Petrol in Diesel

Wyke: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on your engine as yet, don't. A drain and nothing else is nearly always what a motor requires while the petrol is still sitting in your tank and the engine has not yet run, which is why it is the coming few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has ended up in Wyke or the rest of Shropshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. Phone before anything else happens, and you will see what comes next.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Never crank it — and don't believe it when it runs. Here is the thing motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor given diesel usually just won't run, and so the driver stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel given petrol normally starts, idles and drives away without complaint for several miles. It isn't all right. It is grinding that fuel system while you drive.
  • Switching your ignition on frequently primes the system, and priming is what moves petrol out of that tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the car's ignition off.
  • Do not weaken it. Diesel added on top takes out nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • We would rather drive to an odd spot than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is easier to sort than a vehicle that has never shifted. On the verge on Benthall Lane, that means hazards on and keep the car.
  • Our van showing up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning TF13 6, and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it. Have both ready before you dial.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Say what got in, approximately how much, plus whether the engine has fired. These three replies decide the whole call-out.

Do not take it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has run through the high-pressure pump in real volume on the road in, and the way back would close to double that for nothing at all. Call us — the platform is fine. There's no need to stand over the Renault Megane at Telford Central whilst the work gets done, and we would very much rather speak to you tonight than find out on Monday.

A diesel Audi A4 sitting in the parking area at the pub in the village with a tank of petrol in it is a straightforward job, right up till somebody takes it home. Leave it overnight then ring us in the morning. Nothing deteriorates whilst it waits. What we will ask is if that drive there was short and chilly, since that's where petrol is slowest to burn fully — and anything that won't burn can get past the rings and into the sump.

Nothing is getting worse whilst it waits. Whatever the diesel Ford Focus did on the way to Audience Wood, it is doing none of that now: your pump is not turning. So take your time — but do not drive it home to buy yourself any.

We clean your lines rather than only emptying your tank, and the reason is that weakened fuel has already arrived at the filter and your pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The drive truly helps — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Mercedes E-Class parked up by St Bartholomew's a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Phone us then leave it off.

The filter, your lines, the pump and its rail: that's where the blend is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with the tank contents. So that tank isn't where most of the trouble waits by this point, and a diesel Skoda Superb that got by Ironbridge Rowing Club needs the system flushed instead of cleared.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Wyke

Clearing petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

A large portion of the work ends up completed at a forecourt, since that is where it mostly kicks off. If you're still on the forecourt at the nearest petrol station, that is generally where the drain gets done — our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the station's agreement.

At a garage, it gets caught with your motor never run, and no place else manages it. Our engineers can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been switched on and moved there, and that sucked fuel through your filter and into your high-pressure pump, right from that tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to reach past your tank to your lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the keys are what determine that.

Attendants will generally help out pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get through. Accept the help. Four car lengths isn't worth a start.

Wyke plus the towns next to it

The same journeys carry us to Posenhall, Farley, Benthall, Barrow and Broseley besides Wyke, which is a rural hamlet.

If yours isn't on the list it doesn't mean we never come — there are separate pages for most places around Shropshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the immediate neighbours. Near the border, or anywhere the satnav misreads? Phone to check rather than assuming.

See this map for the ground shown here. The lot is ground we cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not bring the vehicle anywhere.

Wyke: stranded where you parked

Not everybody finds a sensible place to stop. Set off, then noticed? Landed on the verge of B4375, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazards going? That's a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Sit beside your car while it is sensible to sit in it, but clear of the car if it's not. Never restart it to reach a safer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the blend deeper into the fuel system. A van driving to an inconvenient location is no bother for us, and it is a lot better for your car than driving on.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

This is where the local M54 counts, under 10 miles out of Wyke. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Come off at the first sensible exit, turn off, and don't start the car to reposition. Long drive? Anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the petrol. Say that on the call, because it affects what goes in our van.

Where is Wyke?

Wyke is a small hamlet in Shropshire, situated inland at an elevation of 171 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Wyke lies near the villages of Posenhall, Farley, and Benthall, and is approximately 16.6 miles from Wolverhampton. Wyke is a rural community with a population of around 501 residents, located in the West Midlands region of England. Wyke is also relatively distant from London, at a distance of 127.3 miles.

Our call-out in Wyke, step by step

  • The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of that, and whether your engine has run.
  • The polluted mixture comes out of your tank.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • Once it is turned on, our technicians confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

At that point it is ready to pull away. There's no need for a workshop at any stage, since the work is all done where your car is, and when it's caught early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Wyke AdBlue removal is a different matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your engine remains off — whereas the issue underneath it is a separate one altogether. Petrol weakens your diesel and strips the protection the fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

AdBlue removal around Wyke has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's frequently the more significant of the two. Our technicians cover both.

Wyke pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Frankly, no single figure fits on a page like this. The job changes. Here's what changes it:

  • This is the key one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's safe for a van.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and isn't time-critical, is fine too.

Wyke drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

I am on a forecourt in Wyke. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a big portion of this happens. Often, provided the site consents: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something our engineers answer there and then.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate situations, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that blend drawn through it.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of your tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable far more commonly than motorists expect.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different problem and it does not restore what petrol has diluted. The pump still has to cope with it, since that tank still has petrol in it after that.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

Is your car still with you?

Turned off is how it stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting it afterwards. A stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more regularly than drivers expect.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining around Wyke and throughout Shropshire.
