A couple of litres of wrong fuel in your Citroen C5, and what they mean
How full the tank was when you refuelled sets the proportion of petrol, as wrong fuel in your Citroen C5 mixes with whatever diesel was already there. Up to 71 litres go into the tank. Filling a nearly full one with a few litres of petrol leaves only a small share of petrol in the total, whereas the same quantity in a nearly empty tank is much more of what the motor would take in.
Frequently, drivers want to know at what point that petrol gets to be too much. Whether the motor has been run is the more helpful point to check. Once it runs, your pump pulls the mixture from the tank and pushes it on to the injectors.
Getting it drained is the sensible option no matter what the share is. When the quantity is small, your C5 generally needs nothing more than that.
The engines on the diesel C5
The engine in your C5 shows in the version name on the badge. Note it before you call.
Across the diesel C5 versions in our figures, the badges read HDi.
The C5 Estate 2.2 HDi carries the largest engine at 2.2 litres, and the C5 2.0 HDi the smallest one at 2.0 litres.
Within the C5 versions in the figures are Tourer and Estate ones.
Being unsure which version you have does not matter. Phone anyway, and we will work it out with you.
AdBlue in a diesel Citroen C5
With AdBlue, fuel tank size works differently. With AdBlue in a diesel Citroen C5, your diesel sitting in your tank does not thin it. Being largely water, AdBlue stays separate from the diesel and sinks to the base, which is where the pump pulls from. Even a tiny amount gets into the fuel line.
Nothing in AdBlue burns, and your pump gets no lubrication from it. After its water evaporates, urea is left in the fuel lines and the filter as crystals, and the metal next to it is eaten into.
A separate tank with its own filler carries the AdBlue on certain diesel vehicles, commonly beside the filler for diesel under the same flap. If your C5 has an AdBlue filler, the diesel nozzle is the larger of the two, and the AdBlue cap is normally blue.
A fuel drain on your Citroen C5, step by step
A fuel drain on your Citroen C5 clears the whole tank, whatever its size in your version, and it is carried out where the car is parked. Pumping out the contaminated fuel comes first, then a rinse of the fuel lines and the filter. After that we refill with fresh diesel, prime the fuel system and fire up your engine.
Whether your C5 is still on the station forecourt or left on your driveway doesn't change anything. Once this drain is done it is running on fresh diesel and you can drive it away.
AdBlue removal from a diesel Citroen C5, explained
Clearing your tank totally is where AdBlue removal from a diesel Citroen C5 starts, because AdBlue does not mix in and settles at the base instead. Where your engine has been run, the fuel lines and your filter are cleaned through too, and your fuel filter is replaced if necessary.
What this covers is AdBlue that ended up in your diesel tank, not removing or switching off the AdBlue system on the vehicle.
Pricing a fuel drain on the Citroen C5
The same model can mean very different call-outs, which is why we do not publish a fixed price. What changes it most is whether the C5 has been run or driven, and after that how much was put in against the capacity of your tank, whether it was petrol or AdBlue, and where your car is.
Phone with those facts and we can let you know what this job will take.
Petrol in a diesel Citroen C5: tank questions
Fuel tank capacity of the Citroen C5: how much does it hold?
From 66 to 71 litres according to the version, and each version is listed in the table above.
Does petrol matter less with a larger tank?
Less of the whole is petrol when a few litres go into a larger tank, yet it's still there, and running the motor still carries it to the pump. With your C5 switched off, a drain clears all of that.
Diesel versions of the C5: how many do you cover?
There are 24 diesel C5 versions in our data, and the model name on the badge tells you which row of the table above is yours.
What counts as wrong fuel in my Citroen C5?
It means everything put into your diesel tank that is not diesel, and so petrol of any type, even super unleaded, or AdBlue, which has its own separate tank.
Wherever the Citroen C5 is, can you drain the vehicle?
Yes, wherever it is. Sitting at home or still at the pumps, the car stays put and isn't started, as we come to it.
