Petrol in Diesel

Wychbold: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Don't turn on the engine. If the petrol is still inside the tank and the motor has not turned over, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes — and that gets settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, all over Wychbold and the rest of Worcestershire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. We shall explain what the next stage is. Phone — it comes ahead of anything else.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Don't start the car. Started regardless? Then do not believe it. Diesel in a petrol car generally won't run, so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off normally, for several miles. Most people get that confused. It isn't all right — the fuel system is grinding every mile you do.
  • Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the car's ignition is left off also — turn it on and you frequently prime the system, and that's petrol leaving that tank for precisely those components.
  • Topping up takes out nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance suggests — so don't add diesel on top to thin it. Grade is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that has never shifted is the quickest one to sort out, and our team would much rather travel to an odd location than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Walkmill Drive, switch your hazards on then keep the vehicle there.
  • Our van showing up instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode beginning WR9 7, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Keep both ready before you phone.
  • What was put in, approximately how many litres, plus whether the car has fired — the three replies settle the entire visit. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Removing petrol from a diesel on a forecourt

Most of the job starts at the pump, meaning a good share of it gets completed at one. If you're still on the forecourt at Esso, that's generally where the drain happens — we operate on garage forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement.

Before your motor has started — the forecourt is the one spot the mistake gets spotted. Fuel pulled out of your tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when your engine is started and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and the lines along with the tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our technicians put it right where the car sits. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Move it out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they generally will. The next motorist gets past the pump, and that is worth doing. Shifting the car four bays does not warrant cranking the engine.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Wychbold

We are in car parks like the one outside Waitrose all the time, and it's almost never your fuel that complicates them. It's that bay. Vehicles both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Occasionally a height limit at the entrance, which settles whether a technician can reach you at all. So tell us how boxed in you are when you phone, and which way your car is facing. If there's no space to work alongside that Audi A4, our technicians shift it without your engine. That's not pedantry over a couple of seconds: starts prime things, blend comes out of that tank toward your pump, and a vehicle moved twice for a roomier space is gradually a bigger job than one nobody touched.

A diesel Mercedes E-Class in the parking area by The Crown with a tank of petrol in it is an easy job, right up until somebody takes it home. Park the car there overnight and ring us first thing. Nothing degrades while it sits. What we will ask is whether that trip there was short and chilly, since that is where petrol is least able to burn correctly — and anything that won't burn can get past the piston rings and into the oil.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not merely burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built leaks past tolerances instead, leaving the motor a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was designed round. Petrol dilutes diesel, and diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the tightly fitted parts it flows through — that's the entire mechanism. It explains the usual Centurion Way Woods call too: a diesel Peugeot 208 that went out without a murmur and came back down on power, rough at idle, maybe smoking a little. None of which is your engine failing, and that's the bit worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put the fuel right and it stops.

A motor you picked up two days ago gets driven further before anybody notices anything, which is the hire and courtesy fault in one sentence — and how far it went is what decides the volume of petrol reaching the fuel injectors. Nothing careless about the mistake itself: a newer diesel filler neck takes the slimmer petrol nozzle with practically no resistance, and so strange places see most of these. Call us from wherever you are, near Aztec Aquaglide Aqua Park or not, and we'll head to the Renault Captur.

No warning exists for this, which is why motors in that position usually get driven again before anybody rings. Don't be one of them. The throttle went soft and your idle turned uneven after a few streets, and your diesel Citroen C4 is now waiting by Aztec Adventure. Deadness there means fuel that can't build pressure properly instead of an engine giving up. Switch off. Ring us.

Coverage near Wychbold

Rashwood, Henbrook, Astwood, Upton Warren, Stoke Prior — every one of them on our journeys that carry us across to Wychbold itself, a village.

Not on the list? That tells you nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and most towns around Worcestershire have a page of their own somewhere on this site. Ring us to check rather than assuming — boundaries especially, and wherever a satnav can struggle with.

The patch this page spans is on the map. All of it is territory we serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never move your car anywhere.

Wychbold: stranded wherever you stopped

Not everyone gets a sensible place to pull over. If you noticed after setting off and finished up on the verge of Chapel Mews, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards going, that is a routine call for us instead of a rare one.

Clear of the motor while it is not sensible to sit there, by it when it is. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the trouble: fire it up to get to somewhere safer and the blend goes further into the system with every mile driven. Our van coming to a tricky location is no problem for us, and it's far better for the car than carrying on.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

under a mile out of Wychbold, the M5 is what matters here. A misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the signs when they come are normally a loss of power, an uneven idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.

Do not restart it to reposition. Get off at the first sensible exit then switch off. Presume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Say so when you ring. What our engineers bring differs.

What comes next when our engineers reach you in Wychbold

  • The replies shape the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what went in, how much of it, and if the motor has run.
  • Away comes the tainted mixture.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever remains after that isn't the thing that started the issue.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
  • The motor is turned on and checked to be sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. Our technicians do all of this wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, it's very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Wychbold is a distinct matter

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening rule is the same — do not start it — yet the problem is not. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol. Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Wychbold page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Wychbold pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Our technicians cannot put one figure on this page truthfully, since this job isn't one job. What moves it:

  • This is the key one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much the tank takes.
  • The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the car is, and whether our van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if your motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.

Petrol in diesel: everyday queries in Wychbold

I'm on a forecourt in Wychbold. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Yes, and it's where a big share of this work takes place. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there's possible.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the engine has run matters much more, though the ratio matters too, rather than the litres. What settles how much work is required is whether that blend has been sucked through your fuel system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of that tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable much more regularly than drivers fear.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It's not a modification, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has diluted is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a distinct issue. So no. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You do not need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

Still with the car?

Never turn your engine back on.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere safe, switch it off and keep it off. Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best position available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
