Put Petrol in a Diesel Hyundai H-1 by Mistake?
Anyone who has put petrol in a diesel Hyundai H-1 without starting the motor ought to leave it turned off, and not start it even to move it off the pump. With your motor kept off, the petrol stays where it is in the tank, and in the majority of cases a fuel drain is all the H-1 requires.
We come to misfuelled vehicles rather than the other way round, so with Petrol in Diesel the Hyundai H-1 stays on the forecourt or wherever it has stopped. Wait before trying anything yourself until you've called us, and we will tell you what to do.
Got petrol in a diesel H-1? The first steps
- With petrol in your tank, a diesel H-1 will generally still start and run, and seem perfectly normal for some miles. That's why people often drive off without noticing a problem, and the reason your engine should be left off.
- Keep the ignition off too. On a lot of diesels switching it on is enough to set the fuel pump priming, which pulls fuel out of the tank to the injectors.
- Filling up with diesel to dilute it is a mistake, even with super unleaded, which is petrol as well. The tank in your H-1 holds up to 85 litres, and every litre of diesel added is more tainted fuel for us to empty.
- A car in the way of a pump can be popped in neutral and rolled out of the way, and the forecourt attendants are generally glad to help.
- Call 0333 366 0103 with where the H-1 has stopped and which one it is, the approximate volume of petrol that was put in, and whether it has run. If you can see the exact variant on the badging, for instance the H-1 Travel 2.5 CRDi, that is useful as well.
Running on wrong fuel in your Hyundai H-1
The engine isn't affected by wrong fuel in your Hyundai H-1 till it's pulled out of the tank, and starting your engine is what pulls it out. A diesel motor relies on its fuel to oil your high-pressure pump and your injectors while it flows through them. Petrol dilutes your diesel and strips that lubrication away, which is why it's driving any distance on the blend that can do harm.
If you have already been driving your H-1, stop where it is safe and switch off. We can still put it right, by draining your tank and cleaning the pipes and your filter until all of the contaminated fuel is cleared. Very few cars that are caught soon and flushed out properly end up with long-term damage.
The fuel tank capacity of the Hyundai H-1
If you filled up while your tank was nearly empty, the same couple of litres make up more of your fuel in there, and the risk rests on that proportion, which means the capacity of your tank counts.
The version decides your tank size on the Hyundai H-1, which ranges from 65 to 85 litres.
The smallest fuel tank in our figures is on the H-1 Starex TD, and the largest is on the H-1 Travel.
| Version | Fuel tank |
|---|---|
| Hyundai H-1 Starex TD | 65 litres |
| Hyundai H-1 Travel | 85 litres |
| Hyundai H-1 Travel 2.5 CRDi | 75 litres |
Finding your diesel H-1 variant
Check the badging on your boot lid, which generally gives the variant, and let us know what it says when you phone.
On your diesel H-1, the badging used is CRDi and TD.
Each version in our records has an engine of 2.5 litres.
Got AdBlue in a diesel Hyundai H-1?
Some diesel vehicles hold a blend of water and urea, called AdBlue, in a tank of its own with a separate filler, and use it to clean up their exhaust. Even to move the car, do not touch the key when you have AdBlue in a diesel Hyundai H-1 after it went into the incorrect filler.
The fuel pump has no lubrication whatsoever from AdBlue, which is largely water and will not burn. It will not blend with diesel either, and drops to the base of your tank, the very location the pump pulls from, so a tank holding up to 85 litres does nothing to dilute it.
A modest amount is still pulled into the fuel system. Once the water dries out, the urea crystallises inside the fuel system, including your filter and injectors, and it corrodes the metalwork it rests against.
On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler is next to the diesel filler under the same fuel flap, and where your H-1 has one, it might well be there as well. You can typically spot the AdBlue lid by its blue shade and the much narrower nozzle it fits.
The fuel drain on your Hyundai H-1, step by step
We do a fuel drain on your Hyundai H-1 where your car stands, and it never needs to go to a garage. First we check what was put in and whether your engine has been run. Your tank, which takes up to 85 litres on the H-1, is then emptied, the pipes and fuel filter are cleaned, and the vehicle is filled up with fresh diesel and primed before we start the vehicle.
By the time we leave, your H-1 is running on clean diesel once more and all set for you to take away.
AdBlue removal from a diesel Hyundai H-1
AdBlue removal from a diesel Hyundai H-1 uses the same steps as a petrol drain. We clear crystals out of the lines too if the H-1 has been run, and swap your fuel filter where needed, because AdBlue gathers in the base of your tank rather than blending in and may leave them behind.
On this page, AdBlue removal means taking AdBlue back out of a diesel tank it was put into through the incorrect filler. Switching off or taking out the AdBlue system on a car is not what it means.
What sets the price of a fuel drain on the Hyundai H-1
As every task is different, we have no set quote to publish, and these are the chief things that affect it:
- whether anyone has started or driven the H-1, the thing that matters most
- the quantity put in, weighed against the size of the tank
- whether it was petrol or AdBlue
- whether the van can safely reach the H-1 where it stands
If you phone with those answers we can explain what the work is likely to involve.
Questions about petrol in a diesel Hyundai H-1
How many litres is the Hyundai H-1 fuel tank capacity?
The table further up shows each version, with tanks between 65 and 85 litres.
Is it OK to add diesel after just a little petrol in my H-1?
Topping up just lowers the share of petrol. None of that is removed, so it's all still there when you drive off, which is why we wouldn't recommend it. Draining takes all of that out, and with a modest quantity that is generally all the H-1 needs.
Does my H-1 have to go to the Hyundai dealer?
There's no need to move it anywhere. We drain and clean your H-1 where it has stopped, and we are independent, with no tie to Hyundai or its dealers.
Does it matter which H-1 I own?
It is useful for us to know which one you drive when you ring, as we have data for 3 diesel versions of the H-1.
Is wrong fuel in my Hyundai H-1 covered by my insurance?
It is worth looking at your policy, as misfuelling cover is included in some and not others. Whatever it says, we come out to drain your car.
Diesel in the AdBlue tank of my H-1: what happens?
In that case, as well, keep your key out of the ignition. If it's driven like that, a car will generally display a warning and drop into limp mode. The AdBlue system needs draining too. Do say which tank took your diesel when you phone.
I've already driven my H-1. What do I do?
Stop where it's safe and turn the engine off, then leave it off until we arrive. Spotting it this early means long-term damage is very unusual, and we empty and clean the system wherever you are.
