Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Hyundai Trajet by Mistake?

If you have put petrol in a diesel Hyundai Trajet but your motor has not been started, leave it switched off, even to shift it away from the petrol pump. As long as your engine remains off the petrol remains in the tank, and a drain is generally all that it needs to set your Trajet right.

Your Hyundai Trajet can be left wherever it has stopped, forecourt included, as Petrol in Diesel drains misfuelled cars on the spot. We will go through it with you on the phone, so call us before attempting anything yourself.

What to do first for petrol in a diesel Trajet

  • With petrol inside the tank, a diesel Trajet will generally still start and run, and feel perfectly normal for some miles. That's how motorists often drive off without spotting a problem, and why your motor needs to be left off.
  • Your ignition needs to remain off too, as switching it on starts the fuel pump priming on plenty of diesels, and the pump then draws fuel from your tank.
  • Do not fill the rest of the tank with diesel to thin it. Your Trajet takes up to 65 litres, and filling it up simply leaves more tainted fuel to drain. Super unleaded counts as petrol here as well.
  • When your car is in the way of a pump, put it in neutral and push it clear. Forecourt staff are usually glad to lend a hand.
  • If the badge gives the precise version, for instance the Trajet 2.0 CRDi, mention it once you call 0333 366 0103. Let us know as well which Trajet you drive and where it is parked, about how much petrol was put in and whether the motor has run.

Driven the car with wrong fuel in your Hyundai Trajet?

Wrong fuel in your Hyundai Trajet only starts to affect the engine after it is pulled out of your tank, which is exactly what starting your engine does. As it flows through, diesel fuel leaves your high-pressure pump and the injectors lubricated, and the motor depends on that. That protection is washed away once petrol thins the diesel, so the harm, where there's any, comes from driving on the blend.

Where you have already been driving the Trajet, stop where it is safe and turn off. We drain your tank, then flush the lines and fuel filter through until no contaminated fuel is left, so it can still be put right. Provided it's cleaned out properly after being caught soon, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

The Hyundai Trajet fuel tank capacity, by version

The capacity of your tank matters because the risk rests on what share of the fuel in it is petrol, so the same few litres are a bigger problem if the tank was close to empty when you fuelled up.

Each diesel Hyundai Trajet we have figures for has the same tank, which holds 65 litres, so the variant you have does not change that sum.

Which diesel Trajet do you have?

Check the badging on your boot lid, which generally gives the version, then tell us what it says when you ring.

Look for CRDi on the badge of a diesel Trajet.

All the versions in our records have 2.0-litre engines.

Got AdBlue in a diesel Hyundai Trajet?

To clean up their exhaust, some diesel vehicles rely on AdBlue, a blend of water and urea that goes in its own tank through its own filler. The key needs to remain out of your ignition if you've got AdBlue in a diesel Hyundai Trajet through the incorrect filler, and that includes moving your car.

As it's largely water, AdBlue doesn't burn and gives the fuel pump no lubrication whatsoever. It doesn't mix with diesel either, so it sinks to the base of your tank where your pump takes its fuel, and a tank holding up to 65 litres does nothing to dilute it the way it would dilute petrol.

Even a little of it is enough to end up in your fuel line. Crystals of urea form in the fuel filter, the fuel injectors and the rest of the system as the water evaporates, and they corrode the metal they touch.

On a lot of vehicles the AdBlue filler sits next to your diesel filler under the same flap, and where your Trajet has one, it may well be there as well. The nozzle for AdBlue is much smaller than the diesel one, and the cap is usually blue.

What we do in a fuel drain on your Hyundai Trajet

A fuel drain on your Hyundai Trajet is carried out at the vehicle, and it never needs to go to a garage. We start by confirming what went in and whether your engine has been run, then drain your tank, which on the Trajet holds up to 65 litres. After that we flush your fuel lines and your filter and fill up with clean diesel, and the fuel system is primed before we start the car.

When we've finished, your Trajet runs on fresh diesel and you can carry on.

AdBlue removal from a diesel Hyundai Trajet, step by step

AdBlue removal from a diesel Hyundai Trajet takes the same stages as draining petrol. As AdBlue doesn't mix in but gathers at the base of your tank, running the Trajet on it can leave deposits inside the lines. Those get flushed through as well, and your fuel filter is swapped if it needs it.

AdBlue removal on this page means getting AdBlue out of the diesel tank after it has been put in the wrong filler. It doesn't mean removing or switching off the AdBlue system on the vehicle.

A fuel drain on the Hyundai Trajet: what it costs

We don't publish a fixed quote, since the work changes from one task to the next. These are the biggest things that affect it:

  • starting or driving the Trajet, which makes more difference than anything else
  • a tank's size next to the volume that was put in
  • which of the two it was, petrol or AdBlue
  • whether our van can safely reach the Trajet where it stands

We can tell you what this work will probably involve when you phone with those answers.

Queries on petrol in a diesel Hyundai Trajet, with answers

The Hyundai Trajet fuel tank capacity: how many litres?

It takes 65 litres, and our data show the same tank on every version.

Can I top up with diesel if I just put a little petrol in my Trajet?

Topping up just reduces the share of petrol. None of that is taken out, so it's all still there when you drive, which is why we wouldn't advise it. The Trajet usually needs nothing more than a fuel drain if only a modest amount was put in, and that takes that petrol out completely.

Do I have to take my Trajet to the Hyundai dealer?

No. We're independent and have no tie with Hyundai or its dealers, plus we drain and clean the Trajet wherever it is, so there's no need to move it anywhere.

Am I insured for wrong fuel in my Hyundai Trajet?

It is worth checking your insurance, as misfuelling cover is included in some but not all. Whichever way it reads, we come out to empty the car.

The diesel went into the AdBlue filler on my Trajet. What now?

In that case, too, leave your key out of the ignition. If it's driven that way, a vehicle will generally give a warning and go into limp mode. The AdBlue system needs draining too. Which tank the fuel went into is worth telling us when you phone.

Already driven my Trajet: what do I do?

Pull over where it's safe and turn your motor off, then leave it off until we reach you. We empty and clean your fuel system where you have pulled over, and when it is caught early like this, long-term harm is very uncommon.
