Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Hyundai i30 by Mistake?

When you have got petrol in a diesel Hyundai i30 but the engine has not been turned on, leave it turned off, including to shift it away from the pump. A fuel drain is generally enough to set your i30 right, as long as the petrol stays inside your tank, which it does while your engine is off.

Petrol in Diesel drains misfuelled vehicles where they stand, so your Hyundai i30 can stay on the forecourt or wherever it has stopped. Phone us before anything else and let us walk you through it, instead of attempting anything on your own.

Petrol in a diesel i30: what to do right away

  • Keep your motor off. Any diesel i30 will normally fire up and run with petrol inside the tank, and it can feel normal for a couple of miles, which explains why people commonly drive away without realising anything is amiss.
  • Turning your ignition on is enough, on a lot of diesels, to set the fuel pump priming and pull fuel from your tank towards your injectors, so keep that off too.
  • Do not fill the rest of the tank with diesel to weaken it. Your i30 holds up to 53 litres, and topping it up simply leaves more tainted fuel to empty out. Super unleaded counts as petrol here as well.
  • Forecourt staff will generally help roll the car clear in neutral if it's in the way of a pump.
  • When the badge shows the precise version, for instance the i30 1.6 CRDi, give it when you phone 0333 366 0103. Let us know too which i30 you have and where it is parked, roughly how much petrol was put in and whether your engine has run.

What starting the motor does with wrong fuel in your Hyundai i30

Whilst it remains in your tank, wrong fuel in your Hyundai i30 does not affect the motor. That only starts once it is pulled out, which is what occurs when your engine is started. The high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors in a diesel engine are lubricated by your fuel flowing through them. Driving for any distance on that mix is what can cause damage, since petrol thins your diesel and strips that lubrication away.

Look for a safe place to pull in and turn off, when the i30 has already been on the road. It can still be sorted out, with the tank drained and the pipes and fuel filter rinsed until the last of the tainted fuel has gone. Provided it is flushed out thoroughly after being caught soon, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

That is true of the i30cw 1.6 CRDi as much as every other variant of the i30.

The Hyundai i30 fuel tank capacity, by version

The capacity of your tank matters as the danger rests on how much of your fuel in it is petrol, so the same few litres are more of a worry if the tank was close to empty when you fuelled up.

The tank takes 53 litres on each diesel Hyundai i30 we hold data for, so that sum is the same whichever variant you have.

VersionFuel tank
Hyundai i30 1.4 CRDi53 litres
Hyundai i30 1.6 CRDi53 litres
Hyundai i30 2.0 CRDi53 litres
Hyundai i30cw 1.4 CRDi53 litres
Hyundai i30cw 1.6 CRDi53 litres
Hyundai i30cw 2.0 CRDi53 litres

Which diesel variant of the i30 is yours?

It is useful for us to have the version when you call, and it is normally on a badge at the rear of your vehicle.

On your diesel i30, the badging found is CRDi.

The smallest motor, 1.4 litres, is on the i30 1.4 CRDi, and the biggest, 2.0 litres, is on the i30 2.0 CRDi.

AdBlue in a diesel Hyundai i30 by accident

Some diesel vehicles carry a mixture of water and urea, called AdBlue, in a tank of its own with a separate filler, and use it to clean up their exhaust. If there's AdBlue in a diesel Hyundai i30 because it went in the wrong filler, do not turn your key, even to shift your car.

The fuel pump has no lubrication whatsoever from AdBlue, which is mostly water and won't ignite. It won't blend with diesel either, and settles to the bottom of the tank, the same location your pump draws from, so a tank of up to 53 litres does nothing to dilute it.

However modest the amount, some of it gets sucked into the line. Deposits of urea form in the filter, your injectors and the rest of your fuel system as the water dries off, and they attack the metalwork they sit against.

Check under your fuel flap if your i30 has an AdBlue filler, as on plenty of cars it sits right alongside your diesel filler. The nozzle for AdBlue is much smaller than the diesel one, and the cap is usually blue.

The fuel drain on your Hyundai i30, step by step

Taking the vehicle to a garage is not necessary, as a fuel drain on your Hyundai i30 is carried out right at the vehicle. We begin by checking what was put in and whether your engine has run, then drain the tank, which on the i30 holds up to 53 litres. After that we flush the fuel pipes and your filter and fill up with clean diesel, and the system is primed before we start your engine.

Fresh diesel is what the i30 runs on by the time we have finished, and you are free to drive off in it.

AdBlue removal from a diesel Hyundai i30, explained

We follow the same steps for AdBlue removal from a diesel Hyundai i30 as we do for clearing petrol. We rinse crystals out of the lines as well when the i30 has been run, and change the fuel filter where needed, as AdBlue collects in the bottom of the tank instead of blending in and can leave them there.

AdBlue removal, as we use the term here, covers AdBlue that went in the incorrect filler and has to come out of the diesel tank. It does not cover taking out or disabling the AdBlue system on your vehicle.

A fuel drain on the Hyundai i30: what it costs

A fixed price is not something we publish, since no two jobs need the same work. It mainly comes down to the following:

  • most of all, whether the i30 has been driven or even started
  • a tank's capacity next to the amount that went in
  • whether it was AdBlue instead of petrol
  • where the i30 is parked, and whether we can bring the van to it safely

If you phone with those details we can tell you what the job is likely to involve.

Questions on petrol in a diesel Hyundai i30, with answers

Your Hyundai i30 fuel tank capacity: how many litres?

53 litres. Your tank is the same capacity whichever version you have.

I just put a little petrol in my i30. Should I fill up with diesel?

It is not something we'd advise, since putting in diesel does nothing to take out the petrol. It only lowers its proportion, and the petrol is still in your system after you drive off. All of that comes out with a drain, which for a modest amount is generally everything your i30 requires.

Do I have to take my i30 to the Hyundai dealer?

You do not need to. We have no connection with Hyundai or any of its dealers, being independent, and the i30 is drained and cleaned where you have stopped.

Do you need to know which i30 I have?

We hold data for 6 diesel variants of the i30, and knowing which one you have helps us when you call.

Is wrong fuel in my Hyundai i30 covered by my policy?

It is worth looking at your insurance, as misfuelling cover is part of some but not all. Whatever it says, we come out and empty the car.

Diesel in the AdBlue tank of my i30: what now?

Here, too, the sensible thing is to leave the ignition alone. If it's driven that way, a car will normally give an alert and drop into limp mode. The AdBlue system needs draining too. When you ring, let us know which tank the diesel went into.

What should I do if I've already driven my i30?

Pull over where it's safe and turn the engine off, then leave it off until we arrive. Catching it this soon means lasting damage is very unusual, plus we drain and clean the fuel system wherever you happen to be.
