Tank Sizes and Petrol in a Diesel Honda Accord

Once you have put petrol in a diesel Honda Accord, the size of its fuel tank is one of the first things to know, because it decides how much of the fuel in there is currently petrol. Each version of the Honda Accord we hold figures for is on this page with its fuel tank size, and the same goes for the motors it came with.

When it has happened, the same advice holds whatever the number happens to be. Keep the engine off and ring Petrol in Diesel, and we'll come over to empty the vehicle where it is.

Each version in turn: Honda Accord fuel tank capacity

65 litres is what the fuel tank takes on each version of the Honda Accord we have data for, as they all use the same fuel tank.

VersionFuel tank
Honda Accord 2.0 TDi65 litres
Honda Accord 2.2i-CDTi65 litres
Honda Accord 2.2i-DTEC65 litres
Honda Accord Tourer 2.2i-CDTi65 litres
Honda Accord Tourer 2.2i-DTEC65 litres

Does a little volume of wrong fuel in your Honda Accord matter?

The proportion of petrol hinges on how full your tank was before you refuelled. That's because wrong fuel in your Honda Accord mixes with whatever diesel is still in there. When a few litres of petrol go into a tank sitting close to empty, they form a far greater share of what the motor would draw. Added to a nearly full tank of up to 65 litres, the same volume is only a small share of the total.

The quantity of petrol that's too much is something motorists frequently wonder about. Running the motor is what takes the blend from your tank and through the pump and the fuel injectors, and so the more useful point to know is if it has run.

A fuel drain is the right course no matter what the share, and with a modest quantity it's generally all your Accord needs.

Engines fitted to the diesel Accord

The version name on your badge tells us which engine your Accord has, so it is worth noting before you ring.

The badges on the diesel versions of the Accord in our figures are CDTI and TDI.

The CDTI badge appears across more of them than any other, while the Accord 2.0 TDi is one that wears the TDI badge instead.

Whatever version it is, the motor is 2.0 litres.

There are Tourer Accord versions in the figures as well.

Phone anyway if you are not certain which version you own, and we will work it out with you.

What happens with AdBlue in a diesel Honda Accord

Where AdBlue is concerned, your tank size counts differently. AdBlue is largely water and doesn't mix with diesel, and so with AdBlue in a diesel Honda Accord, the diesel around it does nothing to dilute it. As it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel pump draws from, even a tiny volume gets into your fuel line.

As the water in AdBlue dries out, the urea left behind crystallises in the lines and the fuel filter and attacks the metal around it, and AdBlue does not burn or give your pump any lubrication either.

On some diesel cars, AdBlue has a separate tank of its own, and its filler often is next to the diesel one under the same fuel flap. If your Accord has one, the AdBlue filler cap is normally blue and fits a narrower nozzle than diesel.

How a fuel drain on your Honda Accord works

Whatever size your tank is on your version, a fuel drain on your Honda Accord clears all of it, just where the vehicle is standing. Drawing out the contaminated fuel comes first, followed by a rinse of the lines and the filter. After that we refill with clean diesel, prime the fuel system and fire up your engine.

It doesn't matter whether your Accord is sitting at the station forecourt or parked on your driveway. Once this drain is finished it is running on clean diesel and you can take it away.

What AdBlue removal from a diesel Honda Accord takes

AdBlue removal from a diesel Honda Accord begins with draining the tank completely, because AdBlue collects at the bottom rather than mixing in. A motor that has run means cleaning your filter and lines through as well, and replacing the fuel filter if it needs it.

This covers AdBlue that has got into the diesel tank. It's not removing or disabling the AdBlue system on your car.

How the price of a fuel drain on the Honda Accord is set

There's no fixed price listed on this page, since jobs on one model can vary quite a lot. Whether the Accord has been started or driven changes it most. After that it depends on how much went in against the fuel tank size, whether petrol or AdBlue was put in, and the car's location.

With those details, we can let you know what the job will need when you call.

Tank questions about petrol in a diesel Honda Accord

What's the fuel tank capacity of the Honda Accord?

It takes 65 litres, and every version we have figures for uses that tank.

Does a bigger tank make petrol less of an issue?

That petrol is still there in a bigger tank, and still reaches the pump as soon as your engine runs, even though a few litres make up less of the total. With your Accord turned off, a drain clears all of it.

How many diesel versions of the Accord do you cover?

Our figures include 5 diesel versions of the Accord, all set out in the table above, so you can pick out yours there by the name shown on its badge.

What counts as wrong fuel in my Honda Accord?

Petrol qualifies whatever the type, super unleaded too, and so does AdBlue that was intended for its own separate tank. Everything other than diesel in the diesel tank is wrong fuel.

Do you come to the Honda Accord to drain it?

Yes, wherever it is. Sitting at home or still at the pump, your car remains where it is and is not started, because we come to it.
