Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Wyton?

Never fire up the motor. If the fuel is still in your tank and your engine has not yet turned over, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes — and that is decided in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, all over Wyton and the rest of Cambridgeshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Call us so we shall tell you what comes next before you attempt any more.

The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't crank it — and do not believe it if it does start. Here is the thing motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine fed diesel usually just will not run, so the motorist stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, idles and drives off just fine for a couple of miles. It is not fine. It is wearing the fuel system as you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the car's ignition stays off as well — turn it on and you often prime that system, and that's petrol leaving that tank for precisely those parts.
  • Do not water down it. Diesel poured on top clears nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • Sit tight if it's safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Splash Lane, anywhere — an awkward location for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to handle than a car that never moved.
  • Check where you are before calling. A postcode that starts PE28 2, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than arriving.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what went in, about how many litres, and if your car has run. These three facts settle the whole job.

Removing petrol from your diesel at the forecourt

Most of this work starts at a forecourt, meaning a big share of it ends up finished at one. If you are still on the forecourt at the nearest petrol station, that's typically where this drain gets done — our technicians work on station forecourts routinely, with the station's agreement.

Before your engine has started — the forecourt is the one location this ends up stopped. Fuel sucked out of the tank and through the filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the engine is fired up and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and the lines along with that tank. That is still not a calamity, and our engineers put it right where the car stands. What decides it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after your receipt was read.

The attendants will normally help you wheel the vehicle clear of the pump so the next driver can get by. That is worth doing. Cranking the car to roll four vehicle lengths isn't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Wyton

Simple, these ones, and the reason is the distance: a mile at gentle throttle uses hardly any of it. Petrol into a diesel BMW 3 Series somewhere around Wyton, a boot packed with shopping, and you sat at Co-op Food — ring us. Getting out of that spot is never worth another start. That tank gets cleared where it waits, the lines rinsed, new diesel in, and you drive away.

Hazards on. Ignition off. Call us. It is twenty to nine at the gates of Houghton Primary School, you're late, and the till receipt shows unleaded — and even though three miles in your Nissan Qashqai seems like nothing, fuel gets supplied to demand, and a hurried dash needs plenty of it.

Nothing gets worse while it waits. Whatever your diesel Audi A3 did on the way to California Wood, it's doing none of that now: the pump isn't turning. So take your time — but don't drive the car home to buy yourself any.

Leave the Ford Kuga close to St Marys Centre then phone us. We're blunt about not driving on since a worn-out pump sheds, and what it loses travels onward with your fuel to the injectors further along.

It got a couple of streets and stopped. The throttle went dead, your idle turned ragged, and your diesel Peugeot 208 is now waiting close to Potto Brown. That deadness is the fuel failing to build pressure fully instead of the engine packing up — and because there is no warning light for it, vehicles in that position typically get driven again before anyone rings. Do not. Switch it off and call us.

Wyton plus the towns near it

Wyton is a village, so our team are out to the town and to the areas by it on the same journeys: Houghton, Hemingford Abbots, Hartford, Hemingford Grey and Newtown.

If yours isn't on that list it does not mean we never come — there are separate pages for most locations across Cambridgeshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the nearest neighbours. Call us and ask rather than presuming — boundaries above all, and anywhere your phone might get wrong.

The patch this page covers appears on this map. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of it is ground our engineers work on, and none of that asks your vehicle to move to us.

Stuck on the roadside somewhere around Wyton?

Some drivers get no safe place to pull in whatsoever. Set off, then noticed? Ended up by the verge of Huntingdon Road, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards on? That's a common call here. Not an unusual one.

Okay right there? Stay beside it. Not okay? Step out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that mixture further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. We will take the van to an inconvenient spot without any trouble, and for your car that's far better than driving on.

Run it already? Pull over, then read below

under 10 miles from Wyton, the local A1(M) is what counts now. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power drains away, the idle turns lumpy, and there may be smoke.

The next sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Long drive? Anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the phone, since it changes what goes in our van.

All about Wyton

Wyton is a small village in Cambridgeshire, situated on the banks of the River Great Ouse at an elevation of around 11 metres. Wyton lies near the cities of Cambridge and Huntingdon, with neighbouring villages including Houghton, Hemingford Abbots, and Hartford. Wyton has a population of approximately 546 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing.

What we do when we reach you around Wyton

  • Three things get established before any price — your fuel that was put in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • Away goes the tainted mixture.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that created any of this.
  • Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
  • The motor is turned on and checked to confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away. All of it is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Wyton?

The fault is not the same, though the first rule is — do not fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol thins the diesel and strips the protection the system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Wyton has its own page with the details — including why it is frequently the more serious of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Wyton

Our engineers can't put one figure on this page frankly, since the job is not one job. What changes it:

  • This is the big one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that proportion.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can safely get to your car and work on it, which rests on where the vehicle is.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the amount, and if it has run. For your car at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, works too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Wyton drivers

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Wyton?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair share of this gets done. Routinely, provided the site consents: BP, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that spot is something we answer on the spot.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It rests on the proportion rather than the litres, and much more on whether your engine has run. What decides how much work is required is if that mix has been pulled through the fuel system — since even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Driving takes the issue along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a change and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to stay off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

Is the vehicle still with you?

Turned off is how the car remains.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off and keep it off. A stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than people fear.
