Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ystrad? Don't Start It

With that tank still holding the fuel and your engine not yet started, almost every job requires only a drain, so leave your engine off. That outcome is decided in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that went in. Across Ystrad and the remainder of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. One ring our way is sufficient: we shall explain what comes next. Try this right away.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

  • Never crank it. Turned on all the same? Then do not rely on it. Diesel in a petrol motor typically can't run, and so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off normally, for a few miles. Motorists get that muddled. It is not fine — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you drive.
  • Leave your ignition alone also. Diesel does two jobs: it ignites, and before it combusts it protects the high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Turning your ignition on is usually enough to prime that system, which moves that petrol out of your tank then into precisely those parts.
  • Do not dilute it. Diesel tipped on top clears nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • A vehicle that hasn't moved is the simplest one to handle, so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Danycoed? Hazards on, and leave the vehicle there. An awkward place suits us better than a started engine.
  • Before you dial, get your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode beginning CF41 7 — that is what settles whether our van turns up or circles.
  • What went in, roughly how much, plus if the engine has fired — the three replies settle your whole call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Petrol in a diesel Renault Megane, left at Ystrad Rhondda since this morning? The afternoon has lost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is inert. It was the drive in that sucked weakened diesel through the pump. Ring us before you move the car.

We will get to you, drain the tank, clean your fuel lines then put new diesel in so you can head home. So if petrol went into your diesel Volkswagen Passat around Ystrad and you're stranded at Asda with a boot loaded with shopping, call us — and never fire it up once more to get out of that bay. A mile or so at easy throttle pulls very little of it, so those are usually the straightforward jobs.

Twenty to nine outside the local primary school, already late, and your receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Hazards on, engine off, phone us. Three miles in the Audi A4 sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump delivers fuel to demand — and a rushed morning run asks for plenty.

Phoning from near Ystrad Old Age Pensioners Association? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the vehicle it is on. Room for a van next to you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The place itself scarcely matters: on-street is where we work most, and we'd much rather have a tight bay than a vehicle a person has driven somewhere simpler. Then it's a drain for the Vauxhall Astra, a filter change where there's one worth changing, lines purged, fresh fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of it is in your lines and not the tank.

No warning exists for this, which is why vehicles in that position generally get driven a second time before somebody calls. Please don't be one of them. The throttle went dead and the idle turned uneven after a few streets, and the diesel Kia Sportage is now resting by St Stephen's Church Hall. Softness there means fuel that cannot build pressure properly rather than an engine failing. Turn off. Call us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Ystrad

Can petrol be pumped from a diesel at a forecourt?

A big chunk of the job is finished at the pump, because that is where it often starts. The drain usually takes place on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the station's agreement, that is a spot our engineers work, and routinely.

At a garage, it gets halted with the engine never fired, and nowhere else manages that. The few seconds between checking your receipt and going for your key settle how much requires cleaning. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter require flushing as well as that tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where your car is.

The staff will generally offer to wheel the vehicle away from the pump so the next driver can get by. It is worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a restart.

Areas we cover near Ystrad

Ystrad is a residential suburb, and so our technicians go out to it and to the areas by it on the same rounds: Llwynypia, Penrhys, Gelli, Pontygwaith and Stanleytown.

There are separate pages for nearly all towns around Rhondda Cynon Taf, and the ones mentioned above are merely the immediate neighbours — so yours being absent from the list means nothing at all about whether we come. On a boundary, or anywhere your satnav misreads? Contact us to ask instead of assuming.

That map is the patch the page includes. Your car never needs to move to us. We operate across all of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stuck on the roadside around Ystrad

The opportunity to stop somewhere suitable doesn't come to everyone. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Old Pen-Rhys Road since you worked it out after setting off — we take that call so often that it is the usual kind.

Stay with your car when it's wise to sit inside, and out of the car when it isn't. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that blend further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better. We'll bring the van to an inconvenient location without any bother, and for the car that's a lot better than carrying on.

Run it already? Stop, and read this

under 10 miles from Ystrad, the local M4 is what counts here. A misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are generally a loss of power, a lumpy idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.

The next sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer run — anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors, and say so when you ring. It changes what our engineers bring.

What happens when we reach you around Ystrad

  • Three things get established before any quote — your fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • The tainted mixture comes out of your tank.
  • Fuel lines are flushed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.
  • Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.
  • It is fired up with new diesel in it, and our engineers check that it's running correctly.

That has the car ready to set off. There is no need for a garage at any point, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it is spotted soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Ystrad?

Never fire it up: that opening step stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this problem itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the protection the system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Ystrad page. Both are ours to deal with.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Ystrad

Our technicians cannot put one figure on this page honestly, because this job isn't one job. What changes it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much the tank can hold.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is safe for our van.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm and not as a range. If it is not urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Petrol in diesel: everyday queries in Ystrad

I am on a forecourt in Ystrad. Can you drain the car here?

Yes, and it is where a large portion of this work gets done. Our technicians work at Asda and the other forecourts locally all the time, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mixture pulled through it.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and leave it off. Driving is what takes the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's recoverable much more commonly than people fear, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the car.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It's not an alteration, so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Your pump still has to cope with it, since the tank still has petrol in it later on.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You do not need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Do not turn the car back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car later. This is recoverable from much more often than drivers assume, and a still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
