Tank Sizes and Petrol in a Diesel Ford Fusion
Once you have put petrol in a diesel Ford Fusion, the capacity of its tank is among the earliest things to know, because it determines how much of what is in there is now petrol. We give the tank size on every version of the Ford Fusion which our figures cover on this page, together with the motors it was sold with.
Whatever the size, the advice is no different once it has occurred. Ring Petrol in Diesel with your engine kept off. We will come to you to drain it right where it stands.
Each version in turn: Ford Fusion fuel tank capacity
Every version of the Ford Fusion within our figures uses the same diesel tank, holding 45 litres.
| Version | Fuel tank |
|---|---|
| Ford Fusion 1.4 TDCi | 45 litres |
| Ford Fusion 1.6 TDCi | 45 litres |
Wrong fuel in your Ford Fusion: what a couple of litres amounts to
Whatever diesel was still in your tank mixes with the wrong fuel in your Ford Fusion, and how full it was when you filled up decides how much of that mixture is petrol. In a tank which holds up to 45 litres, a couple of litres of unleaded on top of an almost full tank is a minor part of the total, and the same few litres going into a tank that was almost empty is a much larger share of what the motor would draw.
Drivers often want to know how much petrol counts as too much. Whether the motor has been run is the more helpful point to check. Once it runs, the pump draws that mix from your tank and sends it on to your injectors.
With a modest quantity, a drain is usually all your Fusion needs, and whatever the proportion, having it drained is the safe thing to do.
The engines in the diesel Fusion
Before you call, it's worth reading the version name on the badge, as it shows us which engine your Fusion has.
Our data show TDCi badges on the diesel versions of the Fusion.
In the Fusion 1.6 TDCi the engine is 1.6 litres, and in the Fusion 1.4 TDCi it's 1.4 litres, the smallest of them.
If you are not sure which version you have, call all the same and we will work it out together.
AdBlue in a diesel Ford Fusion
With AdBlue, fuel tank size works differently. If you have got AdBlue in a diesel Ford Fusion, your diesel surrounding it doesn't weaken it, as AdBlue is mainly water and doesn't mix with diesel. It sinks to the bottom of your tank, which is where the fuel pump draws from, and so even a tiny amount reaches the fuel line.
As the water in AdBlue evaporates, the urea left behind crystallises in the lines and the fuel filter and eats into the metalwork next to it, and AdBlue doesn't combust or give the pump any lubrication either.
On some diesel vehicles, AdBlue has a second tank of its own, and its filler commonly sits alongside the diesel one under the same flap. If your Fusion has an AdBlue filler, the diesel nozzle is the larger of the two, and the AdBlue cap is normally blue.
A fuel drain on your Ford Fusion, step by step
Whatever size your tank is on your version, a fuel drain on your Ford Fusion empties the lot, just where the vehicle is standing. Drawing out the contaminated fuel comes first, followed by a rinse of the lines and your fuel filter. Then we top up with clean diesel, prime the system and start the engine.
Parked at home or still at the pumps, your Fusion gets the same drain. When we finish this drain, the car is running on fresh diesel and ready to drive away.
AdBlue removal from a diesel Ford Fusion, explained
AdBlue removal from a diesel Ford Fusion begins with draining your tank entirely, since AdBlue gathers at the bottom instead of mixing in. We also rinse the lines and your filter through once the engine has run, changing the filter where it needs changing.
AdBlue that has gone into your diesel tank is the subject here. Switching off or removing your car's AdBlue system is not part of it.
What a fuel drain on the Ford Fusion costs
The same model can mean quite different call-outs, which is why we do not list a fixed price. The biggest factor is whether anyone has run or driven the Fusion. Then there is the amount that was put in against how big the tank is, which fuel it was, and where the car is now.
With those facts, we can tell you what this job will need when you phone.
Petrol in a diesel Ford Fusion: tank queries
What's the fuel tank capacity of the Ford Fusion?
It holds 45 litres, and each version we have data for shares that tank.
Does a bigger tank make petrol less of a problem?
A larger tank means a few litres form less of the total, but the petrol is still in there and still reaches your pump when the motor runs. With your Fusion switched off, a fuel drain clears all of that.
How many diesel versions of the Fusion do you cover?
Our data cover 2 diesel versions of the Fusion, all set out in the table above, and so you can spot yours there by the name printed on its badge.
Is it wrong fuel in my Ford Fusion if it is not diesel?
Anything apart from diesel in the diesel tank, meaning petrol of every type, super unleaded as well, or AdBlue intended for its own dedicated tank.
Can you drain the Ford Fusion where it is?
We do. The car doesn't need to be moved or switched on, because we travel to it whether it's still on the station forecourt or parked at home.
