Wythall: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Do not turn on the motor. If the fuel is still inside that tank and the engine has not yet been started, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires — and that is determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, across Wythall and the remainder of Worcestershire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Our technicians will tell you what the following stage will be. Ring us — it goes before all else.
The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Don't fire it up. Turned on all the same? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle generally will not run, and so the driver stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off fine, for a couple of miles. Most people get that backwards. It's not all right — the fuel system is grinding every mile you drive.
- Flicking your ignition on frequently primes the system, and priming is what draws petrol out of the tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition off.
- Do not weaken it. Diesel poured on top gets rid of nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.
- Our team would sooner drive to a difficult location than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is simpler to sort than a motor that has not moved. On the verge on A435, that means hazards on and leave the car.
- Have your position prepared before you ring. A postcode that starts B47 6 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between our van showing up and a van circling.
- Ring 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, roughly how many litres, plus if the motor has run. Those three details determine the full visit.
Tonight, please, not Monday. Running it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has sent real quantity through the pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return journey would about double the figure to no purpose. The Volkswagen Golf can stay outside the nearest station perfectly well. Phone from the platform if easier; standing over us while our technicians work is not necessary.
Each start primes that fuel system and pulls more of the blend out of that tank and toward your pump — which is why a vehicle shunted twice into a roomier spot has gradually turned into a worse job than one left precisely where it stopped. So when our engineers cannot work alongside your diesel Renault Megane, we shift the vehicle without running it. None of that is fuss about a couple of seconds of running. Car parks like the one at Spar our technicians visit often, and the fuel is hardly ever the difficult part: that bay is. Cars either side, a trolley shelter behind, sometimes a height barrier at the entrance deciding whether a van gets to you at all. Tell us how boxed in you are, and which way the vehicle faces.
Out there fine, back sluggish. If that was the drive to Shawbrook Spinney, look at the tank. Diesel gets thinned by petrol, and thin fuel slips past the close gaps meant to build injection pressure — so every additional mile your diesel Ford Focus covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, turn off, call us.
Rattling? Lumpy idle? White smoke, throttle gone limp? That's your misfuelled BMW X1, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, possibly near Hollywood Christian Life Centre, then leave the restarting alone.
What takes place next is the issue. Your engine at once sucks the petrol left waiting in the fuel filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, since draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put fresh diesel in, someone certain will tell you — and that advice is half true, as do it to a diesel Volvo XC60 parked up, War Memorial say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound reasonable. Call us instead. Our technicians flush your system and take your filter off where the car has a serviceable one, and that's the difference between your car being put right and the car only starting.
Draining petrol from the diesel on the forecourt
Plenty of the work starts at a forecourt, so a fair chunk of that is completed there. Still at Esso? Then that is usually where it takes place. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the site.
Nowhere else but the forecourt can this be stopped with the motor still unrun. The few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the keys settle how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as the tank. It is not a disaster, and our technicians can still put it right where the vehicle stands.
The attendants will usually help you roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump so the next customer can get past. It is worth doing. Rolling it four spaces doesn't justify cranking it.
Coverage in Wythall
Inkford, Grimes Hill, Shawbrook, Tanners Green, Drakes Cross — all of them on our trips that take us over to Wythall itself, a rural village.
If yours isn't on the list that does not mean we never come — there are pages for most locations across Worcestershire, and the ones listed above are merely the immediate neighbours. Phone and ask rather than presuming, above all if you are on the boundary or anywhere a satnav struggles with.
The patch this page spans is on this map. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of it is ground we cover, and none of that requires your vehicle to travel to us.
Stuck on the roadside near Wythall
Not everybody finds a decent place to pull over. Set off, then realised? Landed on the verge beside Middle Lane, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards on? That's a common call here. Not an odd one.
Out of your car while it's not sensible to be in it, beside it if it is. Never start up the motor to nurse the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mix further into your fuel system. However tricky the location, it is no trouble for us to come to it, and that is a lot better for your car than pressing on.
A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?
Here is where the M42 comes in — under 3 miles away from Wythall. Lost power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, instead of a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.
The next safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. Long run? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the contamination. Say that on the call, as it alters what goes in the van.

Once our technicians reach you around Wythall: what happens
- Our technicians check what went in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The replies alter the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.
- The tainted mixture is drawn out of your tank.
- Fuel lines are rinsed through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.
- New diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.
- Once it's started, we make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.
After that it's ready to set off. All of it is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted soon, permanent damage is very rare.
A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Wythall
The problem isn't the same, though the first step is — do not fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol. The lubrication a fuel system depends on is stripped away by petrol, which thins your diesel. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and residue in its place.
Both are ours. There's a separate Wythall page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.
What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Wythall
Our technicians can't put one figure on this page truthfully, because the job is not one job. What moves it:
- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
- Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.
- Whether a technician can safely reach your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your car is.
The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range. For your car at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, works too.
Petrol in diesel: frequent queries around Wythall
I am on a forecourt in Wythall. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?
Yes, and it's where a fair share of this work takes place. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like JET is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear whether working there's possible.
Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?
Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and far more than either, it counts if anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through the system.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. Now what?
Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of the tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable a lot more frequently than motorists assume.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to stay off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. It belongs to a different fault from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back. Later on? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.
Still with your car?
Leave the car turned off.
Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it afterwards. A parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than motorists fear.
