Put Petrol in a Diesel Citroen Evasion?
We'd ask you to keep the motor off if you've put petrol in a diesel Citroen Evasion and not run it yet, and that counts for shifting it off the forecourt as well. A fuel drain is generally enough to set your Evasion right, as long as the petrol stays in the tank, which it will whilst your engine is off.
Petrol in Diesel empties misfuelled vehicles where they stand, and your Citroen Evasion can remain at the forecourt or wherever it has come to a stop. Phone us before anything else and let us walk you through it, instead of trying anything on your own.
Petrol in a diesel Evasion: what to do straight away
- Keep your engine off. A diesel Evasion will usually fire up and run with petrol inside the tank, and it can seem fine for a few miles, which explains why drivers commonly drive off without realising anything is amiss.
- Fuel can be drawn to your injectors even before your engine has started, since on a lot of diesel motors the ignition alone primes the fuel pump. Leave your ignition off too.
- Do not fill the remainder of the tank with diesel to thin it. The Evasion takes up to 80 litres, and filling it up simply means more tainted fuel to empty out. Super unleaded counts as petrol here too.
- Ask the forecourt attendants if your car is blocking a pump. They generally help push the vehicle clear after it's in neutral.
- Call 0333 366 0103 with the place your Evasion is and which one it is, the rough volume of petrol that was put in, and whether it has been run. When you can see the exact version on the badge, for example the Evasion 2.0 HDi, that is useful as well.
Wrong fuel in your Citroen Evasion after the engine has run
Whilst it remains in the tank, wrong fuel in your Citroen Evasion doesn't affect your engine. That only begins once it is drawn out, which is what happens when the motor is started. In a diesel engine, the fuel oils your injectors and the injection pump on its way past. Petrol thins your diesel and washes that protection away, and that is why it's driving any distance on that mixture that can cause harm.
Stop in a safe place then switch off when your Evasion has already been on the road. All the same, we can get all the tainted fuel out, by draining your tank and then rinsing the fuel pipes and the fuel filter. Very few vehicles that are caught early and cleaned out thoroughly end up with long-term damage.
Each version of the Evasion is the same here, the Evasion 2.0 HDi SX among them.
Citroen Evasion fuel tank capacity
Since the risk hinges on how much of your fuel is petrol, the size of the tank matters, and a couple of litres in a tank that was nearly empty are more of a problem than the same in a fuller tank.
In our figures, all the diesel variants of the Citroen Evasion use one tank of 80 litres, so the calculation works out the same for each.
| Version | Fuel tank |
|---|---|
| Citroen Evasion 1.9 TD | 80 litres |
| Citroen Evasion 2.0 HDi | 80 litres |
| Citroen Evasion 2.0 HDi SX | 80 litres |
| Citroen Evasion 2.1 Turbo D12 SX | 80 litres |
Finding your diesel Evasion version
Look for the badge on your boot lid, which generally shows the variant, and let us know what it says when you phone.
Diesel models of the Evasion have been sold as HDi and TD.
The smallest engine, 1.9 litres, is on the Evasion 1.9 TD, and the largest, 2.1 litres, is in the Evasion 2.1 Turbo D12 SX.
AdBlue in a diesel Citroen Evasion by accident
AdBlue is a blend of water and urea that some diesel cars use to treat their exhaust, and it has its own tank and filler. If you have AdBlue in a diesel Citroen Evasion because it went in the incorrect filler, don't turn the key, even to move the vehicle.
The fuel pump gets no lubrication whatsoever from AdBlue, which is mainly water and won't ignite. It won't blend with diesel either, and settles to the bottom of the tank, the same location your pump draws from, so a tank of up to 80 litres won't dilute it.
No matter how small the quantity, some of it gets pulled into the line. Once the water dries off, the urea crystallises within the fuel system, including the fuel filter and injectors, and it attacks the metal it rests against.
Look under your fuel flap where the Evasion has an AdBlue filler, because on plenty of vehicles it is right alongside the diesel filler. You can normally spot the AdBlue lid by its blue shade and the far slimmer nozzle it accepts.
What we do for a fuel drain on your Citroen Evasion
Moving the car to a garage is not needed, as a fuel drain on your Citroen Evasion is carried out right at the car. On the Evasion the tank holds up to 80 litres, and we drain all of it once we have checked what was put in and whether your engine has been run. The fuel lines and the filter are cleaned next, then we fill up with clean diesel and prime the fuel system before firing up your motor.
By the time we leave, the Evasion is running on clean diesel once more and all set for you to take away.
How we handle AdBlue removal from a diesel Citroen Evasion
We take the same steps for AdBlue removal from a diesel Citroen Evasion as we do for emptying petrol. Since AdBlue doesn't blend in but settles at the bottom of the tank, running the Evasion on it can form crystals in the lines. Those get rinsed through too, and the filter is swapped where needed.
On this page, AdBlue removal means taking AdBlue back out of a diesel tank it was put into through the wrong filler. Switching off or removing the AdBlue system on a car is not what it means.
A fuel drain on the Citroen Evasion: what it costs
The work changes from one task to the next, so we don't publish a set quote. The chief factors that affect it are these:
- most of all, whether the Evasion has been driven or even started
- how much was put in compared to the size of your tank
- which of the two it was, petrol or AdBlue
- the location of the Evasion and how easily we can reach it with the van
Phone with those details and we will be able to say what's likely to be involved.
Your queries on petrol in a diesel Citroen Evasion
The Citroen Evasion fuel tank capacity: how many litres?
80 litres. The tank is the same capacity whatever version you drive.
I only put a little petrol in my Evasion. Should I top up with diesel?
It is not something we would recommend, as adding diesel does nothing to take out the petrol. It just lowers its proportion, and that petrol is still in the system once you drive off. With just a little petrol, a drain to get all of it out is usually all your Evasion requires.
Is a trip to the Citroen dealer needed for my Evasion?
No. We are independent and have no connection with Citroen or its dealers, and we drain and clean your Evasion wherever it is parked, so there is no need to move it anywhere.
Does it matter which Evasion I own?
Knowing your variant helps when you call, because there are 4 diesel versions of the Evasion in our figures.
Does my insurance cover wrong fuel in my Citroen Evasion?
We'll still come out and drain it for you, either way. Check your insurance anyway, as not every policy has misfuelling cover.
What if I put diesel in the AdBlue tank of my Evasion?
In that case, as well, leave the key out of your ignition. Limp mode and a warning are what the majority of vehicles give you if they're driven like that, and their AdBlue system will need draining. When you ring, tell us which tank your fuel went into.
What should I do if I've already driven my Evasion?
Pull over where it's safe and turn your motor off, then keep it off till we get to you. Lasting damage is very uncommon if it's caught soon like this, plus we drain your fuel system and clean it where you've pulled over.
