Petrol in Diesel

Y-Ffrith: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on the engine as yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a motor requires while the fuel is still sitting in the tank and the engine has not turned over, which is why it is the coming few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to your car wherever it has stopped in Y-Ffrith or the remainder of Denbighshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there. Just one ring to us will be plenty: our technicians shall show you what follows from here. Try this straight away.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

  • Never start the car. Started anyway? Then do not trust it. Diesel in a petrol car normally cannot run, and so the driver stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off happily, for several miles. Drivers get that backwards. It's not okay — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you drive.
  • Switching your ignition on often primes that system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the ignition alone.
  • That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It won't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a fuller tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay put if it is sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Brig Y Don, anywhere — a tricky spot for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to deal with than a vehicle that never shifted.
  • Before you dial, gather your location. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode starting LL19 7 — that is what decides whether our van turns up or circles.
  • What went in, approximately how many litres, and if your car has run — those three facts settle the entire call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

How many miles you travelled is what our engineers ask about, not how long the motor has been sitting — and here's why. Diesel has two jobs on its way through an engine: it burns, and before burning it greases its high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first only. So a hurried top-up on the drive in, it dawning on you at about eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Golf parked at Prestatyn since quarter past eight shows those couple of miles were covered with the pump running on a liquid drained of a great deal of its protection. Phone and keep the car precisely where it stands.

Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel Renault Clio, a few litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, turned off outside Lidl now. Time elapsed is not the thing we need. Fuel pulled by the pump is.

A passer-by will advise you to move the vehicle out of that gateway and sort it out later. Don't. A wrongly fuelled diesel BMW 3 Series on the zig-zags outside the local primary school is a nuisance; the same motor fired up three more times to be helpful is a fuel system instead of a tank. Each restart primes the fuel lines and drags more petrol through your filter and into the pump. Stay put, let them complain, then call us.

Our engineers purge the lines instead of only emptying your tank, and the reason is that thinned fuel has already got to your filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The hop genuinely helps — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Mercedes C-Class parked up by Festival Gardens a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Ring us and leave it off.

Authorisation first, where there is a hire firm or a company behind the car — some agreements insist on it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, ring us about your diesel Peugeot 3008 close to North Wales Bowling Centre. You will not know how full the tank was. Hardly anybody does, two days into a vehicle, and it gets worked out on site regardless. Our technicians ask since the harm petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a few litres in an almost empty tank make a much stronger blend than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is built to resist igniting under pressure, which is precisely what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the motor rattles and smokes and flattens off.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Y-Ffrith

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

A good part of this work gets finished at a pump, since that is where it often kicks off. Still at Murco? Then that is usually where it happens. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the site.

Before the engine has run — a forecourt is the only setting the mistake gets halted. Fuel drawn out of your tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when your engine is started and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the fuel lines together with that tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and our engineers put it right where your car sits. What determines it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

Clear of the pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you push it. Well worth it. Cranking it just for four vehicle lengths? Never.

Y-Ffrith and the towns near it

Prestatyn, Meliden, Woodland Park, Bryniau, Tan-yr-allt — each of them on our journeys that take us over to Y-Ffrith too, a residential suburb.

Not on that list? It tells you nothing. The places above are only the closest few, and the majority of towns around Denbighshire have a page of their own somewhere on the site. Call us and check rather than guessing, above all when you're on a boundary or anywhere your phone gets wrong.

The patch this page covers is on the map. We work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and your car doesn't need to travel to us.

Y-Ffrith: broken down wherever you pulled up

Not everybody gets a chance to stop anywhere sensible. If you noticed after setting off and ended up along the verge on Oldgate Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that is a common call for us rather than an unusual one.

Safe there? Sit with it. Not safe? Get out and clear of it. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the catch: restart the vehicle to reach somewhere better and the mixture goes further into the system with every mile covered. However awkward the spot, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that is far better for your car than carrying on.

Run it already? Pull over, and check this

This is where the Moreton Spur comes in — under 15 miles from Y-Ffrith. It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's smoke, a rough idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Pull off at the first safe exit, switch off, and don't restart the car to move it. It changes what our engineers bring, so mention it when you ring: on a longer run — anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors.

A little about Y-Ffrith

Y-Ffrith is a coastal suburban area in Denbighshire, situated near the towns of Prestatyn and Meliden. Y-Ffrith lies at a low elevation of around 10 metres, close to the Irish Sea coast. Y-Ffrith has a mix of housing types, but detached homes are particularly prevalent in the area.

What we do when our technicians reach you around Y-Ffrith

  • Our technicians establish what went in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The responses shape the work, which is why we ask before pricing.
  • The tank gets emptied completely.
  • Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever remains afterwards is not the thing that started the trouble.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • Once it is fired up, we confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

That leaves your car ready to pull away. Lasting damage is very rare when it has been spotted early, and as all of this is done where the car is, it never needs to go to a garage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Y-Ffrith?

Do not start it: that opening step applies whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this issue itself. The lubrication a fuel system depends on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

AdBlue removal around Y-Ffrith has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's frequently the more serious of the two. Our engineers handle both.

Y-Ffrith costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Frankly, no single price fits on a page like this. The job varies. Here is what moves it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that ratio.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can safely reach your vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.

Tell us your car, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range. If it isn't urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel: frequent queries around Y-Ffrith

Fuel drains on a Y-Ffrith petrol station forecourt

A fair share of this work gets done there, so yes. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Tesco is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there's possible.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Pull in somewhere safe, turn off, and keep the vehicle off. Driving is what takes the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is recoverable much more often than motorists assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a modification and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave it turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct fault and it does not put back what petrol has thinned. Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the vehicle is, we drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.

Standing next to it?

Keep the car turned off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, switch off, then let it remain that way. This is recoverable from a lot more regularly than motorists assume, and a parked, cold motor is the best position to be in.
