Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Wyesham? Don't Start It

If you have not turned on your engine as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is almost always what a motor requires while the fuel is still in your tank and the motor has not yet turned over, which is why it's the coming few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest in Wyesham or the rest of Monmouthshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. Call us before all else begins, so you'll learn what happens next.

The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't fire it up — and do not believe it if it fires up. That is the thing drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor filled with diesel generally just will not run, and so the driver stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, ticks over and drives away perfectly well for a couple of miles. It is not fine. It's grinding the fuel system as you drive.
  • Leave your ignition alone too. Diesel does two tasks: it ignites, and before it ignites it lubricates your injection pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Flicking your ignition on is often enough to prime your system, which carries the petrol out of the tank then into just those components.
  • Do not water down it. Diesel added on top clears nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • A vehicle that has never shifted is the simplest one to sort, so wait where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on The Paddocks? Hazards on, then leave it there. An odd location works for us better than a started engine.
  • Before you call, work out your position. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode beginning NP25 3 — that is what decides whether the technician turns up or circles.
  • Three answers determine the entire job: the stuff you tipped in, the approximate amount involved, and if anything has been turning since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Never drive it home. The drive in has already pushed a real amount of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of that Renault Megane, and the trip back would close to double it for no gain at all. Ring us from the platform if that is simpler. We never need you hovering over the vehicle at Lydney whilst our technicians get on, and we'd much rather hear from you tonight than learn on Monday.

Straightforward, these ones, and the reason is the miles: a mile at gentle throttle pulls little fuel. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Passat somewhere in Wyesham, a boot full of shopping, and you sat outside Lidl — phone us. Leaving that space isn't worth a restart. That tank gets drained where it waits, the lines cleaned, clean diesel in, and you drive away.

Twenty to nine. Outside Redbrook Church of England Primary School. Late already, and your receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Put your hazards on, leave the engine alone, then phone us. You may think three miles is nothing, in the Peugeot 308 or anything else — except that fuel is delivered to demand, and a drive taken in a hurry needs a great deal of it.

Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the close-fitting parts it flows through, and petrol thins it. That's the full mechanism, and it accounts for the usual Millennium Fields call: a diesel Ford Focus that drove out there without complaint and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, perhaps smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs your fuel to hold pressure, not just to burn — so when the fuel thins, pressure that should build and stay built starts bleeding past gaps instead, and the engine gets a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was built round. None of that is your engine failing, which is the bit worth hearing: it's the fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is sorted.

Authorisation first, where there is a hire firm or a company behind the vehicle — some contracts demand it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, call us about your diesel BMW 1 Series close to Blake Theatre. You'll not know how full the tank was. Scarcely anybody does, two days into a car, and it gets worked out there regardless. We ask because the damage petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a much stronger blend than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is engineered to resist igniting under pressure, which is precisely what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more your engine rattles and smokes and flattens off.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Wyesham

Can petrol be pumped out of a diesel at a forecourt?

Plenty of the work starts at a pump, which means a big share of that is finished at one. The drain typically gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the site's permission, that's a spot we work, and regularly.

At a garage, the mistake gets stopped with the engine never run, and no place else manages it. We can still put it right where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to reach past the tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the key are what settle that.

Away from the pump, the next motorist can get past — so yes, let the staff help you wheel it. Very much worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a restart.

Service around Wyesham

Wyesham is a residential suburb, and so we head out to the town and to anywhere near it on the usual journeys: May Hill, Monmouth, Kymin, Chippenham and Dixton.

Not on that list? That tells you nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and most towns in Monmouthshire have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. Call us and check rather than presuming, particularly when you are on a border or somewhere a satnav misreads.

See this map for the patch covered here. The car doesn't need to move to us. We operate over every bit of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stuck by the kerbside in Wyesham

Not everyone has the opportunity to pull in anywhere sensible. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Wyesham Road since you worked it out after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it is the ordinary kind.

Whether you wait beside your car or move clear of it depends on whether sitting nearby is wise. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the catch: restart the vehicle to get to somewhere safer and the mixture goes further into the system with every mile travelled. However inconvenient the spot, it's no problem for us to get to it, and that's a lot better for the car than carrying on.

Run it already? Pull over, and check this

This is where the local M50 comes in, under 15 miles from Wyesham. It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Take the first exit that is safe, stop there, and do not restart the car to reposition. Long trip? Anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the petrol. Say that on the phone, as it alters what goes in the van.

A bit about Wyesham

Wyesham is a suburban area situated on the banks of the River Wye in Monmouthshire, Wales, with an elevation of around 42 metres. Wyesham lies close to the English border, near the town of Monmouth and the distinctive landmark of May Hill. Wyesham has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are particularly prevalent in the area. Wyesham is located near the city of Hereford, which is approximately 17 miles away.

Our call-out around Wyesham, step by step

  • Three things get asked before any price — the fuel that was put in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Away flows the contaminated fuel.
  • Our technicians flush the fuel lines and clear the filter, so what is remaining in the system is not what caused the problem.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.
  • Our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

From that point, you are ready to set off. All of this is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted early, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Wyesham AdBlue removal is a different matter

Don't crank it: that opening rule holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself. Petrol thins your diesel and takes away the protection your fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

Both are ours. There is a separate Wyesham page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Wyesham costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Truthfully, no single price fits on a page like this. The job differs. Here is what changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for our van.

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a firm answer instead of a range. Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Petrol in diesel: frequent queries around Wyesham

At a petrol station around Wyesham, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the site's permission we visit Applegreen and the other forecourts around town routinely.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether your motor has run matters much more, though the ratio matters too, rather than the litres. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that mix has been sucked through the system.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, and leave the vehicle off. Driving is what takes the issue from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it is fixable a lot more frequently than drivers expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and rinsing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the car turned off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a separate era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind replaces. That tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to cope with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

No. Our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a dealership.

Is the car still with you?

Keep the car switched off.

Turn it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it. A still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more commonly than people fear.
