Have You Put Petrol in a Diesel Hyundai Getz?
If you've put petrol in a diesel Hyundai Getz and your engine has not been run, leave it switched off, including to shift it away from the petrol pump. That petrol cannot leave your tank while your motor is off, so your Getz can normally be put right with a drain.
We go to misfuelled cars instead of the other way round, so with Petrol in Diesel the Hyundai Getz remains on the forecourt or wherever it has stopped. We'll go through it with you over the phone, so ring us before attempting anything yourself.
Your first steps with petrol in a diesel Getz
- Drivers frequently drive off without noticing anything is amiss, because a diesel Getz will generally start and run on petrol and can feel normal for the first few miles. So keep the engine off.
- Your ignition has to remain off too, because turning it on sets the fuel pump priming on plenty of diesels, and the pump then pulls fuel from the tank.
- Filling up with diesel to dilute it is a mistake, even with super unleaded, which counts as petrol too. The tank on your Getz holds up to 45 litres, and each litre of diesel put in is more contaminated fuel for us to empty.
- Forecourt attendants will normally help push your vehicle out of the way in neutral if it's in the way of a pump.
- Ring 0333 366 0103 then let us know which Getz you drive and where it is parked, about how much petrol was put in, and whether the engine has been started. Where the exact variant is on the badging, say the Getz 1.5 CRDi VGT, tell us that too.
Wrong fuel in your Hyundai Getz once your engine has been run
Whilst it remains inside your tank, wrong fuel in your Hyundai Getz does not reach your motor. That only begins when it is drawn out, which is what happens when the motor is started. The high-pressure pump and the injectors in a diesel engine are oiled by your fuel running through them. Driving for any distance on the mix is what can do harm, since petrol dilutes the diesel and takes that protection away.
Where you have already driven the Getz, stop in a safe place and turn off. We can still deal with it, by draining your tank and rinsing the lines and the fuel filter until all of the contaminated fuel is gone. If it's caught soon and cleaned out thoroughly, long-term harm is very rare.
Every version of the Getz is the same in this, the Getz 1.5 CRDi among them.
The fuel tank capacity of the Hyundai Getz
The capacity of the tank matters as the risk hinges on what proportion of your fuel in there is petrol, so the same few litres are more of a worry if your tank was almost empty when you fuelled up.
In our figures, all of the diesel variants of the Hyundai Getz share one tank of 45 litres, so the sum works out the same for each.
| Version | Fuel tank |
|---|---|
| Hyundai Getz 1.5 CRDi | 45 litres |
| Hyundai Getz 1.5 CRDi VGT | 45 litres |
What diesel version of the Getz do you drive?
It is useful for us to have the version when you ring, and it's generally on a badge at the back of the vehicle.
On a diesel Getz you can find CRDi on the badging.
There is a single motor size across our list, 1.5 litres.
Got AdBlue in a diesel Hyundai Getz?
Some diesel cars carry a mix of water and urea, known as AdBlue, in a tank of its own with a dedicated filler, and rely on it to treat their exhaust. If you've got AdBlue in a diesel Hyundai Getz since it went in the incorrect filler, don't touch your key, even to move your car.
As it's largely water, AdBlue does not ignite and gives the fuel pump no lubrication whatsoever. It does not blend with diesel either, so it sinks to the base of your tank where the pump draws its fuel, and a tank of up to 45 litres won't dilute it as it would dilute petrol.
A small amount is still drawn into your fuel system. Once the water has dried off, what is left is urea, which crystallises inside the fuel system, filter and injectors included, and attacks any metalwork it sits against.
Look under your fuel flap if the Getz has an AdBlue filler, since on a lot of vehicles it is right alongside the diesel filler. You can usually spot the AdBlue lid by its blue shade and the much slimmer nozzle it fits.
What we do in a fuel drain on your Hyundai Getz
We do a fuel drain on your Hyundai Getz where the car stands, and it never has to be taken to a garage. On the Getz the tank holds up to 45 litres, and we drain all of that after we have found out what went in and whether your engine has been run. Your fuel lines and the filter are flushed next, then we refill with fresh diesel and prime the system before firing up the motor.
By the time we leave, your Getz is running on fresh diesel once more and ready for you to drive away.
Handling AdBlue removal from a diesel Hyundai Getz
The steps are the same as draining petrol in AdBlue removal from a diesel Hyundai Getz. When the Getz has been run, AdBlue can form deposits inside the lines, because it settles under the diesel rather than mixing in. We flush those through as well, and change the filter where needed.
AdBlue removal, as we use it on this page, covers AdBlue that was put in the wrong filler and has to come out of your diesel tank. It does not cover taking out or disabling the AdBlue system on your vehicle.
What does a fuel drain on the Hyundai Getz cost?
A set quote is not something we publish, since no two jobs involve the same work. It largely comes down to the following:
- whether the Getz has been started or driven, which makes the biggest difference
- how much went in relative to the capacity of your tank
- which of the two it was, petrol or AdBlue
- whether our van can easily and safely reach the Getz where it is
With those details on the phone, we can tell you what the work is going to involve.
Your queries on petrol in a diesel Hyundai Getz
How many litres is the Hyundai Getz fuel tank capacity?
It takes 45 litres, and our data show the same tank on every version.
I only put a little petrol in my Getz. Should I top up with diesel?
Filling up only cuts the proportion of petrol. None of that is removed, so it's all still there when you drive, which is why we wouldn't recommend it. With just a little petrol, a fuel drain to take all of it out is normally all the Getz needs.
Must my Getz go to the Hyundai dealer?
There is no reason to take it anywhere. We drain and clean your Getz where it is, and we are independent, with no connection to Hyundai or any of its dealers.
Which Getz I have: does it make a difference?
We hold figures for 2 diesel variants of the Getz, and knowing which one you have helps us when you phone.
Does my insurance policy cover wrong fuel in my Hyundai Getz?
It is worth checking your policy, as misfuelling cover is part of some but not all. Whatever it says, we come out and drain your car.
What if I put diesel in the AdBlue tank of my Getz?
In this case, too, the right thing is to leave the ignition alone. The AdBlue system will need emptying, and when the vehicle is driven like that, it will most likely show an alert and drop into limp mode. Let us know which tank the fuel was put in when you phone.
Already driven my Getz: what do I do?
Till we get to you, the engine needs to stay off, so pull over where it is safe then turn it off. Where you have pulled over, the system is emptied and cleaned on the spot, and caught early like this, it very rarely leaves permanent harm.
