Petrol in a Diesel Chrysler Voyager, and You've Driven It

Once it's safe, pull in then switch the motor off, then leave it off. Driving on with petrol in a diesel Chrysler Voyager just carries the petrol further in. It's very rare for lasting harm to follow if it's caught early, while it can still be dealt with wherever you've stopped.

Wherever your Chrysler Voyager has ended up, Petrol in Diesel travels out to drain the fuel tank there and clear the petrol out of the system. When we leave, it is running again on fresh diesel.

Symptoms of petrol in a diesel Voyager

A diesel Voyager with petrol inside your tank frequently feels normal at first, so the symptoms usually appear a couple of miles further on. With petrol or AdBlue inside the tank, the following are the ones people usually spot:

  • power falls away, especially as you ask the motor to accelerate
  • the idle turns uneven, or it runs roughly
  • there is more smoke than normal from the tailpipe
  • warning lights come on
  • the motor cuts out then may not restart

The receipt will show what was put in, which means you should look at it if any of these began after you filled up.

Wrong fuel in your Chrysler Voyager: what travelling on it does

Wrong fuel in your Chrysler Voyager stays in the tank till the engine draws it out, and driving is what draws it through your filter, the injection pump then the fuel injectors. Petrol dilutes the diesel fuel that lubricates the fuel pump and the injectors as it runs through them, and driving the Voyager on carries that mixture into more of the system.

That's why it's better to stop as soon as you can than to complete the trip. A vehicle that's stopped soon usually needs nothing more than a drain and a clean. What can cause damage is covering a long distance on tainted fuel.

Fuel drain on a diesel Chrysler Voyager

We come to where you have pulled up

The Voyager does not need moving anywhere. The roadside and outside your home are both places we come to, so it does not need starting or towing.

With your hazards on, stand away from the traffic somewhere safe if the road next to you is fast.

Before you phone 0333 366 0103, have your whereabouts to hand, along with the mileage you travelled and which Voyager it is. It also helps when the badge shows the version, like the Voyager 2.8 CRD.

Fuel drain on your Chrysler Voyager after it has been driven

Next to a drain on the forecourt, a fuel drain on your Chrysler Voyager goes a step further after driving. Draining your fuel tank comes first. After that we open up the fuel lines and flush them through with your filter, so there's no petrol left between the fuel tank and the engine. The system is primed once fresh diesel has gone in, then the engine is started to check it runs properly.

If the motor has been run with AdBlue in a diesel Chrysler Voyager

Driving with AdBlue in a diesel Chrysler Voyager normally brings warning lamps, smoke and uneven running, and the vehicle might go on to stall. As AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, where your fuel pump draws its fuel, it's in your fuel line quickly, and it does not burn or lubricate. The urea crystallises in your filter and the fuel lines as its water evaporates.

AdBlue removal from a diesel Chrysler Voyager after driving

Emptying your tank comes first with AdBlue removal from a diesel Chrysler Voyager that has been run, then the crystals are flushed out of your fuel lines and your fuel filter, with the fuel filter replaced if it needs it.

If your Voyager has a separate AdBlue tank, that's left as it is. This is about fluid in the diesel tank, not taking out or switching off the AdBlue system.

Tanks and engines: Chrysler Voyager fuel tank capacity

The Voyager 2.5 TD SE is at the top end and the Voyager 2.8 CRD at the bottom of the Chrysler Voyager versions, with diesel fuel tanks from 75 to 76 litres.

You'll see TD badging on diesel Voyager versions.

Questions after driving with petrol in a diesel Chrysler Voyager

Is my Voyager ruined?

Almost certainly not. With the vehicle stopped soon and the fuel system drained and flushed wherever you have stopped, which is what we do, lasting harm is uncommon.

Is it OK to drive it home first?

Our advice would be not to. Moving it is not needed, since we can drain the Voyager where it is. Taking it on only carries contaminated fuel further through your system.

It has stalled and won't restart. What should I do?

Please leave it instead of trying again, as each attempt pulls more of that mixture through. We get it started for you after draining and rinsing it, putting clean diesel in and priming your fuel system.

Do you need to know which Voyager I drive?

There are 3 diesel versions of the Voyager, and the badge on the tailgate says which one you have. Knowing that assists us when you call.

Wrong fuel in my Chrysler Voyager: will insurance cover it?

Some policies have misfuelling cover, so it is worth looking at yours after your car is sorted out. We come out either way.
