you?

Leave the engine turned off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it after that. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.
