Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Chrysler Grand Voyager?

We'd ask you to leave your engine off if you have put petrol in a diesel Chrysler Grand Voyager and not started it yet, and that counts for moving it off the forecourt as well. With your engine kept off, that petrol remains where it is in your tank, and in the majority of cases a fuel drain is all your Grand Voyager requires.

There is no need to move your Chrysler Grand Voyager off the forecourt, or from any other place where it came to a stop, because this drain is done by Petrol in Diesel wherever your vehicle stands. Ring us before you try anything on your own and we will talk you through it.

The first steps for petrol in a diesel Grand Voyager

  • Do not turn on your engine, even though a diesel Grand Voyager will generally run with petrol inside your tank. It may feel fine for a time, and that's how drivers frequently drive away without noticing something is wrong.
  • Fuel can be drawn to the injectors even before the engine has fired, since on many diesel engines your ignition on its own primes the fuel pump. Leave the ignition off as well.
  • Topping up with diesel to thin it is a bad idea, even with super unleaded, which counts as petrol as well. The fuel tank in the Grand Voyager holds up to 76 litres, and each litre of diesel added is more contaminated fuel for us to empty.
  • A vehicle blocking a pump can be put in neutral and rolled out of the way, and the forecourt staff are generally glad to help.
  • If the badge gives the exact version, for example the Grand Voyager 2.5 TD SE, give it when you call 0333 366 0103. Let us know as well which Grand Voyager you drive and where it is, roughly how much petrol was put in and whether the engine has run.

Running on wrong fuel in your Chrysler Grand Voyager

The motor isn't affected by wrong fuel in your Chrysler Grand Voyager until it's drawn from your tank, and starting the engine is what draws it out. Inside a diesel motor, the fuel lubricates your injectors and the injection pump on its way through. Driving any distance on that mixture is what can do harm, as petrol thins the diesel and takes that protection away.

Pull over somewhere safe and switch off when your Grand Voyager has already been driven. Even so, we can get all the contaminated fuel out, by emptying your tank and then rinsing your fuel lines and the filter. As long as it's flushed out properly after being caught soon, it very rarely leaves long-term damage.

The fuel tank capacity of the Chrysler Grand Voyager

If you fuelled up while the tank was close to empty, the same couple of litres make up more of your fuel in there, and the risk rests on that proportion, so the capacity of your tank matters.

Depending on the variant, the Chrysler Grand Voyager has a tank of 75 to 76 litres.

Our data put the biggest tank in the Grand Voyager 2.5 TD SE and the smallest in the Grand Voyager 2.8 CRD.

Chrysler Grand Voyager 2.5 CRD75 litres
Chrysler Grand Voyager 2.5 TD SE76 litres
Chrysler Grand Voyager 2.8 CRD75 litres

Check the badging on your boot lid, which normally gives the variant, then tell us what it says when you ring.

AdBlue in a diesel Chrysler Grand Voyager by mistake

To clean up their exhaust, some diesel cars use AdBlue, a blend of water and urea that is put in its own tank through its own filler. The key should be kept out of the ignition when you've got AdBlue in a diesel Chrysler Grand Voyager through the wrong filler, and that covers shifting the car.

AdBlue sinks to the base of your tank, where your pump draws its fuel from, as it won't blend with diesel. Being largely water, it cannot ignite and leaves the fuel pump with no protection, and your diesel in a tank of up to 76 litres doesn't thin it the way it would petrol.

However small the quantity, some of it is sucked into the line. When the water dries off, the urea forms crystals in the system, including your filter and injectors, and it corrodes the metalwork it touches.

The same fuel flap frequently covers both fillers, and where your Grand Voyager has an AdBlue filler, it might well be next to the diesel one. AdBlue caps are normally blue and accept a much smaller nozzle than diesel.

What we do in a fuel drain on your Chrysler Grand Voyager

There's no garage involved, as we carry out a fuel drain on your Chrysler Grand Voyager at the car itself. We start by finding out what went in and whether your motor has run, then drain the tank, which on the Grand Voyager takes up to 76 litres. Then we flush your fuel pipes and the filter and fill up with clean diesel, and your system is primed before we fire it up.

When we've finished, your Grand Voyager is running on fresh diesel and you can drive it away.

Handling AdBlue removal from a diesel Chrysler Grand Voyager

AdBlue removal from a diesel Chrysler Grand Voyager takes the same steps as draining petrol. We clear crystals out of the pipes as well if the Grand Voyager has been run, and change the fuel filter if needed, as AdBlue collects in the base of your tank rather than mixing in and may leave them there.

AdBlue removal, as we use it here, is about AdBlue that was put in the wrong filler and has to come out of the diesel tank. It does not cover taking out or switching off the AdBlue system on the car.

Pricing a fuel drain on the Chrysler Grand Voyager

The work changes from one job to the next, so we do not publish a fixed quote. The biggest things that affect it are these:

  • whether anybody has started or driven the Grand Voyager, the thing that matters most
  • the size of the tank, set against how much was put in
  • whether it was AdBlue and not petrol
  • the location of the Grand Voyager and how easily we can reach it with our van

With those details over the phone, we can tell you what the job is likely to involve.

Petrol in a diesel Chrysler Grand Voyager: questions

The Chrysler Grand Voyager fuel tank capacity: how many litres?

Between 75 and 76 litres depending on the version, and the table above shows each one.

Is it OK to add diesel after just a little petrol in my Grand Voyager?

We'd advise against it. That petrol remains in the fuel system when you drive off, because adding diesel only reduces its proportion and takes out none of it. A fuel drain takes all of that out, and with a modest amount that's generally all the Grand Voyager requires.

Does my Grand Voyager need to be taken to the Chrysler dealer?

No. We are an independent business and have no connection with Chrysler or its dealers, plus we empty and clean the Grand Voyager wherever it is parked, so there's no need to move it anywhere.

Which Grand Voyager I have: does it make a difference?

Knowing your version helps when you phone, as there are 3 diesel versions of the Grand Voyager in our figures.

Is wrong fuel in my Chrysler Grand Voyager covered by my insurance?

Some policies have misfuelling cover and some do not, so it is worth looking at yours. Either way, we come out and empty the car for you.

What happens if I pour diesel in the AdBlue tank of my Grand Voyager?

In that case, too, leave the key out of the ignition. Most vehicles display a warning and go into limp mode if they're driven that way, and the AdBlue system will need emptying. Do say which tank took your diesel when you call.

What should I do if I've already driven my Grand Voyager?

Pull over where it's safe and switch the engine off, then keep it off until we get to you. We empty and clean your fuel system where you are, and when it's caught soon like this, permanent damage is very unusual.
