Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Wyke? Don't Start It

If you have not started your engine as yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car requires while the fuel is still inside the tank and the engine has not run, which is why it is the following few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has stopped in Wyke or the rest of Surrey, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. One call our way will be plenty: our engineers can tell you what comes next. Do it right away.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

  • Give a petrol motor diesel and it will typically not run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it moves off — fine enough for several miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't fire it up. And if started, never rely on it: your fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.
  • Leave the car's ignition off too. Diesel does two roles: it ignites, and before it burns it greases the high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Flicking the ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime your system, which pulls that petrol out of the tank then into precisely those parts.
  • Never add diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage as that advice suggests, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely hands you a bigger tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Our team would rather travel to a tricky location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, sit tight. Nothing is easier to sort out than a vehicle that has never moved. On the verge on Wyke Lane, that means hazards on and leave the car.
  • Get your whereabouts ready before you ring. A postcode starting GU12 6 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van showing up and a van circling.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three questions — what got in, roughly how much, plus whether the engine has been run. Those answers determine all that follows.

Your high-pressure pump did that morning drive working on a fluid that had shed most of the protection it is made for. Diesel greases that pump, and your injectors with it, before any of your fuel combusts; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So picture a diesel Renault Megane, fuelled at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and parked sitting outside Ash till it dawns on you around eleven. Three hours of standing have altered nothing about it. The couple of miles before that did plenty, which is why the thing our engineers ask you is about miles not hours. Phone us. Leave it exactly where it stands.

Standing still, it gets no worse. Your pump isn't turning, so whatever occurred on the way to Harpers Recreation Ground in that diesel Mercedes C-Class is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on the motor to find more of that.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a few hundred yards, parked by Ash Manor. For a diesel Dacia Duster whose motor has turned, that's about the best version there is. Call us, and let the car stand with your ignition alone. Short helps, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the fuel filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why the fuel lines get purged and not just your tank emptied.

Rattling? Ragged idle? White smoke, throttle gone limp? That's your wrongly fuelled BMW 5 Series, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, possibly close to St Peter's Centre, then leave the restarting alone.

Fixed and starting aren't the same thing, and the difference is the system: our technicians flush it, and take the filter off where there is a workable one. Compare that with the certain suggestion you'll get — drain the car, refill with clean diesel. Half true. Do exactly that to a diesel Citroen C4 close to St Peter's Ash and it will start, which is exactly why the advice sounds reasonable. Then the engine draws the petrol left behind in the filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, as emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead.

On the forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

A good portion of the work gets finished at a forecourt, because that is where it usually starts. Still at JET? Then that's generally where it gets done. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the site.

A filling station is the one setting the mistake is spotted before your engine has started. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and we can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for the keys.

Away from the pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel the car. Worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a start.

Service around Wyke

Ash Green, Ash, Normandy, Flexford, Ash Vale — every one of these on the runs that bring us across to Wyke itself, a rural village.

Not on the list? It tells you nothing. The places above are simply the nearest few, and the majority of locations around Surrey have a page of their own elsewhere on the site. Assuming is the mistake to skip, especially on a border or somewhere your phone goes wrong. Contact us to check.

Look at our map for the patch shown here. Every bit of it is ground our engineers cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never drive your vehicle anywhere.

Stopped on the roadside anywhere around Wyke?

Not everyone gets a chance to pull over anywhere safe. Set off, then noticed? Landed by the verge beside Guildford Road, or parked in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That is a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Whether you stay by the motor or keep away from it hangs on whether sitting nearby looks safe. Don't start up your motor to nurse it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mixture further into your fuel system. Carrying on causes your car far more harm than a van heading out to a tricky spot, and that is no problem for us.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

This is where the M3 comes in, under 5 miles out of Wyke. Lost power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the signs when they come, instead of a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Get off at the first safe exit, turn off, and don't start it to reposition. Long trip? Anything approaching the under 50 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the mixture. Say that on the phone, because it alters what goes in the van.

Wyke itself

Wyke is a small village in Surrey, situated inland at an elevation of around 80 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Wyke lies approximately 30 miles from London and is close to nearby places such as Ash Green, Ash, and Normandy. Wyke has a population of around 555 residents and is near the city of Chichester, which is about 29 miles away. Wyke remains a quiet residential community with a rural character.

What comes next when we reach you in Wyke

  • We ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has the motor run? Those answers change what the work really is.
  • We drain that tank of all the polluted mixture.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.
  • We put fresh diesel in and bleed your system.
  • After it is fired up, our technicians check it runs properly on new diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. There's no need for a workshop at any point, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it's noticed soon, permanent damage is very rare.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Wyke is a distinct matter

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening rule is the same — never fire it up — but this fault isn't. The lubrication a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and residue.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Wyke page. Both are ours to deal with.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Wyke?

Honestly, no single price belongs on a page like this. This job varies. Here's what varies it:

  • Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the big one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much that tank takes.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.
  • Where your vehicle is, and whether a van can safely reach and work on it.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and if it has run. Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Things our technicians hear about petrol in diesel around Wyke

Fuel drains on a Wyke petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a big share of this happens. Often, provided the site consents: BP, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something we answer on the spot.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It hinges on the ratio rather than the litres, and much more on whether your engine has run. What decides how much work is needed is if that mixture has been sucked through the system — since even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving shifts the issue along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you is not restarting it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and rinsing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind replaces. Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

No. Our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.

Still with your vehicle?

Keep the engine turned off.

Turn it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and stationary, a car is in the best place available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
