Petrol in a Diesel Dodge Nitro? Start With the Tank

The capacity of your fuel tank is one of the first things to know after you have put petrol in a diesel Dodge Nitro, as the share of the fuel that is currently petrol rests on it. The tank size and the engines are set out here for every Dodge Nitro version which we hold figures for.

Once it has happened, the same advice applies whatever the size happens to be. With your engine kept off, call Petrol in Diesel and the vehicle will be emptied where it is.

Dodge Nitro fuel tank capacity, by version

Every version of the Dodge Nitro in our data shares one diesel tank, which holds 70 litres.

Does a little volume of wrong fuel in your Dodge Nitro matter?

Whatever diesel was already inside your tank blends with the wrong fuel in your Dodge Nitro, and how full the tank was when you filled up sets how much of that mixture is petrol. In a tank that takes up to 70 litres, a couple of litres of unleaded added to a nearly full tank makes a minor part of the whole, and the same few litres going into a tank that was nearly empty makes up a much greater share of what the engine would draw.

Frequently, people want to know at what point the petrol gets to be too much. It's more helpful to know whether the motor has been run, as a running motor is what carries that mixture from your tank and through the pump and the fuel injectors.

A fuel drain is the right option no matter what the share, and with a modest quantity it's usually all your Nitro needs.

Engines fitted to the diesel Nitro

The engine in your Nitro shows in the version name on the badge. Note it before you phone.

The motors are each 2.8 litres.

If you're not sure which version you drive, ring all the same and we'll figure it out with you.

AdBlue in a diesel Dodge Nitro

Where AdBlue is concerned, your fuel tank size counts differently. AdBlue is mainly water and doesn't mix with diesel, so with AdBlue in a diesel Dodge Nitro, your diesel around it does nothing to thin it. As it settles to the base of your tank, where the fuel pump draws from, even a small amount gets into your fuel lines.

Nothing in AdBlue combusts, and the pump gets no protection from it. After its water evaporates, urea is left in the fuel lines and the filter as crystals, and the metal next to it corrodes.

The filler for AdBlue, on diesel vehicles that carry it, commonly shares a fuel flap with the diesel one and leads to a second tank. On any Nitro with an AdBlue filler, a blue cap generally marks it, and that cap accepts a narrower pump nozzle than the diesel one.

Fuel drain on your Dodge Nitro

Done where the car is sitting, a fuel drain on your Dodge Nitro clears the entire tank, whatever size it is on your version. Fresh diesel goes in once the contaminated fuel is pumped out and the fuel lines and the fuel filter are flushed, and then your system is primed and the engine started.

Still on the station forecourt or parked on your drive, your Nitro can be emptied just the same. Clean diesel is what it runs on when this drain is finished, and so you can take it away.

AdBlue removal from a diesel Dodge Nitro

AdBlue gathers at the base of the tank instead of mixing in, and so draining it fully is the opening stage of AdBlue removal from a diesel Dodge Nitro. If your engine has been run, we flush the lines and your filter through as well and change the filter if it needs it.

What this covers is AdBlue that ended up in the diesel tank, not removing or disabling the AdBlue system on the vehicle.

What a fuel drain on the Dodge Nitro will cost

The same model can make for quite dissimilar jobs, which is why we don't publish a fixed price. Whether the Nitro has been run or driven affects it most. After that it depends on how much got in against your tank size, whether petrol or AdBlue was put in, and your car's location.

We can explain what's involved in this job when you ring with those details.

Queries on your tank and petrol in a diesel Dodge Nitro

How many litres is the Dodge Nitro fuel tank capacity?

Every version we have figures for uses one tank, and it holds 70 litres.

With a larger tank, is petrol less of a worry?

A bigger tank means a few litres form less of the whole, but the petrol is still there and still gets to the pump as soon as your engine runs. With your Nitro turned off, a drain removes all of it.

Wrong fuel in my Dodge Nitro: what does that cover?

Just diesel goes in the diesel tank. Petrol of every type, super unleaded too, is wrong fuel, and so is AdBlue, which goes in a tank of its own.

Do you come to the Dodge Nitro to drain it?

We do. The vehicle does not need to be moved or started, because we come to it whether it's still at the forecourt or parked at home.
