Petrol in Diesel

Have You Put Petrol in a Diesel Infiniti Q50?

If you've got petrol in a diesel Infiniti Q50 and your engine hasn't been run, leave it turned off, including to shift it away from the petrol pump. A fuel drain is normally enough to set the Q50 right, as long as the petrol stays in your tank, which it does whilst the motor is off.

Your Infiniti Q50 can be left wherever it ended up, forecourt or not, because Petrol in Diesel empties misfuelled vehicles on the spot. Phone us before anything else then let us talk you through it, instead of attempting anything on your own.

Petrol in a diesel Q50: what to do first

  • Motorists often drive away without realising anything is amiss, because a diesel Q50 will generally start and run on petrol and may seem fine for the first couple of miles. So leave the engine off.
  • Switching the ignition on is all it takes, on plenty of diesels, to set the fuel pump priming and pull fuel from your tank towards the injectors, so keep that off too.
  • Diluting the petrol by filling up with diesel doesn't help. It only adds to the contaminated fuel to be drained from a tank that holds up to 74 litres in your Q50, and super unleaded counts as petrol here too.
  • If your vehicle is blocking a pump, pop it in neutral and roll it out of the way. Forecourt staff are generally glad to lend a hand.
  • If the badging shows the precise variant, for instance the Q50 2.2D, give it once you phone 0333 366 0103. Let us know too which Q50 you drive and where it is parked, roughly how much petrol was put in and whether the motor has run.

Driving on wrong fuel in your Infiniti Q50

Starting your motor is what draws the wrong fuel in your Infiniti Q50 out of the tank, and only then does it start to affect your engine. In a diesel motor, your fuel oils the fuel injectors and the injection pump on its way through. Petrol dilutes the diesel and washes that protection away, which is why it's driving any distance on the blend that can cause damage.

If you've driven the Q50 on it, the right thing to do is stop somewhere safe then turn the motor off. It can still be put right, with the tank drained and the lines and filter rinsed till the last of the tainted fuel has gone. Long-term harm is very uncommon if it is caught soon and given a proper clean.

Fuel drain on a diesel Infiniti Q50

Your Infiniti Q50 fuel tank capacity, version by version

Since the danger depends on how much of your fuel is petrol, the size of the tank counts, and a few litres in a tank that was close to empty are a bigger problem than the same in a fuller one.

It doesn't matter which variant you have, since every diesel Infiniti Q50 in our figures uses the same tank, holding 74 litres.

Working out which diesel Q50 you have

The version is usually on the badging on your boot lid, and it helps us to know it when you ring.

AdBlue in a diesel Infiniti Q50

To treat their exhaust, some diesel vehicles rely on AdBlue, a blend of water and urea that is put in its own tank through its own filler. Pouring AdBlue in the wrong filler gives you AdBlue in a diesel Infiniti Q50, so do not touch your key, not even to move it.

Since it's mostly water, AdBlue does not ignite and gives the fuel pump no protection at all. It does not mix with diesel either, so it settles to the base of your tank where your pump takes its fuel, and a tank holding up to 74 litres won't dilute it as it would dilute petrol.

A modest amount is still pulled into the fuel system. Once the water has evaporated, what's left is urea, which crystallises inside the system, filter and injectors included, and corrodes any metalwork it rests against.

On many vehicles the AdBlue filler sits next to your diesel filler under the same cover, and where the Q50 has one, it could well be there as well. AdBlue caps are generally blue and fit a much smaller nozzle than diesel.

What we do in a fuel drain on your Infiniti Q50

A fuel drain on your Infiniti Q50 is done at the car, so it never needs to be taken to a garage. On the Q50 the tank holds up to 74 litres, so we empty all of that once we have found out what went in and whether the engine has been run. The fuel lines and your filter are rinsed after that, then we refill with fresh diesel and prime your system before firing up your motor.

You are free to take the Q50 away once the job is done, running on clean diesel.

Handling AdBlue removal from a diesel Infiniti Q50

The stages are the same as draining petrol for AdBlue removal from a diesel Infiniti Q50. We rinse crystals out of the lines too when the Q50 has been run, and swap your fuel filter if needed, since AdBlue gathers in the base of your tank instead of mixing in and may leave them behind.

AdBlue removal, as we use the term here, is about AdBlue that was put in the wrong filler and has to come out of the diesel tank. It does not cover removing or switching off the AdBlue system on your car.

What sets the price of a fuel drain on the Infiniti Q50

We do not publish a fixed quote, since the work changes from one job to the next. These are the main things that change it:

  • most of all, whether the Q50 has been driven or even started
  • the size of your tank, set against how much was put in
  • what went in, petrol or AdBlue
  • whether our van can easily and safely reach the Q50 where it stands

Once you ring with those details we can let you know what the job is likely to involve.

Questions on petrol in a diesel Infiniti Q50, with answers

How many litres is the Infiniti Q50 fuel tank capacity?

74 litres. Your tank is the same capacity whatever variant you have.

Does filling up with diesel help with a little petrol in my Q50?

It isn't something we would advise, because adding diesel does nothing to remove that petrol. It just reduces its share, and the petrol is still in your system once you drive off. All of it comes out with a drain, which for a modest amount is generally everything the Q50 requires.

Does my Q50 have to be taken to the Infiniti dealer?

There is no need to move it anywhere. We empty and clean your Q50 where it is, and we are independent, with no link to Infiniti or its dealers.

Will my insurance pay for wrong fuel in my Infiniti Q50?

Misfuelling cover is part of some policies and not others, so check yours. We'll come out to empty it for you whether it does or not.

What happens if I put diesel in the AdBlue tank of my Q50?

In that case, too, keep the key out of your ignition. The AdBlue system will need emptying, and if your car is driven that way, it will most likely display a warning and enter limp mode. When you ring, tell us which tank your diesel went into.

I have already driven my Q50. What now?

Till we get to you, the engine needs to stay off, so stop where it is safe then turn it off. We drain and clean the fuel system wherever you have stopped, and if it is caught early like this, permanent harm is very rare.
