Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Yiewsley? Don't Start It

Don't fire up your engine. If the fuel is still inside your tank and the motor has not turned over, a tank drain is almost always all it takes — and that gets decided in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, across Yiewsley and the rest of Greater London, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. Phone before everything else happens, so you will know what comes after that.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

  • While you drive, your pump and your injectors suffer. This is why you don't start the car, and why you don't believe it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel specifically — the bit people get wrong — is that it drives off fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally will not run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Leave your ignition be too. Diesel has two tasks: it burns, and before it burns it protects that high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Turning the ignition on is often enough to prime that system, which moves the petrol out of your tank then into just those components.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice presumes — so don't tip diesel on top to dilute it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay still if it is wise to. Hazards on, motor off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on High Street, anywhere — a difficult place for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to deal with than a vehicle that never moved.
  • Our van showing up rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode starting UB7 7, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Keep both prepared before you ring.
  • What was put in, about how much, plus whether the motor has fired — these three details decide the whole job. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Removing petrol from your diesel on a forecourt

It starts at a forecourt, mostly. Regularly the job wraps up on site as well. Still at Shell? Then that is normally where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the owner.

Nowhere except a forecourt can it be stopped with the engine still untouched. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still deal with it where it is. It does mean the lines and the filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the key.

Move it out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they usually will. The next driver gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Cranking it over four car lengths? Not a chance.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Yiewsley

Service around Yiewsley

These same runs bring us to Cowley Peachey, Little Britain, Cowley Peachy, West Drayton and Colham Green along with Yiewsley, which is a small village.

We do come. Those names above are only the closest neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of locations around Greater London, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Ring us to enquire rather than assuming, especially where you're on the boundary or anywhere your satnav gets wrong.

The area this page includes is on our map. All of that is ground our engineers serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You do not move your vehicle anywhere.

Each restart primes the lines and drags more petrol past the fuel filter then into the pump. So a misfilled diesel Peugeot 308 on the zig-zags by St Matthew's CofE Primary School is an inconvenience, while the same motor fired up three more times to be polite is a fuel system rather than a tank. Someone will tell you to move the car out of the gateway and deal with it later. Don't. Leave it there, let everyone complain, then ring us.

Risk the drive home from George & Dragon? No. It will start and it will drive off perfectly well, which is the problem — a diesel on a diluted tank runs normally while grinding the components your fuel should be lubricating. Park the Nissan Qashqai then phone.

Stop somewhere safe, turn off and ring us. Happy on the way out to Skate Park, sluggish on the way back? Then look at the tank. Petrol dilutes diesel; runnier fuel slips past the precision components that build injection pressure; and the further the diesel BMW 5 Series drove, the less of that pressure it held.

Rarely the issue, the spot. On-street is the commonest location we work, and a narrow parking spot is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you call from near Yiewsley Parish War Memorial, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can park next to without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then your Vauxhall Astra gets cleared, the filter changed where a serviceable one exists, the fuel lines purged and fresh fuel put through the whole circuit — as by now the worst of that is in the lines, not that tank.

Petrol in a diesel does its damage as a proportion, which is the reason our engineers ask at all: the same few litres sitting in an almost empty tank make a far stronger blend than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger mix rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Almost no one knows how full your tank was in a motor collected two days ago, and we work that out there. Do call the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to authorise the work, and that is far faster settled before than after. Then ring us about the Citroen C3 by St Matthew's.

Stuck on the roadside near Yiewsley

Not everyone finds a decent spot to pull over. If you realised after setting off and ended up on the verge on Fairfield Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that is a routine call for us and not an unusual one.

Wait by the car while it is wise to be there, and out of it when it isn't. Do not fire it up to reach a safer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that mixture deeper into the fuel system. We will send our van to an awkward spot without any trouble, and for your car that is a lot better than carrying on.

Driven it already? Stop, then read this

under 3 miles from Yiewsley, your M25 is what counts now. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power ebbs away, the idle goes uneven, and there may be smoke.

Pull off at the next safe exit, switch off, and do not start the vehicle to reposition. On a longer drive — anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you phone. It affects what our engineers bring.

Yiewsley itself

Yiewsley is a locality in west London, situated on the Grand Union Canal at an elevation of around 35 metres. Yiewsley lies approximately 14.8 miles from central London and is near the neighbouring areas of Cowley Peachey and Little Britain. Yiewsley is predominantly composed of flat dwellings, reflecting its urban character. Yiewsley has a population of around 6857 residents.

What our technicians do when our engineers arrive with you in Yiewsley

  • We find out what got in, how much, and if your engine has run. The responses alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing.
  • Out goes the polluted fuel.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.
  • Our engineers pour fresh diesel in and bleed the system.
  • It's fired up with clean diesel in it, and our technicians check that it's running smoothly.

The car is then ready for you to pull away. All of it is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted soon, long-term damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Yiewsley?

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening instruction is unchanged — don't crank it — but the issue isn't. The lubrication a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Yiewsley page. Both are ours to deal with.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Yiewsley?

Our technicians can't put one number on this page honestly, since this job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that proportion.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and whether your motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. For your car at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, works too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Yiewsley motorists

I am on a forecourt around Yiewsley. Can you drain the car here?

Much of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the station's agreement our technicians attend Gulf and the other forecourts around town all the time.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving shifts the trouble along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you is not restarting the car.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It's not a modification, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores. Your pump still has to live with it, as the tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Wherever your car is, we drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer does not come into it.

Is the car still with you?

Shut off is the way the car stays.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, turn off, and let the vehicle stay that way. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.

Emptying misfuelled cars, Yiewsley and the rest of Greater London, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
